Do you have to rewaterproof this jacket? Nixwax? Greenland wax?
@beardymanreviews3312 Жыл бұрын
I haven't needed to yet even after a few years, but I think nothing remains totally waterproof for ever so at some point I'll apply some nixwax to it.

hi, nice name for the channel. i am looking for a hard shell but not very keen on getting a typical crickly noisy shell like the mountain equipment lhotse or the arcteryx beta ar. Stumbled upon eco shell and the further research got me here. can i request you for some long term review in terms of 1.waterproofness now, 2. how long can it stay in torrential rain, 3. drying time, 4. frequency of dwr reapplication, 5. do we have to use only flallraven dwr treatment or nikwax/grangers can be used as well. 6. what is your chest size 7. what kind of layering can be done under it in terms of a base layer, light fleece, down jacket as i run cold. thank you and best regards :-)

Looking at the anorak version of this jacket, great to see a review that's more realistic and longer than the usual 90 second overview video some shopping channels fire out. Great stuff 👍

Nice review Fella, and nice channel! Am loving the vids as a fellow Fjallraven Fan (and a sore wallet) .. recently bought the Keb Eco-Shell from Cotswolds for a steal, having to exchange the Large for Medium as the arms are huuge! ... interested to know what your thoughts are on the jacket after use? Cheers.

Just got one...great jacket..except no hand pockets...😡
@beardymanreviews33125 жыл бұрын
Ha, this is true. Massive chest pockets though
@Genetk445 жыл бұрын
Yeah..the chest pockets are great for storing stuff as you mentioned...but useless for warming hands or keeping them dry.....two side hand-pockets would have made this shell perfect.
@dso4 жыл бұрын
There are no hand pockets because this jacket is specifically designed for trekking where you would have a pack on your back with hip belts which would render hand pockets useless.

Thorough review as per usual. How did this hold up for waterproofing? Does it require the DWR reapplying often? I suppose what I'm trying to say is it better than gore-tex or is it not waterproof over prolonged UK downpours, does it wet out? I currently own the Kiapak and Sten jackets which I love but obviously not waterproof (but I knew that before purchase)
@nathanlockhart3876 Жыл бұрын
You’ll have to reapply once or twice per season, maybe less depending on use. That being said, the dwr is cheap and comes in a spray bottle and is pretty easy to reapply.

How you finding this jacket after using for some time ? Looking at this myself for using on Dartmoor, do you find it holds up to serious downpours? Also how’s the breath ability? Currently use a Patagonia torrent shell but is like wearing a bin bag 😂 really sweaty,many thanks 👍

Hi, been using this jacket a lot recently with all the heavy rain we've been having. My previous jacket was a lahoste which i really liked but ive got to be honest and say that my eco shell has been fantastic. Had no water ingress and its really been soaked a couple of time. I run pretty hot and tend to sweat pretty quick but this has not been much of an issue so far. Its expensive but im really impressed with it. Definitely worth a consideration 👍
@offsetsam4 жыл бұрын
Brilliant,thanks for the reply ,there seems to be a few deals online at the moment around the 300 mark ,which compared to the prices for gore tex stuff seems reasonable, I own a skogsko jacket that I use for woodland stuff and love the quality of the fjallraven gear , think I will give the eco shell a go ,thanks again 👍

@@offsetsam Did you end up with a Skogso? I just tried the Kaipak and the size I got was a little snug, I enjoy the full G-1000 but I think something lighter, like the Skogso might be better when I exchange as this will be a Spring Fall and cool summer jacket and I run hot - So if you have the EcoShell, do you think it would be breathable enough compared to Skogso?

How is the jacket holding? I heard it can leak over time or even sooner if the rain is hard. How often do you need to apply DWR? I am trying to decide between this one and Goretex from Arcteryx. I need a gear that won't fail on a 5 day hike with rainy days.
@beardymanreviews33123 жыл бұрын
Its doing ok. Im happily surprised actually as i wasn't too sure if it would prevent leakage when i first got it. I reapply DWR every few months or if its been out in the rain alot. I still really like the look and feel, it has a soft, almost brushed feel. I wear it everywhere as it doesn't have that hardcore, only to be worn in extreme conditions look. Ive seen some reviews where it has failed but mine hasn't let me down.

