A role playing game based on a monster hunter who is completely devoid of any stealth gameplay mechanics is a masterpiece? In Bizarro World perhaps... 1. Hunters use traps. 2. Hunters use cunning and guile. 3. Hunters do not just charge ahead at their prey with no planning or preparations like Sir Geralt of Rivia does! This is precisely why the combat sucks so much in The Witcher 3. Because your only option is direct combat! No stealth kills. No death traps. No grappling. Just melee attacks. Meh... 😑

Thank you for this video. I agree with all you said except for one thing - Gwent. Gwent is incredible. I had my difficulties in my first playthrough with it. But I started my fourth because I wanted to play Gwent. And after 1000 hours I still sometimes get the urge for a round of Gwent. And then I wanted to add a few things. One can feel the developers' passion and love for the source material. They stay true to it, so the games feel like a natural continuation to Sapkowski's books (btw it's An - zhey supp - Koffs - key --- the capital letters indicate the stress). There are few and very minor deviations, which can be explained by a different interpretation or "lost in translation" as I don't speak Polish and thus never read the originals. And the attention to detail is unbelievable. The game takes into consideration, which route you took. Just one example. If you happen to do the Novigrad murder quest before going to the Vegelbud's party (which is rather unlikely due to availability and level of the quest), you clearly haven't met Lady Vegelbud until then. When you burst into the garden, looking for the murderer and his next victim Patricia Vegelbud, you get a different dialogue with her daughter-in-law Lady Vegelbud. Last but not least, there is a detail, probably noticed by only a handful of players, that baffled me, when I eventually discovered it. Well, in the whole game you see a lot of signs, posters, graffiti, even embroiderings on mages' clothes - the runes. Those runes always felt irritatingly familiar to me, like I had seen them beforehand, but I couldn't quite point the finger to it. Then I recalled my university studies from 30 years ago. While learning about Old Church Slavonic, the liturgical language of Slavic Orthodox Churches, which is written in Cyrillic letters, we also learned, that there was another alphabet, used for a short time (less than 200 years) by medieval monks and which is passed on in a few dozens of handwritings. This alphabet is called "Glagolica" but I remembered it with very round shapes, which is not what the "runes" look like, they are rather edgy. So I compared the runes with Glagolitic letters, and some kind of matched but then again others didn't. So I dug deeper and read about a special, "square" form of Glagolica, which was used by catholic priests in Croatia up to the 19th century. And they were a perfect match. So on my next playthrough I made screenshots from all the signs and posters, from maps and graffiti, and started to decipher. I was overwhelmed by what I saw. It's not an incomprehensive mix-matching of letters, it's a transcription of real texts into this other alphabet. The signs for shops are correct. The butcher in Novigrad has a sign with "butcher", all the smiths have signs with "armorer". The posters promoting Radovid's policies, the posters with the pictures of Tamara, Anna, Triss and Philippa, they all show their actual names. The posters regarding the court marshaling of perpetrators or ordering people to work for the Nilfgaardians in Velen, they read the same (in English) as what you are given in the overlay. Some of the graffiti is very "juicy". So (maybe to circumvent censorship?) they are in Polish (like in Triss's yard) or they are mirrored (in the "Alchemy" tavern in Oxenfurt). Some developers clearly had a lot of fun with the implementation. All that I mentioned had just one purpose - to show my love and appreciation to a real masterpiece.

There is another thing to consider when you decide what to do with tree spirit. When you set it free, it will kill whole village. When you kill it, the crones will eat children that where under Anna's (Blood Baron's wife) care. And you learn the outcome after your decision. That's what makes this game so powerful -- you may think you know the outcome of each decision, but you'll never know for sure. I still think that Bloody Baron's quest should be a part of ethics courses. Because while you use some thought experiments as trolley problem you always examine them by the outcome, while in real life you don't know how your decision will affect the world beforehand. I completed this game like 9 times, at least 4 times with DLC's (main quest storyline in Hearts of Stone is one of the best pieces of narrative in modern popculture). And I'm Polish, though I have no idea how to explain pronunciation of Andrzej in English.

