The difference between Pablo’s and Luminance is the hardness. Caran D’Ache makes each separate color with a unique recipe to make every pencil in a set the same hardness. Artists requested that. Pablo’s are 6B, Luminance is 8B. Pablos are water resistant; Supracolor are Pablo equivalents, but with water soluble binder. Luminance are water resistant; Museum Aquarelle are Luminance equivalents, but with water soluble binder. All are professional grade. Water soluble binder pencils are not as lightfast as their as their water resistant equivalents. Interestingly, Museum Aquarelle are acid free, making them more archival than watercolor paint made with gum arabic binder (acidic). One Museum Aquarelle pencil is equal to about 1/2 pan of watercolor paint; that makes them very affordable when compared to expensive watercolor paint brands (still made with gum arabic, ick!). Caran D’Ache pencil are also made with more finely ground pigments than any other pencils. And the Caran D’Ache blender pencil adds 10% lightfastness to any brand of colored pencil it covers.

I usually don’t have the time to comment because I am a long haul truck driver. I mount my IPad on my dash so I can watch, mostly listen and glance, while I drive, so I cannot post. I love your guest. I want to comment on how much I enjoy and appreciate they way you include Steve in your videos. It is a real joy to see how your two work together lovingly. The difficult names seem to generally be the actual pigment that I presume are used in the pencil . Most professional paint companies use a similar naming system for their paints. It is actually really helpful for people ordering to know the pigment used.

The pigment names come from chemical names, i.e. Phthalocyanine.

36:17 that's not MIT but IMIT as for imitation, meaning they're not using the real pigment but a substitute, in the specific they're saying they're not using cadmium which maybe toxic. I really hope you read this so you can fix the chart which is otherwise perfect and amazing, thank you so much for all the work you put into it!

The crazy names are pigment names based on the chemical structures found in the pigments. :) I'm a chemistry instructor with a degree in organic chemistry - let me know if you'd like any help with pronunciation! :)

I just treated myself to the Luminance 40 count box, and I was swatching them with this video playing. Maybe they’ve adjusted something in the formula since you made this 2 years ago, but I found these to be the least crumby pencils I’ve tried. I had NO crumbs for 39/40 of the pencils. The names are the pigment names used in the formulation. In all paints - watercolor, gouache, acrylic, oils - professional companies do the same. There are abbreviations… Quin. Purple, Phthalo Green, etc, that are easier to say. Using the pigment names helps artists to color match across brands. Hope this is helpful!

Oh, stop! Don't awaken my most consistent addiction again. Just kidding, I just bought three medium grade colored pencil sets for my young self again last month. When I pass on, I'll leave a history in the box collection of medium-priced colored pencil sets in my wake because I've been obsessed with colored pencils since I was 3-4 years old, disgusted with crayons' messiness already, and had an artsy Aunt M. I spent my "Cleaning Grandma's house $$" at the hobby store, buying bigger and bigger sets. Just basic sets of pencils 65+ years ago, nothing fancy like now, but fabulous in my eyes. Made my own color pages with Dry, Wet and Name columns. You didn't want to argue with me about what is "blue" and what is "green" in the old days. Thanks, I feel a geriatric trip to the Hobby Store coming on with some upgrading. I'll put you two on replay as the NCIS of colored pencils. Discrepancies! As a lifelong transcriptionist/editor, legal and medical, those would get my attention, too; although if you recheck after you're over 70, you may be surprised at how fast that obsessiveness goes South like everything else. Your color appreciation still survives, but you can call the colors whatever you want!

Everyone except for one, maybe two comments were about the pencils. My ADHD brain kept bouncing back and forth but most of the time my thoughts were dialed into the KITTY CAT. We would say Creamy is spicy. There were so many colors. I come to your channel to watch the blending of colors. So pretty. I’m a neon fan. Happy bright and pastel colors are where it’s at.

The colour names are pigment names, they're the chemical component names the same as you'd find if you were searching pigment for oil or watercolour paints.

