Gotta love reliable vehicles. My grandpa had an old 2WD F250 that did everything. It towed trailers and hauled wood and acted as a ladder anchor to fix streetlamps and drove me to school and its still going. The 390 and the truck transmissions in Fords are unbreakable
@drewzero12 жыл бұрын
I had an F250 with the 390. It was a great beater truck and a lot of fun to drive but 8-10mpg meant it barely left the farm. Plus it didn't start well in the winter so it wasn't as useful for plowing as we'd hoped.
@laurenmartinez552 жыл бұрын
@@drewzero1 It's the carb. My personal truck has a high compression 390 with a modern Holley and it starts fine regardless of the weather, I've also heard Eddelbrock carbs work good too. Might need a few pumps of the pedal before starting starting though
@drewzero12 жыл бұрын
@@laurenmartinez55 Yeah, it had carb issues and should have replaced it besides just installing a manual choke. Should have replaced the battery too and taken advantage of the dual battery setup for cold starts. Eventually we replaced it with a Ram that had its own issues, but I didn't need to cuss at it quite as much.

I was handed down an XV30 Camry this year. At first I was really reluctant, but eventually it sobered my outlook on what I wanted out of a car. Everything I was looking at up to that point was either a time bomb, prone to rust, took premium fuel, or was rare and expensive. 284,000 miles on the odometer, starts every time and has never asked for anything more than gas and oil changes. It was never the car I wanted, but it's exactly what I need right now and more.

The beater van where everything seems on the verge of dying and yet is seemingly immortal is the unsung hero of every single punk band, apartment move, small shop, and road trip worth talking about. Love my Honda van, rapidly closing on 500,000km/300,000 miles, held together with drywall screws and harbor freight zip ties, won fights with 2 deer, a hickory tree, and a rental car, and after that rental car i didn't have a spot welder so the entire front end (which is listed as "radiator support" as the part) is held in with literally just bolts which means when that knocking the engine makes when it gets stuck in stop-n-go traffic or the godawful already-rebuilt-once transmission dies means i gotta pull the drivetrain I can just put it up on stands and roll the whole mess out on a moving dolly instead of buying an engine crane

I rebuild motors, transmissions rear ends and all the accessories for a living, and that thing has hauled 4 v8s, an automatic and multiple boxes of parts over 500 clicks without breaking a sweat. It's used to having more power in the back than the front. Only upgrade i did was air suspension because 2 500cuin big blocks aren't kind to any suspension. It's got the legendarily reliable 1mz so i should be good for half a million, just gotta keep up to maintainece and change my timing belt. I'm super jealous you have a van. I used to collect drums, particularly when they were super cheap on ebay. I live in the UK so I usually went after Premier drums because up intil the mid-90's they were fantastic. IDK what they're like today, but they looked terrible a few years ago. Anyway, when I would buy them off eBay, I would have to have them SHIPPED. Now if you're buying a snare or a cymbal, that's fine. But I'm a crazy fucker and bought over 5 drum kits. My favourite is the 70's Kieth Moon kit in concert toms I bought, which has like 15 toms on it now. That thing was 300 quid, with 4 toms and the bass, which was an excellent deal considering their conditon. I lent virtually all of them to my uni like 5 years ago, and haven't seen them since because I'm too sad to go :(. Didn't have the room at home though. Back in like 2008 and earlier, drums on eBay were SO CHEAP it was crazy. I have a pair of 1960's premier bongos I bought for 60 quid, which was steep back then, original skins and everything. Try finding them for under 300 now.

A half million kilos is something else. When I was a little kid, we had an '84 Celica that had 621,000 kilos by the time it was parked for good, and it still ran. My current little car has 210,000 kilos, is 10 years old, and still just chugs along. I had to leave my house yesterday morning when it was -14C. The starter cranked the engine over _twice_ and the thing roared to life. It's an awesome feeling taking care of something old that still basically works like new. The engine will probably need some work in the future because I do push it pretty hard. I'll crack 5k pulling it onto the highway because that's how you get to highway speed in central Oklahoma. The ramps feel 10 meters long and everyone's already zipping by at 120. So if you don't want to be pancaked in a Civic, you gotta put that Honda reliability to the test!

I will offer my shitboxing advice. There's lots of different methods to flush an engine, but I had the best luck using liquimoly engine flush and then using engine restorer. I was burning like over a qt per 3 hours of runtime (60-200 miles depending upon what's going on that day) and now I burn literally none. I've driven 400 miles since that change, several engine cycles. My 187k mile 350 SBC is back to her prime. This only really works if it's piston rings, I'd also replace the PCV valve after doing this. Pretty much just got car to operating temp, poured in the liqui moly, idled for 10-15 minutes, gave it a few revs towards the end, drained it, filled it with the cheapest oil I could and replaced the filter, ran it up to operating temp, then idled for another 10-15 minutes, then did a normal oil change (aka just draining, replacing filter, using my normal oil) and added in the engine restore. Cost me like... $60-70 total to do, significantly easier and cheaper than redoing the rings.

Edit: have you still got the 1984 Honda? If it blows up (let's not hope so) replace it with a VW Bora! (or 2001 Jetta i think it is in Australia) you just pay crap for it and it lasts for so long! I've got one at home (same as the Ibiza) in really good conditions, sort of a nugget, like it has just a tiny hole in the driver seat, worn headlights, and some tiny tiny dents and scratches, it belonged to my deceased uncle, but it's still a beautiful reg.
