The mag dump change should have been implemented several patches ago. Anyone who's played VII even once would immediately realise how awkward switching modes is.

the only time i ever find myself switching modes is when the enemy team has been wiped except for a point tank and its like a 2 or 3v1 so i just switch to mag dump to get the point tank dead as fast as possible.

I only ever use mag dump and burst mode anyway. I'd prefer if you could just press one button instead of awkwardly switching constantly.

Getting rid of auto mode is not a bad idea, it doesn’t feel all that satisfying to use. I also wouldn’t be against them trying to bring back the “multiple firing modes” for a different champion, maybe a damage so you wouldn’t have to worry about insane mobility

Lost ark has a very cool "gunslinger" character where you have a button to cycle left and a button to cycle right, and each weapon has a set of unique abilities I think they could do something like that on a smaller scale, rather than having to cycle in one direction

As a hardcore Vii apologist, this video was actually a super fair assessment that I honestly did not expect. I would miss the range a lot but it makes sense for the other changes... especially that mag dump change which seems really great. Honestly I really like the mag dump playstyle but part of what nerfs mag dump is the fact that you can grapple to enemies because you get in so close that there's such a margin of error for accidentally hitting someone with your grapple which results in basically instant death. I think the ammo efficiency change is really fair as well because with the ammo card on dash i honestly never reload over the course of a game. On a final note I'd definitely miss the range the most but these changes make sense... just give a card some damage reduction on grapple or something so we can get something similar to vatu if we are going to play in that close.

I love these kinds of videos that theorycraft different ideas on how to try and change a character for the better. It's a neat way to get community discussion going around about it. So, I want to bring some of my own thoughts too. What if burst mode was locked to when Vii is wall clinging? His automatic fire mode would be his primary fire, it would instantly swap and lock into burst mode as soon as you cling to a wall (you wouldn't swap back to automatic until you unclung yourself), and his mag dump was just the ability instead of the current swap ability. It would hopefully make the different modes seamlessly transition between each other, and give each one a different role in Vii's kit. I'm not personally familiar with high level Vii play, but I think it's cool that he has three different firing modes and I was hoping there could still be a way to preserve that in a fun and interesting way.

Great vid and suggestions for VII. Especially like the left and right click burst and mag dump. Recently, I accidentally grappled an enemy when trying to get away and ended up dying...was frustrating, like when Grover would do it.

id appreciate a video talking about inara, nyx, grover and furia, since they are the most broken champs in the game rn, if ur up for it, suggest some balance changes since the whole ranked esperience revolves around those champions. also, vatu is the most broken flank in the game so id like to see that nerfed as well even tho its my main flank

I feel like instead of bringing back his old pull with Overcharged, it should be where it overcharges his mag dump in some way. Maybe the bloom, maybe the recoil, etc

@@mikehawk1856 doubt it, the reason it was broken was because of Spring Loaded, and taking into account the rest of changes he has received and Andrew suggests, I don't think it's gonna be as it was at launch.

make grabbing onto a wall infinite. but the timer for when stealth goes off still exists. that way u could stay ona a vantage point and prepare an ambush like his character does lore wise

I feel like all the people (probably roller players no offense) getting mad that you prefer or white knight or something for Evie need to realize something essential. VII has slightly MORE DPS than old 900dmg per sticky bomb Bomb King. Whereas Evie has less DPS than the current 850dmg per sticky bomb Bomb King. Their DPS is as follows. Evie 850/1s, BK 850/0.7s, and VII 150*6/0.65s with the potential for some headshots. Evie and Maeve have Cat Burglar and Over the Moon for some extra damage, yes, but these aren't even the builds that annoy people. Rogue's Gambit and Wormhole are the ones ppl complain are really complaining about (Street Justice cheese aside). It's because they're always complaining about mobility because they either can't flick or track. VII's mobility, in a vacuum, is fine. His problem is he can move around like that but he also wields a hitscan gun that can headshot with DPS and damage falloff that effectively makes him a sniper on some maps. I think he SHOULD be able to do full damage from up on a wall, just not a wall on the other side of the map, through a window, on maps like Brightmarsh and Ascension Peak.

I would also consider bringing the OLD Overcharged along with the current one (in my opinion, it was a fun playstyle) and maybe tweak some things, so it wouldn't be overpowered. It could create a completely new gameplay style for VII with changed Grapple AND Decree 77. Besides that, I 100% agree with your words. VII is annoying, but not annoying enough to absolutely murder his kit (like Kasumi).

