Brilliant. I used your video to build my own. I'm a female and managed the build with a little help from my neighbour lifting the window and door frames. Girls? You can do it. The logs are not too heavy to lift.

Them doors are seriously heavy. So two people is best. Also one of our doors was very nearly touching the bottom frame, so top tip is to place some washers in the hinges to raise it up a tad, plus don't forget to grease the hinges for a smooth action.

Very helpful video I will offer a tip if I may. When you have a normal summer house the walls are only thin so it’s not a problem when you need to repaint it as you can access almost every board at the top, sides and bottom. Log cabins are a different kettle of fish. The logs are thick and once it’s assembled you will never see the vast majority of the tongue and groove on your logs again. So, if you DIDN’T purchase protected timber, do yourself a favour and paint the top and bottom of each board along with the log joints before you assemble the cabin. Timber will expand and contract with the weather and if water gets between the boards and they are unprotected, you may not know until it’s too late.

I have been building mine over the last week, but had to stop due to a badly bent timber and the fench doors being damages, also window shims missing. Dunster are being good but now have a 2 week wait for replacements which is bad as cannot continue. These are very time consuming too if you dont have the tools like a nail gun, etc. Ours is a 4m x 3m and would say 2 to 3 people and tools to enjoy the build as time can run away from you.

Haha oh the dreaded storm braces. @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I just hammered them in and can't remember having any problems at all. There is that trick where you blunt the end of the nail a little, that stops splitting. As long as you don't nail too close to the sides it should be fine. The ones at the very end would have more chance of splitting so you could pilot them or try the blunt nail trick

About to order a 4x3m corner cabin from Dunster House. This is probably a dumb question from a total noob to building cabins, but it appears the cabin isn't secured to the base in any way? Is it literally the weight of the cabin that keeps it in place? You don't have to anchor it down in any way? Just wondering what happens in high winds that's all.
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I didn't fix this one down as it was in a really sheltered area. I can't see us getting any hurricanes in London any time soon. You would have to make a judgement call on the basis of how exposed your cabin will be. I fixed my borehole shed to the base with framing screws but that's because there's open fields on 3 sides. You could easily secure one of these cabins with some L brackets bolted to the concrete (concrete screws would be easier) and screwed to either the bearers or the bottom of the outside wall 👍
@greyknightsrealm8251
@greyknightsrealm8251 2 жыл бұрын
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Thanks. The thing is I'll be using the RapidGrid plastic grid foundation that you fill with pea shingle, rather than a concrete base as the cost difference is huge. I guess I can't fix the structure down on that anyway.

Tut tut Lisa, you didn't watch all of the video otherwise you would know the cabin isn't mine 😜 this one was 2.4m x 3m. I've never had my nails done before but I would say it's certainly possible to get everything you need in there. I would be tempted to go abit bigger if you can, say 3m x 4m. You've got to think how your clients will feel. Maybe put some tape on the floor of the kind of size you was thinking and also mark out where your desk would go etc. There are always garden centres that have sheds and summer houses, so you could pop there and go inside different sized ones to get a feel for the space maybe? Good luck with your new venture, I hope it goes well for you 🍀😊

Just what I need. I'm building a log cabin this size; I'm guessing 4x3 metres and I want a rubber roof. Where did you order it from, how much did you need to cover the area properly and how much did it cost??
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT

Cool, are you looking at getting a Dunster House one? The cabin was 2.5m x 3.5m meaning the roof would be slightly bigger with the overhang, so I got a 3m x 4m epdm shed kit. When you get a shed kit the rubber is one big piece, plus you get the glue which is like pva and a roller. There's quite a few companies out there that do shed kits. I paid about £150. Here's a link to a company that does it amzn.to/38qTrko

Great video, thanks for taking the time to share. I’ve got one of these in 4 x 3 on order and am getting a concrete base down as we speak but I wanted to ask you if you had any experience in using Eco bearers? I saw some of the other comments about how weedy the wood bearers are and wondered if it was worth investing in them to prolong their life for what will be a garden office

Thanks 👍 I've never used them myself as I've never invested that much into a new garden cabin. I've just literally spent all day taking apart a summer house that I bought second hand for £250 😂 with another couple of hundred I'll make it all nice and I would have saved myself at least a couple of k 😁 , it's sitting on my trailer now and I've just got back 😅 very long day! For the amount of money you are investing I would definitely use the eco bearers, for the sake of a couple of hundred you will extend the life of the floor another few years at least

Yeah this is solid. Time wise this is quicker. Only took me 3 days to get the cabin done. The cabin cost £3k though! As a comparison, my borehole shed came in around half that price but its twice the size. Mine is also insulated, although the cabin has 44mm thick walls and double glazed window and doors. I suppose its always cheaper to build your own solid shed but will take time. It's either one or the other hey, time or money! I'd definitely go for the epdm roof covering though 🤘

hi - great video. Like so many others i am deciding if i should buy one of these to use as a small workshop. In your opinion (and obviously not holding you to it) do you feel the floor is strong enough for things like a table saw, band saw etc. All the machinery on it. Would think i might want to add more pieces on top of the concrete to stop future sagging. Any thoughts on the walls. How much weight would you trust on them if you were installing shelves or a tool wall etc? thanks in advance.
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks 👍 you might get away with it but personally I would put down 18 or 22mm p5 t+g chipboard. You need to be careful with the walls as they're designed to expand and move so if you fix something to them and effectively strap a few planks together you might have issues. I suppose you could bolt some ply on to one plank near the top and hang shelving off the ply maybe? With enough fixings you'd be alright
@casimircreer2295
@casimircreer2295 3 жыл бұрын
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT yeah, I think a ply facing would work maybe. Also thinking of long word storage hanging from the ceiling joists. Much to ponder. As it's such a tight space, enclosed on three sides this is a good method as I can pre seal it as pieces and effectively build all from inside. If I built myself I would need more access from the sides and it would be too small.

If you end up with a gap like in 9:30 it is likely that your foundation is not level or the logs have not been seated and some tapping of them might help. In this vid the apex end is too high. If you look at the diagonally opposite corner it's gap should be too low if the foundation was a bit out. You can plane off the apex side to be flush and check the diagonally opposite wall and if need be, cut a custom packing for it to bring it up flush.

Hi, great video. I have the exact same issue you had at 10:30 with the side wall being slightly higher (10mm) than the back wall. Did you just have to hit the logs with s rubber mallet and piece of wood a few times, or was there something else? It is a little frustrating! 😁
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes I literally hit the top of the side wall a few times and it all evened itself out. I just used the rubber mallet and didn't even use another piece of wood. I think it's almost like an accumalative error from either the ground being slightly off level or one of the wall planks being slightly warped. If you haven't put the roof on yet then give it a smash! Just to mention I think the reason why I had that little gap when putting the roof planks on was because the middle purlin had lifted ever so slightly when I screwed it in diagonally. Hope that helps 👍

I didn't on this one no, it was very sheltered so it didn't need it and I can't recall it said to bolt it down in the instructions. I built my own shed at home, which was a similar size to this, but as it's on the edge of a field that is quite exposed, I did use some framing screws I had knocking around. I suppose you can make a judgement call based on how exposed the area is and how often you get storms. I suppose there's no harm in putting some concrete screws through the bearers or getting some strong L brackets and using concrete screws into the base and wood screws into bottom wall planks.