(1) Choose, will you to trust the crones or the spirit tree, there's no neither, said the game (1.1) Trust the spirit tree.. surprise mothefucka the crones has just decided to kill the entire village.. And we also decided, your bloody baron will not have the will to live anymore, yay. There's no other outcome than that two options, and both feel sucks to the end. I always wonder how Geralt could sleep at night knowing every decisions he made on his entire long lifespan could have ended up differently.

@lughlongarm764 жыл бұрын
WhoDarestheMAN gamer that’s actually really not quite true. Many of the hallmarks of fantasy are more Renaissance than they are medieval. The bulk of the medieval period looks nothing like The Witcher. Tolkien also only very reluctantly applied that appellation to The Lord of the Rings.
@lughlongarm764 жыл бұрын
WhoDarestheMAN gamer you’d be totally correct if your reckoning of the medieval period were accurate, but generally it’s agreed to have started well before 1066-try some 500 years earlier or more. Much of medieval European warfare actually didn’t involve much armor at all. Armor was incredibly expensive and most weapons, throughout most of the period, involved as little metal as possible, so axes and spears were much more common. A lot of our conception of the Middle Ages comes from writings that dealt with the very wealthy, or were simply wild exaggerations, or date to well after the medieval period, even. Those are among the host of reasons that much of ostensibly medieval fantasy much more closely resembles the very end of the Middle Ages, and some features downright exclusive to the Renaissance or even much later. Things like cities having sewers, for example, are pretty blatant anachronisms. I can’t say off the top of my head what year it was that the first sewer system was built for a city, but I’m pretty sure nothing like what we see in the Witcher 3 ever existed in the Middle Ages. There’s not necessarily anything wrong with picking such a narrow time period. It’s only natural to liken a hypothetical time period (it is fantasy, after all) to our own modern world. But it’s at the very least something to keep in mind and I see people thinking fantasy is a lot more accurate than it is. But it’s really not in some pretty big ways.
@lughlongarm764 жыл бұрын
But I absolutely agree that the Witcher has pretty damn accurate armor and clothing designs. It’s not quite Kingdom Come: Deliverance, but it comes considerably closer than just about any other fantasy game. The Witcher book series is much more accurate to the Middle Ages. Really impressively so, in my admittedly non-expert opinion.

@Poppylist PartyI get what you are saying but I think the reason for this period of time being used is because most of the storys about dragons witch's merlin trolls and so on were first recorded medival times so the two kind of go hand in hand although obviously dragons Griffins and so on are not real to put them in say victorian time's feels like a lie when people think of dragon times that's the period of time everyone thinks of that's the period of time that has been pushed on to us take Dracula he doesn't feel out of place in any period of time because one he's immortal and we are used to seeing him every period if that story was changed to he only came about Georgan times it would feel wrong hope that makes sense 😊

I remember the first time getting this game. Bought it a year after it's release because of all the hype around the series and the first gameplay reveal at E3 was amazing too. Was always interested in playing the original 2 but never did. So going in I was very confused about the story and character relationships. First time didn't go so smoothly, I guess I didn't have the patience for the game at the time and felt bored and didn't like some of the movement mechanics. I thought "really, this is it!?". Dropped the game for almost a year, until I decided to pick it up again, this time doing my research on the story up to that point. After I got pass the few hours I considered to be slow and grindy, I was completely enthralled into the game's world and 100% sold before I even got halfway through it. Although I still think some of the movement is very clunky and I still don't like some of it. But that didn't stop me from completing every contract and trying to do as many side quests as possible before beating the game. After beating it. I couldn't believe I let the game gather dust for as long as I did. It easily became one of my top most beloved games since.
@twinmama424 жыл бұрын
You really should try the first two games. TW1 has a superb story and an enthralling world to explore. Both capture the spirit of the short stories and Geralt's looks are closest to the descriptions in the books. Yes, graphics and character models of less important NPCs are not up to date with modern standards (just think of how old the game is), the engine's limitations are tangible, but the musical score is even better than TW3s. The alchemy system is the best of the three games. The only throwback is the combat system as it is more of a rhythm game than anything else. Or watch a game movie to just experience the story. TW2 is a totally different story. The game looks better than many games that came after (esp.the faces are so darn good). The combat is okay, only (a little) worse than TW3's imo, but for most people a big improvement to the first game. The consumption of potions is closest to the books. The story is highly political (inside the game's world) which is more akin to the 5 "Ciri"-novels. And you get 2 games for the price of 1. As you have to decide between two opposing factions and therefore play two very distinct and separate storylines, which intertwine at some points. It's like the decision between mages and templars in Dragon Age Inquisition, but in DAI it is mostly just this one questline and some minor changes afterward. In TW2 it is about two thirds of the game.
@darthinkarnatus72643 жыл бұрын
I did the same thing... After I picked up again, I beat it 4 times consecutively. I can’t believe the DLC’s weren’t even mentioned! Blood and Wine is the greatest DLC ever made IMO. It’s could’ve been it’s own game. It pretty much was! Just a 10/10 in every conceivable way. The combat and movement was clunky and annoying at first, but it grows on you and now it adds on to the charm of the game 🤷♂️

