Fixing the Fat Bob Part 3 | How to replace the Primary cover on a 2018+ Softail Fat Bob

The last bit of damage I had to fix up on my 2019 Fat Bob was the gouged Primary cover. This is a long video but I hope that is helps out those that are looking at replacing their Primary cover. The dealer told me this should only be one hour of labor. Took us longer than that, but I wanted to do it myself so that I could do this video. Because, ya know... The glossy primary looks so much better than the old one! I can really appreciate your attention to detail like blacking out the shiny bolt holes.

Thank you and I agree with you on how it looks. And those little details kill me with manufacturers. Why the hell would you sell a blacked out part with blacked out bolts, but leave that bright silver there around the bolt heads? I think I'm developing a new OCD. LOL

@@withPercy hahaha I just commented why they do it before I seen this. Its because the paint cracks around the bolts when they are torqued down if there is paint under the bolt. I put the gloss black rail collection primary/cam cover and lower rocker boxes on my Sporty and the paint cracked around the bolts because of the paint. I ended up touching it up with a vivid black paint pen!

I am ready to powdercoat on my m8 softail primary cover. Did you buy a primary cover through harley OEM ? I was wondering powercoat should not be exposed on shiny side or bolts sits on?

I checked the dominion primary cover and OOOF its 500$ and then 40$ for the little 2 point oil cover. Style aside, no wonder you passed it up. Thanks for oil change tips. EDIT: Those spin handles are a great idea. I immediately put them in my amazon wishlist.

I wanted to seriously consider that Dominion cover but when I saw the price, and knew that the orange tab would not match Sophie's paint, I threw that out right away. I really do like the gloss black on the stock one. And it was the same price as the crinkled stock.

I also thought that the Dominion one would look great on Sophie, those more modern lines totally got with the bike. But this one looks great as well!

The reason the bolt area isnt painted is because the paint around the bolts cracks when the cover is torqued down. Found that out the hard way on my Sportsters gloss black cover!

I hadn't thought about that. So far, the touchup from my frame pen is holding up.

Thanks. I think it looks a LOT better than the crinkled finish of the stock cover. But as I learned from the gloss black rockers I put on earlier this year, it may be a bit more work to keep clean looking.

Bike looks much better, I have a 2020 Performance Orange FLHXS , And my wife has a matching 2020 Performance Orange FLSB , Just recently spent 1200.00 on gloss black parts to make it look like MOCO should have presented it, Was curious about your derby cover, Stock or HD add on ? Did you paint your derby cover? I have a 2022 Fat Bob and I like the orange accents. I have the tiny orange stripe on the tank and the screaming eagle orange fat wires. Id like to add this too.

Thanks. I wanted to ask you how much (if any) oil you have to add to the bike between oil changes? I think I’m using a half quart or so in 3000 miles

I’m at 13K miles and I’ve only had to add maybe a third of a quart once. And that was when I was doing that trip out to the Midwest and back. I was riding the bike pretty hard on the interstates and was also getting some blowback through my air filter. The tech I called during the trip suggested that I not set the cruise at 85mph+. He said that will likely cause the blowback. Haven’t lost any oil there since.

Use primary transmission oil not gear oil.
