The Pennsylvania Rail Road's "Broad Way"! Although to be precise, they had two tracks for local traffic, (with frequent connections to industry sidings) and two tracks for long-distance. In some areas, they had six tracks, with two more to handle local passenger trains stopping alongside the other tracks.

Metrolink is actively being Bullied off the Los Angeles Sub by the Union Pacific. They do not want the company running on their rails; and it is evident by the daily significant delays. That 411 time slot they gave up; they will *never* see it back. The UP will never give back time slots. The same goes for Ventura. It is not SCRRA’s fault at all; they literally cannot control it. It is all Union Pacific as you have for the most part, correctly described in this video.

On the Ventura line the only competition is Amtrak. There is a freight hauler that goes from Gemco i.e. Van Nuys to Guadalupe and returns the next day. The Metrolink trains park overnight at Montalvo..

In addition to expanding the UP-owned lines, it would be even better to see Metrolink buy out half the right of way of each. This was done in Virginia with CSX, and the state also managed to buy a little-used NS line recently. This could be useful along the Alhambra corridor since it would eliminate the single-track freeway median bottleneck on the San Bernardino line and possibly allow a Brightline extension into LA. The best part is that the trench already has room for more tracks.

One note regarding the frequencies of the San Bernardino line, in addition to owning the tracks, SB county also makes more funding available for that line than any other line. That's why they can operate so many more trains. Riverside county is shaped oddly, with the city of Riverside nearly in the top corner and extending south to Temecula and east to palm springs and the Arizona border. There is no unified transportation plan.

Montebello/Commerce deserves a mention as the former location for UP's "outside downtown" train station called "East Los Angeles," and the building is still standing. It is just east of where the Riverside line crosses I-5 and Atlantic Avenue. Today, it's hard to imagine the "City of Los Angeles" or "Challenger" stopping in Commerce, CA, but it used to happen.

As someone who until recently spent his whole life in pedley (I lived 1 mile from pedley station). I can confirm that the city of jurupa valley has a major identity crisis. Based partly on this video, I am almost positive that the reason Amtrak has very poor service south of Portland is due to UP owning the track. The Cascades service has been expanding between Portland and Seattle, while today there are fewer trains between Portland and Eugene than when the service began. I am pretty sure that UP doesn't have any plans to double track the Brooklyn Subdivision ever.

Side track: Which reasons, if any, do UP have to have a good relation with the public sector? Thinking that when Cali HSR is built, and with some additional passenger lines separated from freight, there isn't much need for the public sector to have a good relationship with UP any more.

Thank you so much for making this video. As I am too dissapointed with the new schedules for the Riverside Line come into play, now that I saw the video, there's more to the reason why it couldn't be expanded...not even by another train. As someone coming from Santa Monica going to another property in Pico Rivera, where the Riverside line runs right through, I would really wish for at least a Metrolink station somewhere along the line. Back in the early 90s before Metrolink was formed, there was a concept projected map where all the stations are built, there was actually supposed to be a Pico Rivera station on the Riverside Line when the line was created, but UP unfortunately doesen't want a infill station on its tracks. Fortunately there is going to be a Pico Rivera station in the works as a infill station on the BNSF tracks used by OC and 91 Lines....but it's years off. There is already a feedback out on Metrolink's webpage and eventually once all the feedback is gathered from the new Metrolink schedules, I do hope for a eventual future on the Riverside Line where at least the Montebello/Commerce gets more service at the least. Also, at 2:26, where did you find the guide to all the railroad subdivisions?

Not everyone knows that most of the San Bernardino line from Los Angeles to Claremont is the former Pacific Electric San Bernardino line, and from Claremont to San Bernardino, the ex-Santa Fe passenger mainline. None of this was ever a long-haul freight route. So its not surprising that ML has such a tight grip on the San Berdoo line and were lucky the governments bought it all up.

