Forged pistons and aftermarket rods the 455 can easily turn 6300 rpms. The true limiting factor in the Pontiac 455 has always been the oem connecting rods. 👍👍

airflow with iron heads limits them too. My 455 with ported 670s doesn't like to pull over 6000, they flow 90cfm more than stock ports.

Just put together a TH400 for my 66, my shift points are fast, I think this is in my future! Thanks for sharing!

Governor tuning +- 200 rpms per gram of weight from the weights.

Vacume pump hooked to a toggle switch?
@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin3 ай бұрын
It's hooked up to it's own sensor so when it detects a need for vacuum it kicks on. No human control necessary.

Learned something new. I actually never knew you could change the shift points in an automatic trans like that. I used a manual shift valve body kit in my Camaro. I think it was from B&M.

Will messing with the governor also effect low rpm shifting?
@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin3 ай бұрын
It does yes, it spread out the 2-3 shift enough that they aren't stacked almost one on top of another. That's always been a problem in this car. No longer!

Judging by the wire bale for the governor cover, it appears that has a th350 in it? If it does, the low gear sprag is not going to be a big fan of full throttle launches in drive, long term. Especially if there's a loose converter in it. Ask me how I know... Just a heads up from one long time wrench to another. When you have it pulled into manual low the trans applies the low reverse clutch which takes a lot of the load off the low gear sprag.

Recalibrating your governor is a waste of time. In the past I've tried many different spring and weight settings. Eventually i left it at the stock shift points and the car is faster. 600 foot pound of torque around 4,000 rpms is plenty to get a heavy car moving 😆
@SweatyFatGuy3 ай бұрын
Did you put the 4.10 gears in it? If you did, they slowed you down. Otherwise Bob did great with it, I was going to come down and run something, but things happen. I'm going to plan on going next year, maybe I will throw my T37 together and run it with my cast bottom end 455 and a Th400.
@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin3 ай бұрын
No, when the other rear end turned out to be junk we decided to run it just as is with the 3.36 rear gear. It certainly would have left harder with the more aggressive gear and probably matched up better to the converter. But we had a heck of a weekend with it in "street car setup" just adding a set of slicks. Get yours together for next year and come out to play!
@SweatyFatGuy3 ай бұрын
@@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin the 3.36 should be good, the 4.10 will slow it down. Been there done that.. heh. Let it eat in the thick part of its torque band, you'll go faster. 13.0 out of unported 6X heads is pretty decent in a heavy car like a 70-72 LeMans. I have the 68 LeMans relatively sorted out, need to make another test run tomorrow morning. Its going to Missouri unless I break it between now and then. I think it needs a 3.00 gear instead of the 3.50 it has now, or a 29" tire.
