Excellent video. Just did this a month ago on a Seastar system. A quick note you might want to add, if your only changing the end caps, only take one of the support brackets off and carefully slide the ram out (not past the threads) to access the other side of the cap. Like you said the support brackets are the hardest part of this repair. Thanks for sharing. #seastar

I just replaced my steering lines on Sunday. Instead of using 1 line and switching bleeding ports, we used 2 lines to a tee and opened both ports and turned the wheel back and forth until there was no fluid left, or in your case until there was no air left

#seastar. This was as easy as you have shown. I have a 135 verado that had power assist steering, the oil was so thick it was all jelly inside that it burned the pump out. So after talking to you a couple of times I decided to go with a new sea star without the assist. Being 135 the power assist was not necessary for this size motor. Ordered the parts and had it installed and purged in a few hours. Thanks so much for your input and help. Two thumbs up Aaron.

I did my end caps a few years ago and used a puller to get the arms off. It was a pain, I was afraid I was going to break something. Then, more recently, I had to change the big swivel piece that tilts and turns the motor which meant taking those things off again. I used the air hammer the second time because I saw you do it in a video. There is no comparison! #seastar

Hello Aaron, I love your videos, never miss one. Have a question for you, I have a 200HP Yamaha that is moving back and forth while idling on the hydraulic cylinder. I can basically move the motor from side to side without moving the wheel. The end caps of he cylinder are not leaking, the piston looks great, no nicks. Can this be the center/internal seal? I know there is now air in the system because I just bleed all the air out. any help is appreciated.

I've never had an issue with m baystar system, but on my fortier, i break the teleflex steering cable probably every 5 or 6 years. Last summer it broke 12 miles out with 20mph winds i had to drive home from the tiller (fortiers have a normal helm and then a tiller in the back) Needless to say i got wet even in my foul weather gear.

I have a question for you. Is it normal to have just a tiny bit of play. You mentioned quarter turn. I don't even think it's that much, but offshore I notice that in rough waters the motors will move slightly back and forth on their own. Is any amount of that normal? If not I'll re-bleed and check everything out again.

I have always bled these systems with the bottle on the helm normally never takes me more than 10 minutes to get it perfect however I always bleed both sides of the cylinder with the outboard in at full lock both ways otherwise there will always be air left in the system. Very easy to get confused - to bleed stbd side of the cylinder at full lock right hand down you have to turn the wheel left hand down. Have yet to use a power purge but I rekon I could bleed them quicker without one 🤙🏻

Now here's my issue....lol....... After bleeding the system (under pressure) helm won't move left or right..... So first thing I did was disconnect the hoses from ram.....and put into a small bucket....and I turned the wheel left and right and I'm getting fluid....with ram disconnected the motors move freely...........re installed hoses....bled system again.....close off bleeders and boom.....harder than concrete........do I have a bad helm? Or did my ram come defective?........ Please help doctor...lol

Replaced my two 3 foot lines from transom to cylinder and a cylinder seal kit last year. Not too bad of a job. The marine tech tools puller is a lifesaver! Those brackets get welded on with corrosion. You can slip a piece of hose or PEX split longways over the ram to prevent dents and scrapes while you work. The one thing that most people ask is about the seal in the center of the ram once you pull it out. It’s not field replaceable and seastar claims you have to send it to them to have it replaced. I say go to a hydraulic shop. They can replace that seal, give you new gland end seals and even make you new hoses in any length. If you want cheaper fluid, go to any general aviation airport mechanic shop and ask to purchase a quantity of MIL 5606 aircraft hydraulic fluid. It is approved for use by seastar, and costs way less then the 25.00 a quart they charge!

Once again great content. I went out last week on my friends boat and while I was driving I noticed that it took a lot of effort to keep the boat going straight. When I let go of the wheel it took a rapid turn to the right and later in the day it wanted to go left. Why is that?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Could be a number of things, if it's mechanical steering and it isn't a no feedback helm then that will let the torque of the engine turn the wheel, and the trim fin anode on the engine will also make the engine want to turn in one direction or the other.

