Fixing Big Gaps in my BillyOH Winchester (or Dunster) Log Cabin 5x3m

Hi jonas we have a Dunster house 3x4 meter Avon log cabin which I have put storm braces on inside on all 4 corners they are bolted tight at the top but the bottom of the brace has a 80mm slot the bolt is set in the middle of the slot and hand tightened only this allows for movement.Also in the instructions it does say if you are hanging shelf’s you can only screw into one board only to allow movement.If you screw in brackets and are securing them to more than one board it’s a no no they can not expand and contract which you probably already no.The logs are 44mm logs even though all the boards were dry and we built in dry weather since this heatwave we are having they are moving not to the extent you have had but as you pointed out wood will do what it wants to do lol great videos by the way cheers paul

Yes I’ve seen that adjustable design, much better! And yes I have some shelf brackets that don’t have the bottom screw, so the bracket can slide 👍🏻 the rest are in a single set of boards so they can move a bit

Hi Jonas, I have a 4x4 Tuin cabin with 34 mm thick planking and I was shocked to see my cabin rise and fall by a good 25 mm over the seasons, this doesn’t cause any problems though , Tuin cabins are in my opinion a very good product.

It does tell you in the instructions about shrinkage to the walls. I cut the corner supports to size and a few weeks later they were 6cm too long. My roof and floor shrunk too so now the boards aren’t tight together. Best thing is to not fit the corner supports at all until it’s dried out.

It does say cut to size, it should say allow for shrinkage and leave some more off. it’s timber so it’ll carry on moving, I am fairly happy with the fix but I would have left a gap at the bottom if I could go back 👍🏻

We've had one of these for about 8 years now. Every year it's a battle between winter and summer dealing with expansion and shrinkage, it's a good few inches. Over the years iv'e replaced the doors and windows for UPVC units which improves the heat retention in winter but i do notice gaps popping up each year between the boards. My wife uses it now for a beauty salon so we are planning to replace it for something more suitable next year.

This is a great video, I have a BillyOh Freya 5mx3m which I was insulating and have been following along. Would love to see a proper Facebook Group set up for BillyOh customers. I’ve had a few troubles but found BillyOh to be really helpful.

I did exactly that and cut a good chunk off the corners and only attached at the top board but still have an issue in the back corner where the boards just wont move down even though theres nothing obvious stopping them. Its quite a frustrating design in practice.

Mmm have you checked inside and out? Mine needed a tap outside to get it to drop back down?

@BigRedJphoto it's the board below the roof I've tried pulling it and hitting it gently but worried about splitting a roof board if I hit the roof down

I doubt you’d split anything as long as you hit the top over the wall, not just the roof board because yes you are right, they are a bit flimsy

@BigRedJphoto I found it 🙈 the bottom of that corner is hidden on inside it appears it had sunk all the way down to the chunk I had cut off the inner support and was being held up so I've taken another big chunk off and it's starting to close now. Has moved down about an inch in total in 3 months 😅

Good point, no I went for the plain wood and painted it, pressure treated was a big jump in cost that my budget wouldn’t stretch too, it’s not a huge problem, I just with I’d known and cut those strips beforehand 👍🏻

@@BigRedJphoto I will get my Winchester cabin delivered next week. I am afraid that it will shrink even more because it will be freshly treated. Any suggestions you can offer?

Also did you have to apply for planning permissions? My base is about 20cm above ground, and i think height of the cabin from ground will exceed 2.5m

All I’d say if the inside strips, leave them hanging above the floor level so it can drop, atleast it’s summer now so it should be pretty dry. As for planning no, I’m just under, plus I’m one of the lowest garden buildings in the area so I can’t see any complaints incoming

@@maziz80you should be fine just try to keep all the wood dry while building get yourself a tarpaulin just in case of rain get it coated as soon as you can.Our dunsterhouse cabin wood was dry.But we have still had shrinkage because of the heatwave we are having but they are designed to move.Everyday we go to the cabin we can see fresh wood peaking through so we just touch it in with our stain.Once we get wetter weather again it will start expanding and closing up the joints again good luck.
