Another great vid! If I'm moving super quick I'll select the eye dropper, pick the wall color in close proximity and then paint brush in a few clicks to get rid of that orange luminosity mode cast from a duplicate normal mode layer.

I wouldn't recommend brushing in color since you can paint over other items (like fan blades), and also lose texture. Color matching (second example) is a much safer alternative.

I have reasonable success using a soft clone brush in color mode. I do it on the base layer, it's pretty quick but you do have to be careful where you paint

Hi Nathan. I’m also having the same issue as Chad in your comments from a few years ago… The selected layer is the repair layer, but you choose as your source layer 7217, which is the window pull layer. In my practice case, I don’t have a window pull layer, just the ambient and flash. So, when i click source, it’s only showing me “None”, or the flash layer. Not the selected layer I’m working on.

Hi Nathan. Your videos are gold my friend, thank you! I have one issue when I go to match color. I only have to options to select as the reference and my flawed shot is not one of them. It gives me the window pull and the second ambient as the only options. Any idea on why it is doing that? I can’t figure it out.

Nathan, Excellent video. I have struggled with these issues. Why do you flatten photoshop layers before saving? If I have 2 or 5 layers and exit photoshop with a a save, would it save it differently than with flatten? Thanx

Hello Nathan, do you ever adjust overall exposure of your main flash shot in post? I understand that you do it right on the spot, and I am not talking about ambient/flash difference in stops that you control by shutter speed, I guess what troubles me is how how much the walls need to be lit with flash in order for luminance mode to pass through best color information from that flash shot. I guess the hue is hue regardless of brightness but is it?

Hi Nathan. I have been following along and am at time code 7:35 where you pick which is your "Source" and which is your "Layer". I discovered that you have to have all your files opened in photoshop in addition to opened as layers. But still, I am able to select as my source any of the images that are open in photoshop, but when I go and select a layer, it says "Background" and that is the only option. Any idea what I may be doing incorrectly? Thanks.

Hi Nathan, I'm working from the book now. It says "First, in the "Source" dropdown, select the document you are working on." I'm a little confused about "what 'document' I am working on. The only document it is giving me for source document is the ambient document. I am assuming it is asking for the Flash layer/image I want. When I open it and go to look for the "source," the only document it shows me is the ambient layer file.

PS can have multiple documents open at a time, so you want to make sure the "source" is the document you are working with. Each document has its own tab.

I can't seem to get the colors to match but my main problem is I can't see the correct color of the layer below it (and can't toggle the view on and off with the dialog button open) to see if it matches and then I accept the color and close the box only to find that I have to do it all over again because the colors don't match. How can I view both layers to compare and see if they match?

7:38 For the source you selected image 7217 (window pull) but said you wanted 7214 (bounced flash). I didn't see 7214 as an option in the dropdown. Then on the layer you selected 7214. Why did you chose the window pull shot as the source file? Is that always the one you'd chose?

Source is the file you're working with, and the layer is one of the layers; in this case, you want to select the flashed layer.

I'm a little confused over this as well. If you are only using a flash and ambient layer (normal and duplicated into luminosity mode), what are your selections for source and layer when color matching? It does appear in the video that you are sourcing from your window pull. On another note, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. It is much appreciated!

Sounds like you selected the mask thumbnail, not the image layer thumbnail. You need to select the image thumbnail, not the mask. On the ebook, you don't need a Kindle, just the free Kindle app, which is actually way better than a Kindle. The Kindle app works on nearly any device.
