The girls at Dutch Bushcraft Knives recently wrecked their Fallkniven F1. The tip broke off, turning the knife into quite an effective screwdriver. Our Chris took some time to fix the knife, thin it out and restore the original profile. Now it is ready for another round of abuse by Muscled Hammer Guy.

I feel it's great that you are supporting the DBK guys and also your production sales with obviously great customer services exhibited in this video!

When you are grinding flat surfaces, like the spine, use the opposite side of the machine. There is a flat spot designed for this. I have used the jockey wheels on mine, like you did and it will damage them as they are plastic. This will throw the belt out of alignement. Its also near imposible to make it perfectly flat. Both the blade grinder and the regular attachment has a flat spot that can be used for this.

Tempering usually happens at 180-220 degrees Celsius, for usually an hour or two, or more. That's why we also feel that is grossly overthought.

Hey Chris you have to be a saint working with those guys over at Dutch Bushcraft Knives . However, in all seriousness I could not think of better people to work with they take the boring out of blade reviews, know their stuff and for promote well, people see this and the masses are following them . I am hoping they end up getting elected as the European Joint Presidents then we might just get a little sense and fun back into our lives. A really informative, impressive and inspirational upload on re-profiling that blade by the way Chris ♠️ 👌 i can't think how on earth that could of happened as DBK take such care of their kit 😂

Take it to a bench grinder and then to a real 2 or 4 in belt sander. That thing is tiny and takes longer. Since that tiny belt sander at cabelas and thought it look cheap. And it cost almost as much as a professional one. Great work!

I think that you are touching various steel materials. Do you think VG 10 steel is suitable for survival knife? Also, what kind of steel do you think is suitable for survival knife steel? What do you think of carbon steel like 1095?
@knivesandtools
@knivesandtools 7 жыл бұрын
We really like 3V-steel. As do the girls at DBK. Check out their videos on 3V. 1095 is excellent when you know its purpose and understand the advantages and disadvantages that it brings. Easy to sharpen, will not break, but will not hold an edge for a very long time.

I would have profiled the shape first. Then worry about the bevel angle. You extended the original 3mm cutting surface to almost a centimeter...which weakens the knife cutting edge and risks blade chipping.

We actually made sure to change the angle on the Work Sharp accordingly. Knife is stronger than ever before like this!

When you ground that much to reshape the tip, you went past the VG10 lamination line and into the soft 420J2 outer layers. Better than no tip at all but nowhere near as good as before it broke off. The F1 has excellent edge/blade geometry in it's original form.
@knivesandtools
@knivesandtools 4 жыл бұрын
It's still a rough fix of course, but by grinding away the 420J2, we expose more of the VG10 core so its still there.

Fallkniven knives are so brittle there is no point in fixing them. By far the best thing you can do after you made the mistake of buying them is to sell them. Preferably before you lose the tip (which is only a matter of time with these knives). Don't make the mistake I've done: First time I lost the tip on my S1 I had it restored, second time I lost it I restored it but again made the mistake and kept it and so one day I lost it again. It's only now that I've learnt the lesson and I'm going to sell it but hey - you don't have to wait for so long.
@knivesandtools
@knivesandtools 6 жыл бұрын
How thin did you restore the tip to?
@branislavboba1699
@branislavboba1699 6 жыл бұрын
As thin/thick as the original. Which means it was and still is rather thick. Just as the original. People tend to try to find the cause of the problem in all sorts of other areas but the truth about it is really very simple: The sandwich idea all seems very nice but in reality it does not work. It's all very nice to have an extremely durable core but that does not protrude all the way to the edge. Which is made out of extremely brittle steel. (Have a look at A1 destruction video and you will notice that however long lasting the core may be you lose the edge right at the beginning.) For this simple reason you will lose the tip all the time. Unless one accepts the reality and sell it as quickly as possible. To let some other Fallkniven believer open their eyes as well.

mmmhh... The front of the blade have been TRIMMED TO MUCH; it will break EVEN EASIER THAN BEFORE. If you break the tip of your knife, when you re-profile it; you should do it in a way that WILL NOT BREAK again (i did it so many times and never broke a tip twice). That shape would be perfect for a "skinning knife" but it is to thin for a bushcraft one (let it go "survival"). Also the technique used is "wrong". This is not important because there is a power-tool involved; but it would be important for anybody that have to do the same work "by hands"... "Traditionally", you give the new profile to the blade (just filing it down to a "squared edge" like the spine of the blade); only when the "new shape" is done, you "re-sharp the primary edge" (in this case "make it convex"). I like K&T shop and i am your costumer too (hopefully this account have not my name on it... lol).

