It's not making more power because your AFRs are out of wack and likely everything else too. More rich means cooler engine but it also means you are leaving a ton of power on the table by doing so in many ways. Tuning is about finding the balance for the application. The reason factory bikes are tuned so lean is emissions. The leaner/hotter the engine runs(to a point) the more efficient it will burn the gas. You really should go find a tuner in your area and have a comparison between factory, OTS(off the shelf, what you used here) and custom tune. Also talk to the tuners about the issues with out of wack AFRs either rich or lean. Both too lean and rich have issues, lean is just more scary cause of higher heat. And there's so much more than just AFRs, that's just 1 part of the tune. Also I do not recommend anyone pickup a custom tune from someone else. These tunes are precise to not just the bike but the fuel and atmosphere it'll be used. An aggressive tune from a east coast person with 93 octane at sea level is going to grenade your bike if you live in Colorado and take it up 8,000ft with 91 octane cause the tuner didn't make the tune for that. While I applaud the sharing, be very careful using custom tunes. Hell, be careful using any tune and be aware of what the tune will do and how to best ride it, bike or car.

TTmore, thoughts on….You bring up some good points! I researched the Yoshimura and Akrapovic offerings for the 2014-2018 CB650F, and went with the R-77 by Yoshimura. Yoshimura R&D answered all of my questions and addressed concerns. Basically, the CO2 sensor and the ECM should be able to make small adjustments for the R-77, but that altitude and heat can come into play, thus recommends a fuel controller to be on the safe side. The full Leo Vince exhaust w/wo stock air cleaner is the PCV fuel map I decided to use which I’m pretty certain is specific for use with my PCFC and 2018 CB650F. Wouldn’t the fuel map include changes to the throttle plates and ignition timing?

I have a CB650F, which is a great bike and practically identical to the 650R. It's definitely an underrated bike and I have yet to see another one on the road. But besides that, the engine doesn't really have a lot of extra power to unlock over what it comes with stock. One thing you can do to recover power being lost to incomplete combustion is to side-gap the plugs. This is an old school tweak that goes back to the 60s, but it works very well on bikes and if you are using iridium plugs you will not wear them out - whereas the old copper plugs of the 60s would wear out much quicker when side-gapped. Just by doing this you will smooth out the engine throughout the rev range because side-gapping increases the immediate surface area of the electrode exposed to the fuel mixture. The process to do this is simple. You remove the plugs, and you use a hack saw to cut the ground electrode (the one that you would normally bend to adjust the gap) slightly, so that when you view the plug directly from the top down, you can see the positive electrode. This cut needs to be straight, and the edge of the electrode needs to be free of burrs but as sharp of a 90 degree angle as you can get. You then have to adjust the gap using the bottom corner of the negative electrode that you just cut, so that it is 0.030" (the universal gap that works the best for almost all applications) between the edge of the cut electrodes' bottom corner and the top of the positive electrode. If you do this correctly, the spark will not be fully exposed to the fuel mixture, whereas before the negative electrode would obstruct it. The obstruction does interfere with combustion and it reduces the percentage of fuel that can be burnt with each firing of the plug. By side-gapping the plugs, a higher percentage of fuel is burnt, resulting in smoother engine at all RPMs and improved power. This works on any vehicle that uses spark plugs. If you do not want to modify your plugs, Bosch makes "Platinum +2" and "Platinum +4" plugs that are effectively side-gapped from the factory and might fit some bikes; just make sure to verify that the gaps are 0.030".

Not only will running too rich change the smell of the exhaust, but removing the cat and installing a new exhaust will change the smell, since there won't be any unburnt combustion gases when you have a cat installed. It's a good thing to install a higher flow air filter when you put on a free flowing exhaust, as your engine is nothing more than an air pump, and the more air that flows through will increase your power. You aren't going to make much more, but it will be noticeable.