How i first thought the swapping worked was you had to use ammo on every mode efficiently. So first you start long range, then you swap to mid as you move in and lastly to close as you get in for the kill. Not doing it that way should give you a disadvantage of reloading being too long, if you only used the one mode. I think this could be an interesting design for a champion.

I think a 15% terror for a level 5 card is a bit unfair it should be more like 20%. Or you can make it 15% in base kit and give us an ACTUAL good card to replace it, i dont want VII to become another vora, vora is a very fun character who was over nerfed. Base line is: dont nerf his mobility unless you make mag dump easy to use on close range I think this change would be good with the basekit mag dump, so you get into close range and use it then get out. Still I don't know why we re talking about VII when we have brain dead characters like betty or dredge who dont even have to GET in line of sight and just hold left/right click at the right angle.

I agree with pretty much everything said here. I was worried when I saw the video title because I didn’t want VII to lose his individuality. But I think what you have recommended is a fair and balanced buff/nerf to this strong character. 1 thing I would do personally which I think would be a buff and a nerf is to remove the latch to walls gimmick of him. Because there is nothing more annoying as a VII player than when you are trying to run away or get to the fight and you use your grapple, then accidentally latch to the wall 2ft in front of you. This would also stop VII from being able to safely get healed by his support every time he is low.

I fully agree that VII could use some fat trimming. Seeing Omen's kit reminds me just how much better a simpler kit that just all works together is than an uber bloated kit like VII's.

dont let 7 pull enemies, drop to 1700 base hp, dont stick to walls, give an extra charge of explosive dash (get rid of the explosive aspect), reduce grapple hook cooldown by a second or two, and only have mag dump (reduce its damage a little though) >:) become spider-man >:D

I ve tried terror at 15% and yeah its not that bad with the infinity cards, so i think it would be a welcome change in base kit if it came with the mag dump on right click

there's a lack of meaningful thougth for specific game play behind the cards and talents... example the first talent affect all the different firing mode... but each should be on a different talents since each talent would focus on a different gameplay... -spring loaded is about going into close range and mobility... and should be therefor be pushing the Autofire mod + slow(frost) from the 1st talent... following your suggestion to remove AFM that talent could make your basic fire mode to be AFM instead -overcharged is about using the Hook to pull someone and therefor use mag dump on that target aswell... thus give the fire Dot on mag dump there aswell... -tribunal upgrade should be then more about longe range while invisible on wall latching... therefor focus on burst mode and electric aoe... so personnally I would remove the default stealth on wall latch and place it in the first Talent along the burst mode electic aoe and had your suggestion to not be knockback from the wall... that would thus enable him to be a wall latching sniper game mode ...

following your or those suggestions I would suggest to make: "fragment" replace "terror" "night watch" to affect kills in burst mode and be transfered to the commun cards replacing "fragment" while "the fear" would take effect with mag dump kill instead. "rapid response" would affect both AFM and MDM make a card called "Trigger Discipline" since the alt fire would be now by default AF/MD depending on if you hold or click it... dunno what that card would do tho

Does no one know about the Vatu weapon tech? I don't ever see people using it. Due to how the Kunai are fired, if you swipe from right to left as you fire then you can get all the kunai to come out in the center. You can actually hit with all three kunai at any range with the tech.

For overcharge a rework I was talking with some friends, it came from a character from apex whose ultimate is getting pumped up and reload time, running speed, and weapons get upgraded to the roof, so in the case of VII a great idea and probably making some kind of memory of its old idea its to pumping him up but instead of giving him more vertical mobility maybe giving him horizontal, so he spins around, with such talent you can punish him by lowering its bomb damage and keeping only one grapple but giving him from 2-3 rollings and as andrew said nerfing or chaning "Terror card" into a you move faster after rolling or a shield

I never got why he gets 2 grapples and a role in base kit and vora uses a talent to just her second grapple, I would argue vii would still be better if he had to also use a talent for 2 grapples so just give vora her 2 tendrils in base kit

also why even bother... tap basic fire key = burst hold basic fire key = Automatic fire double tap basic fire key = magdump... just separate the hook from the wall latch mechanics and make those 2 distinct abilities... make the hook being the alt fire... and wall latch to be a key needed to be held to hold on wall...

why remove autofire mode... when you can just keep AFM and Magdump on the RMB,... holding RMB would make autofire mode... and clicking it would dump all the mag...

you can even make RMB to be autofire mode and clicking BOTH right(AF) and left (burst) would dump magasin... so if you hold burst mode and click RMB while holding it it would dump the mag... but simply holding RMB would go auto firing mode... and left clicking while that would again dump the full mag... that's just more simple... I've already made that suggestion a year or two ago... tho... the toggle of mode is just silly

VII's mobility is necessary, it can be easily countered with CC skills and with the Vll nerf, players prioritize more chronos than resilence. I feel that Vll in this patch is Low-Tier, it's very nerfed, it is no longer used much in rankeds and in your video you showed yourself playing with a moji WTF you were never going to reach it xDDD this without mentioning that it only has 1900 HP.