I have a 2006 21ft center consul boat with original engine and #seastar system. I am trying to figure out what I need to do to improve it. If I steer the wheel slowly nothing happens. If I speed up the spin, it will catch and turn. I checked the ram and didn't find any nicks. Also no leaks, and the fluid level at the wheel is above the gears. My neighbor has a one year old boat and had a similar problem and the dealer took the boat back and rebleed everything. Any ideas?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
You can try and rebleed it, but if it's older a lot of times it's in the helm and the check valves aren't closing the way they should. There are places that can rebuild them though if you wanted to go that route

Can you connect both valves together and bleed the air form both sides at the same time?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 6 ай бұрын
I think so, I honestly use a power purge pretty much every time I ever bleed a steering system now though. I'm not a 100% on that though, because when you steer one way it pulls from the other way, so depending on how you have it hooked up, you might end up just pulling air in the other side and it not really working the way you think it would :/ Power Purges hook the two together and then run them to the tank, but it's constantly putting fluid into the system at the same time so you don't have to worry about it sucking air from the other side. If you had both sides in fluid though, where when it tried to suck from the other side when you switches directions, it would pull fluid up, that should work because it would push air out, but idk, I might have just confused myself thinking about it lol :/

I cannot turn the steering wheel on my twin I/O sterndrive. I even removed the alpha Sterndrive on the port side. I lubricated the power steering unit where the Mercruiser manual says to do it. Unfortunately, I cannot test the power steering pumps. I take it that this is a common issue with exposure to saltwater? Should I remove the steering cables and dip them in a lubricant to see if it is the cables? Also, do the power steering pumps have to be on, to even move the sterndrives? Appreciate the help! #seastar
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of variables in that question! I don't have an extensive experience with I/O's, but you should be able to disconnect the cables and turn the wheel with it disconnected from the engine. If it turns freely and without issues, then start checking the stuff on the engines. But if they are still stiff, the cables are your issue

So as an auto tec who occasionally drops a wrench or socket into an engine bay then patiently waits for it to hit the ground in relief. I was wondering how often you loose those nice snap on or specialty tools in the drink? If so do you have a super magnet to retrieve it?

That’s actually not as bad as one would assume. I was always talented with mechanics but have a passion for the outdoors. I’m sure you help keep people on the water and off the trailer.

dewey66904 I have the same setup. Just two hex head bolts. Whatever way you turn the wheel open up the same bleed fitting. Ex: steer all the way left, hold the wheel (with helper) open left fitting.And remove the bolt completely. You’ll be amazed how much air blows out! Put the bolt back and work in the other direction. Make sure you don’t run out of fluid at the helm. You’ll start to see that a small movement of the wheel will make the motor move. And you shouldn’t have any “rubbery” feeling when you turn the wheel from lock to lock. And the motor should smoothly move from lock to lock and hit its limit on both sides. Also Aaron and anyone else, Ive heard I can use Automatic Transmission fluid in it. With Quicksilver at $25 a quart I have about 2 gallons of Synthetic trans fluid left over from where I did a flush on my truck. Im trying to use it up. This should work right....Or no????

I bled my seastar. Removed alot of air. The steering goes full lock to one side. The other direction is slow to responsed. It will go almost to full lock and then the wheel will continue to turn endlessly. I noticed a very tiny leak on the end cap. Its the oring just before the threads on the cap. Would this keep me from fully attaining full lock or is there an issue at the helm?

Well a leak will introduce air to the system, and any air depending on where it is, will prevent you from going lock to lock. Sounds like you still have air in the system

Usually it's the quad ring that leaks on the helms, right under the steering wheel, just pop that off and take out the three screws and change out the o-ring/quad-ring and you're good! Here's the steering wheel video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3W6daNma8ajb80&t

My outboard instructor told us a story about the nuts coming loose on his cable steering system. Moral of the story is: Maintenance matters. The loose nut worked off letting the outboard steer free. The 2nd man aboard was thrown overboard. Instinct took over, allowing the captain to throttle back and recover man overboard. In the moments between failure and recovery my instructor could only imagine how he would tell his friends wife what could have been terrible news. Thankfully no one was hurt. To this day he has only used hydraulic steering #Seastar

I swear to God after seeing your last videos Suddenly I have trim motor problems, electric problems and today I saw hydraulic fluid in the transom 😓. My steering system is different is a Whaler Dauntless 200 with a 4 cylinder Verado 200HP. Hydraulic fluid is leaking between a union.

Not sure what you have going on, could be in the pivot tube on the engine that is stopping it. There are a lot of variable here, I'd say to disconnect the engine from the steering bracket and see if the steering works properly that way and if you can move the engine

Well my story...On my 2011 SeaHunt i kept noticing an odd smell in the center console are and I found an oil stain on the canvas covering all the electrical and steering hoses from the helm but I never saw and drips our oil flowing. Upon further inspection I found a leak/misting squirt when the helm was turned. We found the 90* fitting on the helm loose. Pulled the hose off put the correct sealant on the threads and tighten it all up and flushed the system with about 3 quarts and now no leaks and great steering! #SeaStar
