for non mesh machine users select the vertices set your 3d cursor to the intersection of the edges and set your transform pivot to 3d cursor and scale or select the vertices s+-1 then snap
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 9 ай бұрын
You're the first person to mention using scaling in a way that's actually usable. Thanks so much! An interesting solution for sure. It will take a little longer but not vastly more. With something like Machin3 Tools align to move a vert to that intersection and then move the cursor it would actually be pretty fast (maybe faster than the snapping but that's just because I have the muscle memory of the shortcut). Oh I wish blender did face insets keeping those edges parallel by default.. Or better gave you an option
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 10 ай бұрын
I mean it does keep them parallel until you do things like merge by distance, the only issue is when that combines with the overlapping vertices you have to make a choice (unless you use mesh machine). Alternatively you can inset a small amount and then scale the created geometry down, that can work too.
@lukevanlukevan
@lukevanlukevan 9 ай бұрын
It’s not really an inset if it keeps them parallel. That’s would just be scaling the new face down. Nested corner radius is a key feature for insetting that you will see on a lot of good design (from your cellphone to a curb stone)
@neilcollins7371
@neilcollins7371 9 ай бұрын
@lukevanlukevan if you notice when it's happening you can control the corner radius to make it the same as the original corner if you want. That's one of the great things, mesh machine gives you that control/choice.

With the merge option: You can also first select the vertices coming from the bevel and then select the vertex going to the extruded square in the middle, press M for merge and select "At Last".
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 9 ай бұрын
While this partially works you won't always have a vertex perfectly in the middle (if the bevel is an even value for example). At that point the edges coming from the merged point still won't be parallel to the original edge of the object face.

I would simply merge the verts, activate snapping to vertex, then do an alignment on Z to the right vertex, then an alignment on X to the lower vertex and everything's perfect. I try staying with Vanilla Blender, because it annoys me, how Addons can randomly malfunction or simply not being supported by a future version with no free possibility to migrate your licence to the newer version. Other addons might do it better, but why to risk it when Blender can already do it all, just a little less comfortable)
@ArtisansofVaul

Totally your choice to not use add ons and that definetly works. To be fair I very rarely find add ons causing issues with Blender and I have been using Blender for years and have never had an add on that the creator hasn't updated to the new versions (though I guess it could happen). 🤷 Neither has great topology and I think people get far to hung up on topology, it very rarely matters as long as the object looks right and (importantly) you can just make the object you want in the most efficient way and use a remesher to turn it to quads.... if you do want something more quad based try this (and it's native to Blender): kzbin.infoJET2d-VfkGo

Or a very simple way to fix it I've learnt, is to slightly inset it, and then to scale it whatever you want!!
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 8 ай бұрын
Very true. But as has been said that doesn't allow you to control the size of the rounded section, for example you might want it the same size as the original edge, and this also works to correct overshot bevels where the scaling trick doesn't create rounded results.

That's a good plan. It just doesn't allow the control on the size of the bevel as easily/quickly. Though doesn't that make the edges coming off the bevel not always parallel to the object edges?

That will often cause overlapping edges and the inset won't be parallel to the edges of the outer edges so I wouldn't recommend that.