12:12 You know another thing they need to do besides keeping that reverse commute train? They need to make the Lemon Ave grade crossing (LA Sub) a quiet zone! I live close to this crossing, and I can hear the horns of trains in the middle of the night! The Alhambra Sub crossing is already a quiet zone, while other roads crossing the LA Sub were grade separated. Since there's no room for Lemon Ave to be grade separated, they need to at least either make it a quiet zone or put wayside horns! Maybe they can do a partial quiet zone, where it is no horns from 10 pm to 7 am. Regardless, they need to improve the Riverside Line and if UP can, make Lemon Ave a quiet zone!

Sorry for commenting on an old video, and also only marginally relevant, but still: I think that Metrolink should electrify and double track the full San Bernadino line, convert it to higher level platforms for level boarding, and get a large enough quantity of modern EMUs to run it with metro style frequencies. In particular get many shorter EMUs rather than a few longer, to be able to run a high frequency service even outside of peak hours. To some extent this would initially be "unfair" to other lines, but in the long run this would demonstrate clearly what can be done if Metrolink owns the tracks, or have decent track rights (like for example any future shared tracks with Cali HSR or whatnot), which in turn would likely create political traction for buying right-of-way for the other lines. ===================== Re the line that UP mostly runs as a one way system: How about embracing that and run way more Metrolink trains in the "flow" direction than in the "contraflow" direction? If it would be feasible to add passenger services to the UP line that "flows" in the other direction, that could also be a operated with passenger services in one direction. Run a contra flow bus service, and/or run shuttle buses between stations on the two lines. It wouldn't be great but it would most likely at least be better.

I used to sit at Pasadena Jct. On freight trains. We would held by the dispatcher for Metrolink trains. I would watch the ML trains go by during the early afternoon window. There wasnt ever enough people to pay for the brake shoes or the drinking water. Metrolink runs way to many mid day turns with no one aboard. Like the LAUPT to Burbank or Chatsworth. A big day was 5 people. I had friends that worked at ML and tell me. The UP makes money hauling freight and zero $$ from ML. The Ventura line the only competition is amtrak. The UP runs 1 freight train from Van Nuys to Guadalupe. Its a small train that doesn't interfer with passenger operations.

It still blows my mind that in 21st century Greater Los Angeles trains still run on diesel on single-track freight lines when hydrogen, electric and hydrogen-electric multiple units can do the job faster, cheaper and better for the environment... If there's space along these corridors they need to strike a deal get double and triple tracking done because the cheapest time to upgrade was yesterday...

This is a terrific video! You are knowledgeable about Riverside County, which as always been one of my interests in southern California. I have provincial knowledge about the San Gabriel Valley. I was wondering about the double-train track possibilities going though San Gabriel. One tiny suggestion. You have a great style. Take your time to go into a little more detail. As a frequent traveler. BNSF and Amtrak have a great working relationship - based on years of travel time and conversation on those BUSY train tracks. One more tidbit, Ontario Airport would have a great advantage with Metrolink coming in and out from both directions landing right on top of it.

I disagree that the "solution" to freight rail is reducing our imports from Asia. The actual solution is double tracking both the Alhambra and LA Subdivisions and separating freight and commuter rail. One subdivision would be solely for freight, probably Alhambra while the other subdivision would be solely for commuters. Double tracking a train is hard, but uncoupling our whole East Asian trade system would be harder. Also if there was more domestic production freight rail demand would still be high. It would just shift from moving goods in and out of the port to moving goods in and out of major population centers, like LA and the Inland Empire.

You know what I say screw it give up on this useless line and build a high speed maglev between LA and El Paso via riverside and areas served by the riverside line similar to Shanghai maglev but faster sort of and through to Santa Maria replace Pacific Surfliner (north of LA), riverside line and sunset Ltd west of El Paso. The train service barely exists
@thatrandomguy8124
@thatrandomguy8124 Ай бұрын
maglev is a dead end tech like monorails or gas turbine locomotives. Not worth the cost over speed increase compared to traditional rail (or high speed rail). Even japan has stalled their high speed maglev project and the rest of the maglevs in the world excluding shanghai are rather slow and act like monorails. Triple tracking and electrifying is far cheaper and better in every single way + you will not need expensive contractors and custom rolling stock.