Placebo effects in medicine suggest purely that there is a perceived benefit when no objective measurable impact for curing a disease can be scientifically measured and or observed. In the case of motorcycle tuning-if the customer perceives a desireable result of power-however-slight-then satisfaction is achieved. If this tune does nothing more than aid in a more linear power delivery without being significantly more powerful in any meaningful metric-the perceived value proposition is still a net positive.

A few things. I'm a light load situation a leaner mixture burns much slower which is why very light load tables have a lot of ignition advance (30-40+ degrees of advance) so the combustion event can finish closer to top dead center of that cylinder. When you lean a cell at light load you can get burble/pops on decel because it's actually a misfire where most of the combustion is trying to happen after the piston is closer bottom dead center. You can increase the intensity of the burble/pops by leaving the fuel where it is and retarding the ignition timing. You can go as far as triggering an ignition event when the cylinder is on the exhaust stroke with the exhaust valve open. You can get some serious flames and bangs that will have the police called because it sounds like gun shots. You can overheat the exhaust valves and damage the exhaust from too much of that. A setting like this is referred to as anti lag for a turbocharger.

Running too rich causes oil deterioration, piston rings do not seal 100%, unburnt fuel will pass by the piston rings into the crankcase a dilute the engine oil, which can lead to engine damage, keep an eye on the oil level and smell, This all was a bit of fit and hope for the best, this really should only be done with a wide and to get AFR readings

If u get the ecu flashed instead of buying a power commander u would be better off cause theres a throttle deceleration cut they can do to most bikes with a ECU flash just find a reputable company and mail ur ecu off explain what you want and they will put the tune on mail your ecu right back and you'll be riding with your new tune within that same month and also cheaper than a power commander in most instances. If u have a exhaust or any mods let them know as they can put on a specific tune for your needs.

If you would live in europe(Austria) where you can ride in the alps, would you recommend the MT/FZ07 or the Cb650r. I am not sure which bike i want to buy. The price is literally the same on both bikes. Any suggestions?

If i remember correctly lean, not rich mixture gets you pops and cracks from the exhaust. rich does everything else yall discussed bot not the off throttle pops.
@aflacduck24 жыл бұрын
Lots of ways to get a crackle and pop. It's more like having a richer mixture go through the exhaust followed by a leaner(hotter one) that'll ignite it. This is generally speaking how crackles work. If you're constantly rich, it may not ever get hot enough to crackle or do so rarely. If you're constantly lean, the exhaust should not have enough unburned gas to pop.
@darkknight13404 жыл бұрын
Having carburettors rather than fuel injection helps with the crackle and pops too.

@shaunalt49942 жыл бұрын
So actually, these motors make the most power when they are run at their absolute leanest possible fuel mixture, dumping more fuel, does not add power.
@솔직한리뷰어-r8k4 жыл бұрын
Hmm I would say it is not worth it to spend that much $ to make a little more horse power. This bike is not meant to be a litre sport bike, I think it has more than enough power for what it is. Well, I am getting a zx10r and I am planning on using my cb650r for commuting and riding with my wife.

Easier way for the tank rather than prop it w a hammer. Get a cheap strap w coated hooks. Run it to the grab bar and to the front of the tank. So much easier 2 work with

Had a dip at 4500 rpm on my 94 cb1000. I added a 3° timing advancer... problem solved! Not sure how the timing works on the new bikes, but you should definitely try that too. You’ll have to run 91 octane, but so worth it!
@1darryloflife4 жыл бұрын
Put it on a dyno and maintain a 14:7 AFR through the rev range. I would put Evans nano glycol in the cooling system which means dumping any water based coolant. There is so much you guys have touched on which shows up the crazy state of play that people have with respect to running an engine lean.

MT-07 and SV650 with that much throttle twist in the mid-range, would absolutely walk away from the CB. And that's the sort of usability of the twin-cylinder engines in the 650 class. In most real world RPM cases, they have more thrust.

So I'm very confused.. I've just been looking on Dynojets website and there isn't a Power Commander that fits the CB650R... I couldn't even find the one that fits the CBR that you mentioned in the video. When I enter the model name, year and so on the CB650R doesn't come up as on option. What's the dealio?