I disagree, Auto is better than Burst currently. Description states Automatic does most damage of the 3 modes, Burst is really only good if you cannot compensate for recoil a skill similar to what is used in several FPS shooters plus with Viktor, Vivian and Tara though I think they have less recoil.

I kinda hate your take on seven tho i agree with what u suggest, well expect the terror rework, seven is unplayable with terror below 3. I do really like the idea of nerfing his burst A LOT but to compensate removing automatic and make dump more fluid and removing the hooking someone for 200 damage

The game needs balance in general. Ranked makes sense with bans and counter picks. Casuals can just be a mess. If you don’t have anyone with mobility specific to playing against VII I just want to delete the game.

Usually, when a champion has mobility, he has to choose whether he will use the mobility to flank or to approach without the use of the ability and escape with the ability in case the get low so they can increase the cool down increased in his grapple

This vii video ended up being just a bunch of nerfs. I do think that the changes suggested are a very good idea to be implemented, but if burst mode becomes his main mode with range nerfed - he probably needs his damage back too. Unless we're playin with terror becoming the exact value as Vora DR, I don't think Vii would feel very good to play. He currently has to play at range so much because he doesnt win close range engagements at all. Giving him a tool to outplay his opponent would then be necessary.

Your question is misleading because Andrew's suggested changes wouldn't make VII much less annoying to play against. As others have already said, all the best flanks in the game are annoying no matter what you do because they're designed to get in, get a kill, and get out if you play them right. If anything Andrew's suggested changes for VII would just make him more consistent, in principle, with other champions. I would argue that Damage reduction on his movement abilities, and Terror 3 in his base kit, as well as making grapple ignore champions, are all major buffs. The major nerf mentioned here would be to his range, and frankly, I do feel like it's ridiculous that you can play VII as a sniper. Long range + good angles? I think that's fair frankly, but the range is a little too much. Evie and Maeve CAN land shots from downtown, but you can literally see them coming and dodge them--not to mention it much more clearly gives away their positions. From midrange you can dodge Evie and Maeve's shots long enough to get out of Cauterize yourself. VII has less falloff than Viktor, and having no aim-down-sights to compensate doesn't matter when his burst fire has the most predictable recoil pattern I've ever seen on a gun. Andrew's most important point here imo is really just that VII has the mobility of Evie, but more consistent damage than Viktor. Evie might be mobile but she more often has to enter a range that you can actually CC her from. VII's actually annoying playstyle at high ELOs has little to do with his mobility or bombs anyway and more to do with how difficult it is to punish his range. Evie's effective range isn't good despite her projectile doing full damage at long range, because it moves almost as slow as Caspian's Rogue's Tempo without stacks. Meanwhile VII has less falloff damage than Viktor and can quickly reposition to clean up the kill. Sure all the flanks can carry, but if you play them at higher ranks or in competitive you'll quickly notice that this becomes more difficult against co-ordinated teams. Most of the flanks have "snowball" cards, but against teamwork and without support, it's just feeding to lose. TL;DR Evie can blink in and out, this is annoying but predictable and punishable even when it's tough to punish. VII can control the entire perimeter of a fight by repositioning to a new vantage point whenever he's discovered all the while avoiding ever getting into range to reliably cc him. Evie has less DPS than Bomb King, VII's burst fire has the same DPS (technically slightly better) as pre-nerf Bomb King WITHOUT including headshots. All this on a hitscan gun with great range.

As a console player of like five years, always eating dirt whenever a pc player picks Eevie, Drogos, or Mave. I love 7. He's the only character I actually feel mobile with. His health is low, his mobility isn't a total menace until chronos 3 which can take all game to get depending on team. And I think his range isn't as long on console. Maybe it's a game / server bug but often times on burst mode my shots don't reach targets I feel like they should. I don't want 7 touched until the above three are also changed.