Hey Fizhy, I played this game over the course of about 4 or 5 months last year and finished it all upon your recommendation and videos you did. It was on sale on Steam for $15(!!!!) for the game of the year edition with both DLCs. I can wholeheartedly say The Witcher 3 is my favorite game after playing it - and it's well higher than 2nd or 3rd place. I finished the main game, did the Hearts of Stone DLC which was wonderful, then moved onto Blood and Wine DLC and by the time I felt I was nearing the end of that DLC I was legitimately sad because I know there is no other experience with a game as the Witcher 3 offers. Such a fantastic immersive game and I cannot compare it to any other game as it's in its own category - nothing can touch it, but I hope one day there will be a game that makes me feel the same way as my first Witcher 3 play though (including the DLCs). Btw, Jesus man, those DLCs are other entire games essentially. 10/10.

I played thru this game three times and literaly, only just now, realized that the stylized roman numeral III was made in the shape of the paint on one the Wild Hunt's faces. Dense, is I, dense. I love this game, and loved the stories. I was won over relatively early when there was a female healer in White Orchard who did a strange hair toss, and was completely unique in the game. There are lots of unique moments....But then there are, like, seven character skins you see in most of the other quests. Far too many oaf characters.....Then, for no reason, random bodies, found in random places that were a result of your actions 14 IN GAME HOURS AGO. The Geralt character is awesome. The voicing is terrific, and no wonder Cavill is trying to channel that voice. (The audiobook guy is a good reader, but his Geralt voice SuuuUUUCCKKKS>) I loved, and love, this game. I wonder, though, whether, Arthur Morgan, and his story, might trump it a little. Similar mechanics, far more tragic a tale.

I have just started playing this game for the first time. Never played the witcher before. This game is fantastic. The world sucks you right in. When you are in the woods you feel like someone is watching. It's eerily beautiful.

Six years later, there is still isn't another game that comes close to checking every box that the Witcher 3 does, both organically and handedly. It will remain on the throne for years to come.

I really enjoyed Gwent, not because of the game itself (although it is a cool mini game) but because of the characters on the cards. Nearly all the cards are established characters that appear in the books and short stories and I've had trouble picturing them in my mind while reading. But now all those characters have a face that I can connect to their names which makes reading all the more immersive.

Lovely video! The game is an absolute masterpiece and played it on PS4, XBONE, GOG and Steam for about 600 hours and still going strong today!

It's the best game ever made. Everything in it feels so unique. Great open-world, amazing characters, memorable quests like Blood Baron, Battle for Kaer Morhen and that drinking sequence and dress. Man, what a game. What sn experience that was. I have it on Steam and GOG. Maybe i will buy it even on Epic store just to support the CD Projekt and experience this masterpiece once again. P.S. All hail, Geralt of Rivia! ❤️

I absolutely love the music in this game but I do have one gripe with it: the same music plays over and over again For example exploring Skellige is an absolute treat and it’s music was beautiful for the first 10 hours of exploration but if I have to hear the same singer say “Hope-ah” again I might loose it

