well there is good science behind that, banana skins contain the most slippery substance in nature ... but we make better ones, also the diff in noisy because of wear not friction (cause the fluid looks good), the diff must have some play

The reason the fluid looked so gross both times was because it likely has metal flakes/dust mixed into it. The fluid accumulates the metal over time as the parts scrape against each other. The fluid normally would prevent this from taking place as much but it's likely not been changed in a bit for it to accumulate such a sparkly and shiny hue

if you do ever want to do this ""properly"", consider semi-fluid grease, we often use it for industrual gearboxes that are leaking oil, because it's more viscous and won't flow as easily

You shouldn't do that on something this new. Depending on the design, even semi-fluid (NLGI 0 or 00) won't circulate sufficiently to get to the wheel bearings, nor will it cool effectively. Not to mention, changing it out would be a hassle.

If you put some new fluid in, with a friction modifier, it'll probably quieten up a good bit. You really should take the water/banana oil out if you want it to last

That diff is on borrowed time so I doubt they're trying to actually fix it proper, this is a nice holdover until they completely wear it out and do a rebuild video, and it provides a very good premise for a very Aussie car video that'll do great on the algo, since bananas as a slip resistant additive is a funny and ridiculous concept.

Old Used Car Dealer Tip: You can restore faded plastic trim with transmission fluid. If you put graphite in the diff it should shut it up as well.

Put wood shavings inside , did it on my old Polish FSO Polonez and worked fine with the differential. I am also a mechanic since 1992 and never heard about the bananas tho.
