We are taking our bluelandy from Cape Town to Jeffrey's Bay, looking to surf and camp in the wild as we are used to, in one of the most beautiful stretches of coast ever. it is not as easy as we thought.
We had to find a new camera, after many days looking at the second hand market we payed a visit to Cameraworld and found the camera we were looking for! later we also found a wetsuit for Irati and we were ready to leave towards the East.
Our first stop Betty's Bay. It was a beautiful surprise and turned out to be one of our favorites places in the whole route. We continued but got kick out of the parking lot by security during the night and we had to come pack to Betty's Bay.
We continued east and stopped in Cape Aguhlas , the most southern point in the African continent. We were still looking for waves but we're not so lucky and got kicked out again in another parking lot and had to drive 50 km to find a new spot. One in the middle of a beautiful wild area, but we had to leave early as we were not sure if this place was private or not.
We check for waves in Victoria Bay, Plettenberg Bay but nothing surfable. This time we decide to go to a campsite. The next day we hike 10 km around Robberg Nature's Reserve in Plettenberg Bay. This is an incredibly beautiful hike, green and flowers everywhere and beautiful views of the seals enjoying the waves. The terrain changes constantly and one walks on single tracks, on dunes and rocks. It makes it to our top hikes in this trip.
After a successful wild camp in the mountains we make it to Jeffrey's Bay /JBay. Here we finally can surf and stay nearly a week to rest ,in reality we are busy planning our next steps as the shipping will take at least two months until Montevideo.
Enjoy the Ride!

Glad that you had a good time in SA. Freedom or wild camping in SA is tricky (trespassing and squatting are big landownership issues) and very risky at best. I know you have moved on now but for other over-landers; it may be an idea to try and get into the networks such as couch surfing or the guest farm community. Even rocking up at a small town pub for a beer and a chat to the locals at the bar may find you a farm to overnight at or a safe driveway to park up. Camp sites and caravan parks are reasonably enough priced on the whole, even in these places smart campers lock their gear away each night these days. Happy travels, thanks for sharing these great videos. Sorry about that camera.

Thank you for your comment! We would have loved to get in those networks, but it is pretty difficult without and app for such thing. The job to Network in a town for the sake of finding a place to stay, it is more work than just staying at a campsite when we cannot have any other solution. That's why I say, having an app to meet landowners ready to accept campers might be the way to go, to find balance. For us Couchsurfing was only possible in cities until now, we did it in Cape Town! We love it but we only do it if we are sure we can interact with the host during our stay. I don't have the final answer though 🤷 thank you for watching and see you around 😎

Guys compared to Namibia and Botswana South africa has a much larger population. This means alot of the land is either owned by someone or is a nature reserve or municipal land. Also from a conservation perspective we have alot of local and international tourists the visit that stretch of coastline, if ppl were allowed to camp wherever they like you would have forest fire and litter problems along that coast line. Camping has to be attached to certain rules that are enforced. Unfortunately it is also alot safer to camp at a campsite, ppl may take advantage of your isolation if you wild camp ,although most of the crime is concentrated in the cities.

We understand your point, still we would wish there was more of a balance. I think both can exist in a country, and regulated, in the sense of habilitating people public areas for it. But again this costs money from taxpayers and it's easier to push things to private camps.

Our former South African friends, now living here in Australia, tell horror stories about being robbed while camping in SA and having to have guards on their camps, and contrast it with how safe wild camping is in Australia, so be careful.

Many people told us the same, we understand. We still prefer to camp in the bush, in SA and all the countries we have visited. We also go to campings once in a while as shown in our videos, but even on the ones in the middle of nature, the overall experience is not the same. But yes, we agree South Africa might be the country to opt more often for campings.

Not "Might".....dont get drawn into complacency....(keep in mind the number of farmers killed in the countryside...South Africa is a dangerous place....the media doesn't cover it....because there is money at stake from tourism) Those white coloured Canon Lenses are pricey...what's the bet it was stolen off another tourist!!(recycling in South Africa).keep that stuff out of sight.(think about getting that plastic film stuff you can put on your windows which slows down smash and grab attempts) You two are well matched one could suggest.

Hey Bert! The situation in SA is sad. I can tell you that from all the countries we have visited this one felt the most dangerous. We luckily didn't experience or saw anything, but we have heard many stories. I don't know what the future will bring but based on the decisions of the government, it doesn't look like it's going to improve. It breaks our heart to see such a beautiful country and people, with so many resources, being in this situation. Regarding the camera , all the lenses are old and were bought in the USA. So no recycling. Regarding the new second hand camera I trust the shop, one needs to leave personal data to sell and buy. We were lucky to find one in the shop and didn't have to buy in Facebook Marketplace where we would not be sure if the camera was stolen. And yes, that lens was only out in Robberg Reserve. Everywhere else with people around and malls, was only the small Sony, for safety.

You are lucky not to have been robbed or worse. This is both a warning and a request to overlanders - South Africa is not safe and people are desperate. Dont take stupid risks and be responsible. It is not cool to camp on private or public land with permission unless wild camping is explicitly allowed. Dont bring a bad name on overlanders and spoil it for future travellers.
@Thebluelandy
@Thebluelandy 10 ай бұрын
It's sad to hear this. South Africa is the first for us in terms of being actually dangerous. We always took care to don't be obvious to protect ourselves. Regarding the wild camping, I understand your point . Still we will always support the concept of freedom to roam, and giving access to the public to wild places. In the case of South Africa and Namibia this is a general challenge. we wish there was a simple way (could be an app?) of contacting land owners to request allowance to wild camp in their property. That would be awesome and create a more healthy balance. What do you think about this? Or do you know of any platform to do this? Thanks for you comment as always!
@amolkarnik9709
@amolkarnik9709 10 ай бұрын
@@Thebluelandy I hear you. Ones right to roam cannot take priority over ones right to private property ownership and ones right to control access to that property. Imagine a scenario where you were camped on someone's private land without permission and used the bush for going to the toilet. This is natural wild camping but it does raise the point about the property owner being unhappy and perhaps having the rights to bring charges against you. Is it fair to inflict this on someone else and is it worth the trouble. I must say you have been lucky that you didn't get into trouble or get robbed but please remember, people are desperate enough to steal a brass tap fitting to sell as scrap and happy to use violence if required. Your laptops and cameras are super high value and they won't hesitate to slit your throat. It doesn't happen every day but if it did it would be very unfortunate and the finger of blame would be unequivocally pointed at the victim for being careless. Besides you would only serve to amplify the SA is a dangerous place message. I have moved to live here and I haven't faced crime but that's because we dont take unnecessary risks. All over SA there are numerous inexpensive campsites that are safe and offer excellent facilities. Use them. I don't know of any app such as the one you mention, but I imagine most landowners willing to get on these apps would want to be paid for allowing use of their land and are more importantly aren't interested in turning their property into a campsite in the first place.
