Brompton folding bike is not optimal for touring, but with front and rear bags touring is possible.
In this video I introduce my Fjallraven Abisko Friluft 45 backpack and why and how I use it in my Brompton. To organize straps of backpack, see this 1 minute video: • 17. May 2023
The video is not sponsored by any company or trade mark, I just share my own opinions.
I also show my Brompton touring setup for a mini-tour, i.e. short overnight trip on August weekend in Northern Finland: from Oulu to Muhos (Montta Camping) and next day to Utajarvi.
Backpack: www.fjallraven...
My saddle on this tour was from www.spongywonder.com
I bought my bottle case long time ago from www.radicaldesign.com, seems like it's not available any more.
The phone mount is Waltter fastlock bike mount, I bought it years ago from a local store. I can use it both in Brompton and in my other 28" bike.
My tent is MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2 person tent.
My Brompton has 12% reduced 6 speed gearing.
Dont't hesitate to comment or send questions.
I hope you enjoy the video!

Great video and useful to see how the backpack attaches. I use bungee cords but it's time consuming.

Congratulations for your new travel companion. I hope you find ways to utilise what’s best in Brompton: biking combined with train, bus or other “take-me-far-from-here” transportation.

Taner, thanks for watching and comments. I think I need some more ridden kilometres with spongywonder before making a review of it.

Rick, thanks for comment. I actually had more than I needed for overnight trip, but I wanted to test if I could carry everything I need for several nights wild camping trip. With this setting I can take everything into train in one go: Brompton in one hand (Ikea Dimpa), Borough bag in another and Abisko Friluft on my back.

Was there any special note when attaching to the spongy wonder? This is the saddle I want to use, very similar to your setup

Hi, thanks for watching. I’m not sure if I understand your question, but neither Fjallraven nor spongy wonder has any recommendations for fixing the backpack to the saddle. In spongy wonder saddle there is natural metal bar for attaching something, so I use it for fixing the top of the backpack.

Hi JC, thanks for watching my video and feedback. I'm curious about what you liked in my video: do you have Brompton or are you interested in backpack itself? Regards: Pekka, Cycling Finn

Do you think the 35 L version will still fit the Brompton setup?
@finn111
@finn111 Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching and your question. First, it depends how tall the Brompton rider is, i.e. what is the height of the saddle. I'm 186cm, so my seatpost is in quite high position. Hence, 45L fits well there. I propose to do like I did, if you can: I asked permission to take my Brompton to the outdoor equipment shop and explained that I want to fit the backpack to my bike, and it was OK for them. Of course I tried first how it fits to my back. Then - to traid fairly - I bought it from that shop, even though the price was a bit higher than from some online-shop. When I compared technical details from Fjallraven's www-pages, there is not much difference. Height in 45L is 68cm and in 35L 65cm. Width is the same in both. Depth in 45L is 30cm while in 35L it's 27cm. I think 3cm difference in height still enables you to fix the backpack to your rear rack and saddle (or seatpost, if you are taller than I). You did not mention if you already have 35L or you are planning to buy one? If you don't have it yet, I recommend 45L for touring. If you have less to take to your tour, you can use the compression straps to keep it tight. But if you need e.g. more clothes for colder weather, it's good to have some extra space. @@finn111 I am also around the same height. Your thorough reply made me decide on the 45. Thanks again and happy riding

Followed your lead and purchased a Fjallraven bagpack (Lappland Firluft 45, however). I am wondering what the best way to keep the hip belt and shoulder straps tucked away the way you had on the video is. Also, what is the best way to fix the bottom straps onto the Brompton rack? Thank you for your time.

Congratulations for your new backpack. Right now I can comment only Abisko, there might be some differences to Lapland. See 2:27 in my video, it shows how the lower straps are looped behind small wheels of the rear rack. To make straps into one package I first tighten the shoulder straps as short as possible . Then I loop chest strap around the web (which is in contact with my back when carrying). For the hip belt are use the same principle: lead the hip strap behind shoulder straps, then pull it and attach it to the other hip belt. I made short video for you kzbin.info/www/bejne/opXKm3qQoNCHmrc and added same link to original video description.