Really well made video Fizhy, some of these point remind me of how much i liked ac origins; keep up the awesome entertainment! Ps. If you read this would you ever consider a video on AC Rouge; im not trying to ‘backseat’ youtube but i thought it was quite underrated and perhaps your opinion would make a great video. Thanks for reading; sorry if I am ‘backseat YouTubing’ i mean well and am just suggesting an idea. Stay well, thanks again. :)

I absolutely love the Witcher wild hunt. Especially the soundtracks mannn so many tracks got me in my feels lmao, I especially love the toussaint OST and the track "the slopes of blessure" absolutely amazing and I'd say toussaint is also my favourite location just beautiful and whimsical and much more vibrant than the other locations while also housing one of the best stories in the game with the entire blood and wine DLC being my favourite story... No end of the world plots or giant continental war... Just a Witcher, a job, and a monster... LOVE IT Also one of my favourite quotes "if you acknowledge any gods. START PRAYING NOW"

I, like many, never gave the Witcher the time of day until the Netflix series came out. So glad it did though as I’m now addicted to the world and lore. Started playing Witcher 3 and smashed through it but I’ve had to stop because I don’t want it to end. I’m trying to only play it once a week to make the experience last. EASILY the best game I’ve played.

I remember thinking I’d never play Gwent. But after many playthroughs, I thought that if I want to really be a fan of the game, I tried it and surprisingly didn’t hate it. I spent countless hours until I was sick of it and now I play the Witcher, but never Gwent.

I can't bring myself to play this game. I don't know if it's because I'm playing on Ps4 or what, but the gameplay just feels awful and awkward. I bought this game on sale before I bought Doom Eternal and Days Gone and I finished both of those games before Witcher 3. I've been trying to get more into RPG games ever since I played KOTOR for the first time last year and the Witcher 3 looked so promising...until I picked up the controller.

tried to play the game twice on PC tbh, but I just couldn't. maybe it's too much dialogue and it was just too boring for me, maybe because combat, gameplay, animations, general feeling just wasn't good.

Same thing happened to me, it just sat on my hard drive for about a year. One day I saw another post explaining how incredible it was and I just decided to try it again.... I then beat it.... 4 times..... Consecutively It is the greatest video game I have ever played, without question. In a way it’s a good thing you haven’t played it. After TW3... pssh... good luck finding a game that’s able to live up to TW3’s standards. (Spoiler alert) You won’t

Out of all the things that was great in this game, I think the writing was phenomenal! Every character, every quest, even random npc's who would have different accents based on the location that you are in. Every quest had a level of depth and immersion that the story and the world really felt alive and meaningful! I mean if you go to the quest section and select a quest, you can see on the right pane that there are at least a few paragraphs written just about the context of the quest! How many games do that?! It shows the amount of writing that went into the making of this game! So, I think the writing was the one that brought that level of immersion and depth to this game and this world.

Outstanding job on your content!! I’ve been trying to get my best friend to play this for 5 years, and bought him the game with all the dlc included. He usually asks me for game suggestions, but really doesn’t understand what he’s missing. CDPR created the best game in my opinion, and I can’t wait to get my hands on Cyber Punk later this year as well! Keep up the great content.

Skyrim walked so Witcher 3 could run All jokes aside, Skyrim holds a sentimental value to me (very first video game I bought, and first RPG I played) but Witcher 3 is leaps and bound beyond phenomenal. Truly one of the human race’s greatest achievements.

The Witcher 3 is a cRPG. This connects it to all the classic "computer" RPG's of the past (as opposed to console style RPGs of the past). Deep skills and perks. Many different types of weapons and armour, a world full of mystery and wonder, deep characters and story-telling and a main quest, at least, that keeps you interested in playing the side quests. They don't have to be third person, they can be first person, top down, isometric, etc. So the Witcher III, not a JRPG, but a cRPG. Part of the pedigree of great PC RPG's, like the Wizardry series, the Ultima series, the Baldur's Gate series, Darklands, Gothic, Kingdoms of Amalur, Outward and so on. The Witcher games in general are connected to this historic pedigree that goes back 40 years.

What? Witcher 3 is literally nothing like a CRPG, neither are half the games you listed.