Crossplay is tricky, because those three characters would be awful to play on console. I kinda get why crossplay was implemented but it ends up leading to complicated situations where some champions are much better on PC than on console and others are much better on console than PC, which makes balancing so much more complicated. I do not think those three characters need to be changed because of crossplay, instead it'd be nice if it was possible to disable crossplay. Wouldn't be a perfect fix, but neither would be any balance changes made just because of crossplay. Talking about VII specifically, though, half of the balance changes he suggested were buffs. Overall, the changes would make him less clunky to play as while still making him more skillful and keeping all of the things that made him fun to play as in the first place.

Tbh after you straight up said you DON'T like this character at all in the (Let me Explain Myself) video I'm a bit hesitant on your ideas. Honestly I'd say nerf his Range lower the Grapple strength card from 5 to 4% and buff his overcharge talent to 2 charges and he's good

He thoroughly explained all the changes he suggested. Half of them are buffs, even. It's clear he's trying to remain as unbiased as possible. Just because he has made jokes and comments about how annoying VII is doesn't mean he has a secret master plan to make VII unplayable. All of the changes he suggested would make VII much less clunky to play as and would make him a more skillful character while still keeping the reasons why he's so fun to play as in the first place.

"Oh hey guys here's my thoughts on how to balance Kasumi" (que Kasumi getting nerfed into the ground) and now he's like whatever nobody even liked Kasumi to begin with and while I am no fan of her either I do except the fact that she has her fans and that she is a champ. I just don't want Vii to get nerf into the ground so he can gas light us into believing nobody liked Vii to begin with.

But, aside from that, he isn't a dev and he does not have direct control over what the devs do with suggestions. Especially when his suggestions are not the only ones they will be considering. The devs probably also have their own ideas about how to balance characters like Kasumi and VII. I was kinda disappointed to hear the joke about Kasumi in this video because I do want her to be reworked so she's a viable option but again he doesn't have direct control over what the devs do. Kasumi would be complicated to fix so I kinda get why some people are just giving up on suggesting balance changes for her. I still have hope that she will be good in the future though.

Evie is one of the hardest champions to play. She's already a skillful champion. Just because she can be annoying doesn't mean she needs nerfs. Also, half of the balance changes he suggested for VII were buffs. It's not all nerfs. What makes VII annoying and unbalanced is that you get too much value out of him for the amount of skill required to play him well. Evie does not have this problem.

@@mrbee8336 Nerfing the skill required to play her and nerfing the value you can get out of playing her well would make her very boring. If every champion in paladins had the same skill floor and skill ceiling this game would have died a long time ago. We need variety in skill floors and ceilings. Balancing champions just requires making sure the gap between the skill floor and ceiling isn't too extreme. VII currently has a large skill gap, but Evie does not. I think its also worth considering that matchmaking is not exactly perfect and smurfs unfortunately exist.

If she were OP she wouldn't require any skill. The fact she requires a lot of skill to become strong is what makes her balanced. She is a balanced hard champion.

