Main bearings are worn. Do the work your self. You can then also change timing belt from and rear and it will last another 150k miles

I agree it would make great content. You got it dirt cheap so if you go DIY you’re not going to be in it for too much. But have a good look at the wiring to try and ensure it doesn’t catch fire again. I definitely wouldn’t pay someone £7k to do it for you.

possibly look at an engine swap. Personally think a rebuild would be a massive job with no guarantee of success. If you send to a mechanic - expect the price to be higher than quoted. Great effort though.

Tough one as a engine rebuild will not be easy but before you decide check out the different reasons for certain coloured smoke, all you can do is try eliminating problems before splashing out for a new engine/ rebuild , do your research

Hi, Welcome back :) Before you get to much in too it, I i would be looking to see which circuit started it. From that disruption box there is some BIG fuse's at 100 Amp, To cause that amount of damage there has been some high amp's draw. why? My next move would be cylinder compression test, just from the smoke out the exhaust. Merry Xmas my man

Great video, I was in the same situation as you were 2 years ago, I it was a Discovery 4 and I had a seized engine, i replaced it with a Jaguar XJ engine with 50,000 miles, I don't know why salvage yards were charging Double for a landrover engine with 90,000 miles when in reality it's the same engine as a Jaguar, but now my Disco is running like new, took a lot of work but it was worth it in the end

Look at LRtime rebuilding their engine. It’s a very difficult task if you do all the steps yourself. If you just buy a rebuilt engine and just move accessories, then it’s easier, but still requires some cover. If you had your garage clean, maybe it would make sense for content. But in these conditions, I guess it would be better to find another.

You have a 3L right? It’s the same engine. The only difference is that you can to take the body off on the Discovery, but you can pull it out as well there just like on the L405. But I was not referring to that, rather to the actual work on the engine.

Anyway, I just had my 3L L320 rebuilt, at a garage in RO and it was around €7k without discounts. I can help with a reference for a good rebuilt block and heads, timing done and forged steel crank. They ship all over the place and it’s €4k for the actual part. You should get a new oil cooler and you’re off to the races. But as I said, even swapping the accessories on the engine is a bit of a task.

Smoke is normal for a diesel engine that has been sitting for a while! Would give it an oil change and go from there!! 😊

Yes, multiple people have suggested that, actually! I'm going to have to look into it to see which route will be cheaper and easier based on my research and skillset. Thank you very much for suggesting that because previously I hadn't looked into it this way, I thought my only option was to repair the current engine. 👍🏻😊

Guess is that its had long service intervals. Oil is like mud. A a bear journal has dried up as a result, spun out and fallen to bits. Then it's partially siezed, someone before you tried to start and things have melted at the current draw, fuse should have gone, but may not have. Engine out, on slope, that space, open elements, tough. Unless you can get that in the garage to do, it's gonna be open to the elements for a while. Likely the crank has gone, bearing shells, conrod hitting things it shouldn't. Maybe the piston has hit valves. Get compression test on it. Get a camera in each chamber, look for damage. At best, bottom end rebuild, probable full. Hello of a task for you. Call MDRS in Consett, see what they say, even get some collab with them on the rebuild.

Fantastic content in the making for DIY. But if a burnt out board stresses you then a rebuild is out of the question. Lots of tools required and is probably really a body off job. I'd love to see you do it but it will age you. Sell it and maybe get something mechanically good but a thrashed interior that's easier to faf around with. Beautiful car though.

Buy a Jaguar as a cat S and use that engine in this car , the crank has gone , the fire was caused when the engine seized , the driver tries to restart it should bluwbthe fuse 110 amp if that fails it eill catch fire

Working on a car outside, this time of the year is not ideal. The engine is obviously seriously damaged but I would be also worried about the melted area and why that happened, possibly with more wires shorted together somewhere in the wiring loom. It would make good KZbin content but personally if you didn't pay a great deal for it, I would move it on and look for another vehicle with less issues. Getting the engine replaced by a garage could be very expensive if other problems that caused the fried areas suddenly impact on the basic engine change.

There are some interesting comments on here, and a diy fix would provide you with lot's of content....BUT....you have no guarantee's of a total fix, so my advice is to sell it....which i think you'll ignore...so good luck with the rebuild 😟😟😟

If you were 100% sure that it only needed an engine job, then it might have been worth fixing. But you don't know that. It had a freaking engine fire! It could have or develop electrical gremlins at any time. This project could be a bottomless money pit very quickly.
