Thanks, tightened the two loose screws, and it works perfect. You saved me from a trip to the shop, and most importantly, some hard earned cash. Thank you.

I have a 98 Marquis and sometimes it won't start unless I jiggle the lever in park sometimes. It was impossible to really diagnose, I didn't test the gearshift at first.. The detents work fine though. I replaced the starter with a Motorcraft reman but the problem happens once or twice a year, I just touch the shifter. I'm thinking either ignition switch or the shift tube is loose.
@flower22892 жыл бұрын
I'm sure this problem is long gone but you need to adjust or replace the neutral safety switch on your transmission.

My '98 Explorer got gradually sloppier until I could not shift it into low gear anymore. Not a situation you want to have when you don't trust your brake lines!

I had the sloppy gear shifter on my 2001 ford ranger so I bought a new shift tube and installed it because the old shift tube was broken, but now the truck will not do anything when I turn the key. I have accessory so the radio and dash lights come on but it acts dead when I try to start the engine. Could this be something to do with the anti theft mode? Thanks and I enjoy watching your videos.

Its very possible. I'm not familiar with that vehicle so I can't answer for sure.

mine did this an now it won't go out of park how can I fix it
@MacGyversWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
You will have to either climb under the dash and try to reinstall the bolts, or pull the steering column and do it on the bench.
@Bloodyshinta14 жыл бұрын
mine just started doing this today then a few hours later broke completely and I can't drive the car now.
@___underdogtrucking93773 жыл бұрын
What did you do? I have that problem now
@Bloodyshinta13 жыл бұрын
@@___underdogtrucking9377 for me it ended up being the transmission linkage cable end that broke, bought a new one for a few bucks then paid someone a few hundred dollars to install it.

where can I find the t 30 bolts
@MacGyversWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
I don't remember what size they are, but you can either order them from the dealer if they are available or go to a "U-Pull-It" type of junkyard and find them on another car. Any Ford that has a column shift will do as they are all the same bolts.

I have a 95 only drives in reverse ..put it in drive you can step on gas & go no where help please I miss driving this car
@MacGyversWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of things that could cause that problem. Unfortunately most are inside the transmission requiring some disassembly of the valvebody, or worse, removal of the transmission. If you are lucky, it could be a linkage problem, but more than likely it's internal.

Ooow what a pain to get to, even when fixed it still looks a bit sloppy :-( Its a dam shame the cast tube broke on the truck, is it a complex part, you cant make one from a steel tube? Im just thinking that you may be able to make a better one to last longer, i mean you have "mac gyvers workshop where anything is possible, if im lucky i might learn something" ha ha Just being daft, as normal lol.
@MacGyversWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
zx8401ztv LOL! I thought about it! but it's much quicker to just scrounge one at the boneyard. I was supposed to be working on the house this weekend. The Mercury shifter is just like new now. They all have a little slop in them, but the "clicks" are supposed to be in the right places which they are now so we are all good on that car. I just have to get the truck fixed now :)

MY QUESTION IS WHY DO THEY MAKE THE PARTS OUT OF SUCH SHIT METAL?
@MacGyversWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
obieezx11 I have no idea, but I figure mine has something to do with the fact that the truck has 395,000 miles on it so I can't complain too loudly. The Mercury is pushing 200,000 miles.

@MacGyversWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
DaddytechEnt I use that Orange string that comes in the long tube. It has worked well for me, but any of that string you have to keep moist. It has a little sponge in it that your supposed to keep wet. If it dries up, it igets brittle and breaks real quick. The cheap string isn't worth wasting money on. But string mowers still eat a lot of string even using the best stuff. And if you have a lot of thick grass and weeds to go through, it's worse, but still that string mower is well worth the money. If you recall we bought one as well.