Amazing review! I am just wondering if you are the first people that have questioned the Swiss company!? I have watched several videos and they did not catch or did not feel confident in their conclusions. I know that different pigments feel differently from one another. Some pigment no matter how many times they grind it up it is corse! I have made my own watercolor paints and cost and coarseness changes from pigment to pigment. I imagine to get a line of products to feel alike and work the same is very difficult! I had trouble getting 10 colors to work together well. Actually, Supracolor is not 120 but 150 colours. They have this limited anniversary collection of 30 colours. Pablo and Supracolor have exactly the same colour numbers and the corresponding colours look identical when you swatch them side by side. Caran d'Ache colour system is consistent across the lines, but not all the lines do the same colours. Caran d'Ache colour system is also a little bit crazy. I couldn't find it online, but I have it in print in a catalogue. Unfortunately, nowhere is there a date on the catalogue, and catalogues available online (2021, 2020, 2019, 2018) do not correspond to the one I have. The explanation runs as follows: "The Caran d'Ache colour classification system was developed scientifically on the basis of the chromatic colour cirle of Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932). At the centre are the three primary colours: Yellow (240P), Magenta (090P) and Cyan (170P). (...) The two inner circles comprise the Caran d'Ache range of pure prismatic colours, numbered with the terminate decimal 0 (zero). The sades in the outer circles are derived from the pure colours darkened with black (terminate decimal 9), blended with grey (terminate decimal 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) or heightened with white (terminate decimal 1). " There is a colour wheel attached but I couldn't find it online. The description makes sense - I'm holding a Light Green Pablo and it's 221, so the pure colour 220 (green in the middle between secondary green and yellowish green) is heightened here by white.

At least for me, I prefer to make my own blends and don’t look to see what someone else has done. But I’m pretty experienced in color theory and color mixing. Newer colorists likely would feel differently.

Both Luminance and Derwent Lightfast are lacking in certain colour ranges. Since the two pencil play nice on the paper together using both sets fills in what is missing in each other.

Thanks for this in-depth look at these awesome pencils, now that I know Luminance are similar to the Derwent Drawing Pencils, I might add some open stock Luminance pencils to my stash. thanks for the giveaway, an awesome treat for any artist! FYI, I have one color discrepancy that you don't show, probably because Caran d'Ache has resolved it: 542 Butternut was formerly called Light Flesh 10%. I'm glad they've changed these names since human flesh can be so many different colors, seems a silly way to name colors :)

I’m relatively new to coloured pencils and have been using Derwent Lightfast. I’ve just bought the Luminance portrait set. I like to choose my colours from my swatch, but find the luminance pencils so difficult - the names are so long and the print so tiny! I have written the number on the barrel sideways and much larger with a marker. I’ve been trying to decide whether to keep them separate or combine them amongst the Derwent similar colours. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who likes their colours in a good order 😊

I would love those for sure, I am actually planning to buy them when I get my bonus at work. I did my first colored pencil review using your chart on my art channel. I'm a beginner but I did have fun doing it.

As for the different names, they did have a name change for several pencils a couple years ago. Like the flesh colors, those are new names. I have seen tutorials with the warm earth names, but it has been a while ago. Also, I love how they give 2 white and black pencils as they are normally used a lot. I have always used their full blender stick, as it seems to be the best blender I have ever used. But I have heard rumors that they are discontinuing it, so get as many as you can! I have even ordered extras. I also like how the color chart gives the actual pigments used, that way you can see what true color family each color belongs to.

I started off buying the regular 20 set then the 20 portrait set with the four extras. From there I began buying open stock online and am finally happy to say that I have completed my full Luminance set just this past week!! I probably spent a bit more $ than if I had just went and bought the complete sets (at that time) I'm thinking LOL. But, oh well, I'm just super happy that I now own them all and they are a different type of pencil definitely, but very nice to use. Am glad that I'm not the only person who gets a bit lost with the differences and variations in the names in all their materials and on their pencils! LOL The only issues I had with the pencils is that some of the printing was worn completely off and some of the dipped ends did not completely match the colour of the pencil. For a high end pencil I thought the QC would be a bit better on this. What a great vid and also wonderful giveaway you are doing! Great job you two!