No dude... I am the kind of person (with 17 years survival experience and 24 years hand sharpening experience) that cut a stick, sharp a point to it, and then, use it to dig an hole... STILL... The guy in the video did a good work but he have no field experience; so he did a mistake TRIMMING THAT POINT TO MUCH. PERIOD! It is a Falkniven F1... EVERYONE do batoning with it; the first time it will get stuck in a chestnut log, the point will break again. I guess you too, HAVE NO THE EXPERIENCE TO FIGURE IT OUT; i am sorry for you, maybe in 10 years you will learn... Batoning a part (that is "KZbin Fashion" and it is not necessary in real life 99% of the times); there are tons of thing that you have to do with the tip of the knife... VG10 center layer IS VERY BRITTLE, and if you take the time to check the video again, YOU WILL SEE THAT IS EXPOSED FOR SEVERAL MILLIMETERS ON THE TIP and THE "BELLY TIP" (to much trimming have been done... IT IS EVEN MORE EXPOSED THAN THE ORIGINAL GEOMETRY). When you break a point, you will change the geometry TO A STRONGER ONE while RE-SHAPING THE TIP, keeping the 420J (external layer of the VG10) "ON THE 60% OF THE PRIMARY EDGE" - THE CENTER LAYER MUST BE BARELY EXPOSED -. Other than that THE WHOLE TIP ON THE SIDES HAVE BEEN TRIMMED OUT HUGELY (on the whole eight of the blade for about 7-12 mm or even more from the tip to the back of the knife, - hard to be precise from a video -); at sight i think it is 35% weaker that originally (and "originally was weaker enough" to break on the "table test"...). Instead he should have keep ALL THE MATERIAL IN PLACE (without trim the sides AT ALL) and sharp ONLY THE PRIMARY EDGE (far more obtuse than the edge it self...). What he did is a "SKINNING KNIFE PROFILE" (and because is VG10, it is even to weak for a skinner FOR MY TASTE); it is not for sure a "SURVIVAL KNIFE PROFILE" - IT DOEN'T MEET THE REQUIREMENT -. You think to be clever but seem you are unable to figure OBVIOUS THINGS OUT...

+B4 freedomfighter It is clear that you are UNABLE TO READ... From my previous comment: QUOTE: Batoning a part (that is "KZbin Fashion" and it is not necessary in real life 99% of the times) end quote I did not need your support on it, i know perfectly WHAT THE REALITY IS; thank you anyway wasting your time to explain to others how stupid batoning is... Still... Now that Fallkniven F1 is even more weaker that before; your insults and prosopopea did not changed it a bit... Before try to teach me about "knives or survival"... ...Maybe is better if you return to school and learn to read

Sorry but this complaint is like an old school "you have to do it like that, because it have to be done like that, period!" . Using the techinque wiht the work sharp is not wrong. Sure, If you would do the sharpening by hand your proposed technique would be correct, but why mention this when the video was not about resharpening/reshapening METHODS? It was a funny way to make a joke about "Survival Silly" and of course: restore the F1 to something that would look like a traditional knife. The job was done and the new tip will function as a tip ... like is it supposed to function. The new geometry given is reasonable, and it doesn't matter if the VG 10 is exsposed on the front spine, unless there is anyway some 420J around there. The DBK F1 broke also in the middle where there was enough 420J for the theoretical protection of the VG10. VG10 is not that brittle as someone believes, and the idea of laminated steel is not the best nor the worst. You cannot have a great edge retention and also pretend to have the same blade for pry bar purposes. When you don't want to brake your tip for sure, you can use an Extrema Ratio "Fulcrum C", a back up knife made for italian bomb squads (!?!) which is nothing more than a chisel with some knife edge on ... don't expect to use it for a long time as a knife, but the tip will stay undestructable. Nothing for the woods but just as stupid as batonings, survival expert on lone island with palms and coconuts full of sand to baton with a rock on the knifes spine .....