HE DIDN'T CONSULT ME, I DISAGREE! just nerf his range please on burst, and that'd be fine. I think you got the wrong idea in his playstyle Andrew, you are too used to me and weiro mucking about with terror on max and My City on max doing mad shenanigans. Here's what VII ACTUALLY does when in a more focused session of making the most of his kit: His entire playstyle revolves around poking through off angles and using his mobility to change the verticality and the predictability of these off angles. So for example, his best map Brightmarsh has many different routes for him to take to gather off angles on the enemy team, whether that'd be in the small courtyard or the mushrooms on top of the houses or the skybox grapple spot over the water. He excels at this because his RANGE allows him to, while the mobility is able to allow VII to push that range to take more aggressive long range angles on his opponents. If you watch either me or Kana play VII in ranked, you'll see this a lot. Terror is used as a filler card already, adding it base kit would only make him even more stronger by allowing use of Aggressive Dodge more often, or other fillers. Terror doesn't actually change that much other than travel time when using grappling hook. The problem with this card is it becomes too uncontrollable at higher tiers such as 4/5 unless you are using Spring Loaded to reduce the cooldown of the explosive dodge which you'd use to stop yourself mid air with a strafe afterwards. By using a lower tier terror, we don't need to use Spring Loaded to actually traverse and it allows us to put more points into HP or into other more useful cards. Terror just needs to scale less at a 4%|4% tier. His fire-modes, I do agree about the automatic being removed and his trigger discipline being replaced with mag dump. But my main concern with this is, mag dump still will never be used. Ever. For one reason only: The range on it is too short, and the falloff was like omen before he got buffed into an eldritch god with that damn shotgun range. It cuts itself in half around about 30 units, which is just absolutely useless for an entire mag + a reload when your burst fire on tribunal upgrades does that already with a bonus 200 dmg every 2 bursts. So the only thing about his fire modes I would say, nerf burst's range to 100 units but keep the effective range at 300 units to give him that poke playstyle still, else he will be completely useless and have the same problems. And mag dump with the extra reload animation? yeah that is VERY annoying. However, these changes would warrant new card changes to be introduced since you are reworking an entire ability. So here's my ideas for these changes: Unknown caller: Changed from reload speed to max ammo 4|4 to a maximum of 20 extra ammo on tier 5 Night Watch: Ammo on trigger discipline to spread of mag dump being reduced by 10%|10% to a maximum of 50% on tier 5 Rapid Response: Buffed from 10%|10% to 50%|10% since its just recoil, it won't break the game. 90% at tier 5 recoil reduction. (might be wrong, but who knows it sucks anyways.) Red Room: Changed from movement speed to reload speed after using mag dump 10%|5% for 4s to a maximum of 30% reload speed bonus. The Fear: reduce your active cooldowns by 10%|10% after scoring a killing blow with mag dump. 50% at tier 5, and will reward him for being aggressive and putting himself in danger. These are obviously just my card changes, but it has to be done to rework trigger discipline. Feel free to come up with your own. My overall comments summed up incase you are confused: 1. his mobility needs to stay the same so he can remain viable in ranked. 2. automatic sucks and should be removed, but might be too much work for the devs. 3. yes he shouldn't be able to grapple enemies for 200 dmg, its a movement ability not a damage ability. I just feel this was made out of pure hatred of me and weiro doing some trolling with his hyper mobility and terror 5, he isn't that problematic I don't think. hes annoying to play against, sure, but so is lian, so is a controller player.

VII is genuinely one of the most annoying characters in the game to fight, and it doesn't matter who's at the helm as long as they aren't worse than gold. I'm far from the only one saying this. Yes, aim assist is annoying, but there's nothing I can do to help with that. Lian is moderately annoying, but she used to be *so much worse*, trust me. I've had lots of ideas brewing for a while (like that removal of automatic mode) that I wanted to finally articulate in a video in hopes that it can help VII to be both more fun to play as and to play against.

As a Vii main, I'd say he's in a pretty fine place. His mobility may be too good, but it took me since his release till now to even manage and land proper shots while in air. Each of his firing mode requires skill because Burst may be insane but requires perfect precision; while auto mode is just slow and pesky & can take forever to kill someone. Plus, with flanks like Zhin in the game that require zero knowledge and have dozens of counters which make him almost unkillable specially with a pocket; I'd say he's not to be worried about.

I agree, he may be really strong in the right hands but he's not easy to pick up or master at all. he's also not hard to counter/scare off if the enemy plays as a team. but I do think his range should be nerfed a bit

Evie is frustrating to play against. Evie's mobility is a nightmare as well on majority of maps. How about we start nerfing Evie then? Don't be biased. Let's increase the cooldown of her teleport ☺

Evie is one of the highest skill champions in the game. VII is not. The amount of value you can get out of a character should depend on how much skill is required to play them well. VII is easy to get a lot of value out of compared to almost all champions and especially Evie.

Against a good evie you literally cant do anything cause the game literally turns into a singleplayer game for evie.

@@cyberclone9231 Yeah, flanks are gonna be unfun to play against if you main damage or support, or if you mainly play champions who are countered by flanks. That would make sense. But, that doesn't necessarily mean nerfs are needed because unfun doesn't always mean unfair. Any skillful character with a high skill ceiling is going to be annoying if the person playing that character has the skill required. It's just part of the game. The devs just have to make sure the gap between the skill floor and skill ceiling isn't too extreme or that would be unbalanced.

@@inconspicuousonlooker1605 Unfun doesn't always mean unfair, though. Evie still needs her team to play well. If an Evie is taking over a whole match then you're probably dealing with a smurf and/or poor matchmaking. Flanks in general wouldn't be able to do anything without their team doing at least some of the damage and distracting the enemies for them so they can flank around to the enemy backline. I think flanks are considered the most annoying class because their job is to use their mobility to confirm kills. It makes them stand out more since they're normally the ones getting a lot of the kills. It's annoying but that's their job.

I didn't play competitively but I did participate in casual games and paid for the seasons because i had fun for a lot of time, but after release of VII and the horrible changes of Kinessa's the game was not enjoyable, for these reasons I quit, but I still love Paladins