@@FABM27 I got Zeta for fast and low weight hikes and Keb for harsh stuff & multi day. Keb will serve you well if you know how to look after it. It will protect you really well but you need to be gentle with care - be very careful with washing or you can ruin it.

@@FABM27 I got 2x gtx jackets from arcteryx but Keb is a different beast. It is soooo quiet and very nice to the touch. You don't feel clammy in it and an outer fabric reminds me of a very short suede.

Hard to tell from a video but would this fully fit over the top of a Fjallraven Skogso jacket?
@thegameoflife91794 жыл бұрын
Good review Beardy, I was thinking of this jacket for my next waterproof, however every video I have seen of this jacket the reviewer is constantly pulling it down at the hem, which to me comes across like its too short, and as every outdoors person knows... wearing a waterproof but still getting a wet groin is no fun what so ever... I have the Keb Eco Shell Parka which is longer than this and I would consider the best all around length in a waterproof jacket, however it was very expensive to get hold of new and Fjallraven no longer make it, plus they put some fleece inside it which increased its weight and packability hence me looking at this as a lighter weight alternative for carrying.... however I think the short length is putting me off

7 Minutes into the video, your shoulders already show patches where the water broke in. Still have to find a review that is about it’s performance as a waterproof jacket. I had 3 (!) sets of Keb Eco Shell jackets and trouser, and all of them were taken back by Fjall Raven because they clearly weren’t performing as they should.
@dso4 жыл бұрын
The wet patches you describe do NOT show that the "water broke in" - rather they show that the DWR treatment needs to be revitalized as it has lost the ability to help the water bead up on the surface of the jacket. The Keb Eco-Shell has a water column rating of 30,000. It is for all intents and purposes completely waterproof. The jacket might "wet out" on the surface, but no water will penetrate the jacket and hence you will stay dry.
@FABM273 жыл бұрын
@@dso you will stay dry until you are only doing some light activity. Intense activity means you will sweat and then you could be wet from the inside!

Hi there - I am 185 pounds and 6 feet tall - I wear a medium in the Fjallraven Barents Parka - Do you suggest medium in this coat as well? and do you think it will be good for travelling does it pack small? I will be spending most of my time in Asia and the weather changes quickly I need something durable and travel friendly. Thanks!

It is extremely humid in most places in Asia. An Umbrella or a Pocho works best in Asia as long as its not cold and windy!

I have had this jacket nearly 2 years now. THIS JACKET IS NOT WATERPROOF!. Like all similar jackets, It requires reimpregnating after each wash. Without the "Fjäll Räven PFC-Free Eco DWR impregnation" this is just a not well breathing softshell. That being said, I love this jacket, and when properly taken care of it can protect you from everything.
@dso4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure about that? It has a water column rating of 30,000. It is for all intents and purposes completely waterproof. You're probably talking about how the surface "wets out" due to the DWR treatment needing to be reapplied. That doesn't make the jacket NOT waterproof. It is still waterproof regardless of whether the outer surface wets out.
@JamesLebowski3 жыл бұрын
@@dso Yeah, the face fabric not beading water off anymore but getting wet happens with 3 layer Goretex Pro too and that's usually considered the prime waterproof material for these jackets (partially justified, partially great marketing and brand power ;D). Eco-Shell seems easily as good and the PFC Free DWR treatment wearing off is a fine trade-off for using a DWR that is far less toxic.
@Tomal4lo6 жыл бұрын
I purchased it few days ago at Cotswold. Great for city cycling in wet conditions. I will test it on a 20 mile hike this Sunday with some medium rain. Very comfy and you don't feel any restriction.
