South Carolina is more southern and North Carolina is like a gateway to the south with a mix of northerners and southerners. For those who are unaware, the reason that Missouri has a “bootheel” (the part going into Arkansas) is because of John Hardeman Walker. During the statehood process of Arkansas, Walker’s land was supposed to be given away from Missouri. Walker preferred the existing state laws of Missouri to the proposed laws of Arkansas, and asked the federal government if his land (the ENTIRE bootheel) could remain in Missouri. The government said yes.

Michigan has the upper peninsula because of water and I recommend you watch How the states got their shapes for more explanation but the main reason is because of the Toledo strip in Ohio.