Uh?! No one here mentioned anything like "wrong because have been done with a power-tool" (since he was keeping it cool with water; everything was fine). The rest of your speech is JUST A LIE, probably based on your fantasy. First at all, the F1 DO NOT HAVE A CONSISTENT PROFILE FROM THE FACTORY. I have 5 of them and every single one is different in the "tip grind profile", it probably depend from the batch (and the years when they have been made); the old ones are thinner, they break way easily. It is something i have witnesses on all my friend's F1; i have been keeping track of it since 15 years or more... The GV10 central layer is IN FACT EXTREMELY BRITTLE (if stripped of the 420J you can break it pretty easily bare hands at 59RC) and this characteristic increase with higher Rockwell. I have some Japanese chef knives that you can literally "SNAP" the edge with a pair of pliers (they are hight quality knives in VG10 "damascus"). For comparison, a knife like the Svord Peasant made of "L6" (the same steel used in Gransfors B. and Wetterlings axes) CAN EASILY BEND TO 90° before breakage; but ANY VG10 steel (without layers) at the same Rockwell will probably break before reach 20° (or even before). Anyway you people are NUTS! I shared here a PEARL OF WISDON and instead to make it yours, INVENT BULLSHITS JUST "TO PROVE ME WRONG"; no comment about the Fulcrum (anyway the edge retention of the N690 is not bad at all lately; it probably surpass the VG10 but it is also way harder to sharpen). When i FIX a broken tip (and this is a GENERAL RULE for any knife) I WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE "NEW STRONGER SHAPE" OF THE BLADE. A good example would be the "PENDLENTON HUNTER" in 3V by ColdSteel... It is a great skinner! It is perfect for his intended purposes... But his tip is "way to thin for any hard task. So... If you break it... YOU WILL KEEP THE NEW "ADDED FAT" without trim ANYTHING on the sides (beside a "very nice convex PRIMARY edge"). Like i said, I HAVE 5 F1 (bought in 15 years time window); write or wrong, i have broken the tips of all 5 (it append especially when the knife have been used a couple of years; "stress, stress, stress, break"). I never did it on purpose; the work that i stress the tip the most is "when i do collect pine resin" (nothing painful, really), and some "carving jobs" here and there... I NEVER BROKEN TWICE ANY TIP; after i fix something IT WORK and never break again! It is not about "use a Fulcrum instead"... It is about "UNDERSTAND THE LIMIT OF THE MATERIAL" and "MAKE IT BETTER THAN FROM THE FACTORY". I repeat this for the last time (wasted to much time here, i will not answer to anybody anymore); "DBK's F1" now is even weaker than in origin; the best use will be, to put it behind a glass as a "safe queen" (it look nice with the engrave ecc...).

Genius, you said "the technique used was wrong"! SO, until he used ONLY the work sharp, he used only techniques related to the work sharp. I told you: If you would do the sharpening by hand your proposed technique would be correct. But with the work sharp you don't need to "square down the edge" because you can apply directly a convex grind. As for my fantasies (more likely you have fantasies): I use a Fällkniven A1 so maybe that's the reason I don't have problems with my tip since 5 years: just the first months I bought it, 1mm of the tip came off because it was extremely fine and it fell straitght on a rock, but I fixed It in 30 minutes with jap wetstones. I use a lot of Böhler N690 and these blades don't hold an edge like VG10 but, sure, they are thougher. I love N690 but the problem is, as you said... it's harder to resharpen, and since it doesn't stay sharp that long, it's sometimes annoying. But it's the best not powder metal steel and allways you can rely on it. I just gave away as a present to a friend my old Cold Steel Pendelton Hunter in VG1 (yes, the one with the hollow grind) and of yourse this was a skinner. I don't know it the CS Pendelton Hunter in CPM 3V is better. I believe the 3V is a flat grind so also more beefy ... but you want to put on it a "nice convex primary edge" so my thought is: why you don't make your custom knives? Why should I be interested in axes steel knives or things that can be bent 90 degrees without breaking? When I hear 90 degrees I will stay away for obvious reasons :) I know, you're an italian bla,bla,bla so I never take a "Pearl of wisdom" from a spaghetti survivalist :D C

you forgot the screw that keeps the belt on. also the flat spot behind where you are sharpening is for flattening the spine. and that knife could be sharper. it ripped a little trough the paper. i make my knifes cut baking paper easy of the blade grinding attachment. if you are gonna make a video make it correct and show the proper use of the machine. the belts should not be used with water also since the machine aint waterproof and the system can take damage from it. ive asked work sharp of this myself.

Thanks for the feedback! We appreciate the time you took to comment! The knife did cut through the paper, point taken that it might have been a bit sharper. But the point of the video was the restoration of the point, which I think we were able to get across. We did not use too much water near the machine. The one slomo shot was an exception to get that nice footage ;) We completely agree that the machine isnt fit to use with water.
