Looks like a great jacket, Durable and extremely versatile. At first I had imagined it being good for use during the fall/spring. I didn't realize it could be used as an outer shell during the winter and because of the ventilation, in the summer too. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

I think that echo shell with a G1000 jacket underneath will keep me warm up to about minus 10 or so Celsius on a day with some added wind chill. The echo shell trousers are warmer than the echo shell top. They are considerably warm. Add a backpack and it will very noticeably help you to stay warm some more but it isn't the best choice of cold winter outfit. There is nothing better for rain other than having a gore tex raincoat in your pack but if you walk too much with that type of coat on than your own body sweat due to trapped heat will get you wet plus you will also stink. If it is a crazy down pore than get out of the rain, a lighter rain and you can walk right through it with echo shell, plus both layers breath through and dry easily.

Hi Ted, I purchased the Keb Eco-Shell jacket in november, and so far I realy like it. I wear it 7 days / 7, to go to work (I live in Quebec City), to shovel, to snowshoe, to run when it's -30C with the wind, etc.... The only concern is that I'm not sure it is very durable (like, let's say the Patagonia Triolet). I wander if the jacket will still be waterproof in 6-7 years ?? And a other question : do you apply the DWR very ofter (what frequency) ? Finally, congratulation for your videos, I really like it !!!
@TedWeirum5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks! I wear mine pretty much every day too, so far I haven’t done anything to it and it still works out just fine. I find it durable, I’ll see if I can do a comparison video between this one and the Bergtagen shell jacket! Thanks for watching!

@@TedWeirum So, as I understand, you did not put the DWR on your jacket yet ? On my part, after 2-3 months, water don't "roll" on the jacket anymore and seems to be adsorbed by the outer layer. Is it normal ??

Would you recommend eco-shell over G-1000? Ive recently converted from goretex to G-1000 as Im doing more camping and bushcraft rather than hiking and mountain walking, but my Sten jacket has kept me adequately dry in rain and snow so wondering is its necessary to buy an eco-shell jacket, which is basically like a goretex jacket..also, Is eco-shell as as durable as G-1000? Cheers

If you are looking at buying something new I would go with ecoshell but since you have the g-1000 Sten jacket I would stick with that until you are knowingly going in to rainy weather camping, then I would consider buying the ecoshell. Hi Ted. Thanks for getting back to me. I am looking for an all round year round jacket. Living in Denmark there are not that many challenges when it comes to climate or terrain. When i go hiking it is Sweden ( Abisko, Fjällraven Classic) and Norway - mostly in the spring and summer time. Come March 2018 my wife and i will be sailing with "Hurtigruten" from Bergen to Kirkenes and some of the activities we have planned are dogsleding and riding snowmobiles. To me, it looks like the Bergtagen jacket has a few more details then the Keb jacket ? I plan on buying the shell pants as well but have no problem combining Keb pants and Bergtagen jacket - or they other way around if that is the best solution.

@MacGyv3r6 жыл бұрын
I've tried this jacket several of times in stores, and the overall feel and design of the Keb is very good. I like the softness of the fabric and it feels more comfortable than comparable jackets with Goretex and similar membranes. The only thing stopping me from bying it, is the lack of handvarmer pockets. Fjällräven's take to this, is that it's supposedly more comfortable when wearing a climbing harness, without the lower handwarmer pockets. But how often does someone wear a climbing harness? They could just have placed the pockets high like everyone else have done. I would have bought the jacket first time i tried it, if just Fjällräven havent made the bad decision of no handwarmer pockets.
@TedWeirum6 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for your comment! I think another reason for the lack of pockets in the lower part of the jackets is also because of the hip belt on most backpacks would get in the way!
@MacGyv3r6 жыл бұрын
Hey. Yes, same reason as the climbing harness. I just don't get why Fjällräven thought it was more important to completely remove the pockets, rather than just place them higher up on the jacket. It works fine with other jackets, which are made for hiking, climbing etc. They should have offered the jacket in two versions. One without the pockets, and one with pockets. I'm pretty sure a Keb with handwarmer pockets would sell a lot more than one without. So, note to Fjällräven: Please add pockets, thanks in advance
@StefOutside6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I actually prefer the fact that the jacket doesn't have lower pockets. I do a lot of canoe trips and having to swap gear in and out of the lower pockets every time I get out for a portage and put my pack on... Well, I'd end up not using the pockets anyways. In fact, I rarely even use the chest pockets on this thing on canoe trips because my PFD is over top. In the winter, it would be nice to have some pockets there but it would add bulk, weight, and warmth to the jacket in the warmer months and I wouldn't want that trade-off personally. Additionally, the jacket is quite light and flexible so any items held in those pockets wouldn't have much support and would end up moving around a lot when active. Furthermore, the placement and adjustability of the core vents allow me to access the pockets of my mid-layer underneath if I ever need to warm my hands, or if I don't have pockets on the midlayer, to just keep my hands next to my body... But most of the time I'll have gloves with me to throw on anyways. So with that feature I think it essentially eliminates any use I have for lower pockets. I get your thought process for sure; it'd be nice to have for when you don't have a pack/harness on, especially if the pocket was made of mesh for additional venting options, but I think that the activities this jacket is meant for... Most people wouldn't end up using them and they'd be wasted. Cheers bud, I hope you find your perfect jacket! There are a lot of great options out there, so don't compromise if that is a key feature that you want!
@StefOutside6 жыл бұрын
Actually, I forgot to mention, there is another version of this jacket for colder weather: the "Keb Eco-Shell Parka" that has many of the same features, with the addition of some top loaded bellows pockets by the waist that have openings at the side to warm your hands. It also seems to be longer, have a light mesh lining in the core area, and a detachable synthetic fur section on the hood... However I don't own the jacket so you may want to see it in person if it fits your needs. Good luck!

The last time I followed FjallRavens size chart instructions, it was way too big:/ I have a FjallRaven Anorak #8 coming in the mail, but I might send it right back for this eco shell. I'll be hiking 5 - 10kms on some days, exposed to heavy snow fall or slight rain on other days, more than half the time driving area to area with a bit of hiking in between on the mean terrains of NorthWestern BC mountains.

Hi Ted! I have a question. I recently bought the Eco Shell jacket and I am so happy with it. Last week I also found the Keb Jacket, with the stretch parts & G1000 weave, on sale. Now to my question? Do you think having both these jackets serves any puropse, or is it really any point in having both? The Keb Eco is lighter, and waterproof. The Keb jacket is heavier, not waterproof. Maybe it breathes better, but you have loads of ventilation on the Eco shell, pit sips and two way front zipper. Do you think it´s worth it having both jackets?

About the Eco shell, this jacket is hands down the best shell on the market when it comes to performance and comfort. I was debating between the Eco shell and arc'teryx Theta AR. The Fjallraven was a much sturdier build and didn't sound like I was walking around in a plastic wrapper. With the money saved, I also purchased the Eco shell pants and I use the duo all year round in Canada by adjusting my base and mid layer, if necessary. The sticker shock was concerning, but as mentioned, if you're going to explore; the gear needs to perform! Fjallraven gear will never let you down. Looking forward to many more videos!

I can absolutely recommend Carinthia (Austrian Jagdkommando, UK Royal Marines, NED SOF and many more armies and units trust their stuff) and of course Fjällräven is a superb brand. It's always a question of resources you want or can spend and with a regular pricetag of €650,- for me its a bit too much, as my girl and I also bought a T6 Beach in 2016, bought a new appartement this year and we got parents since a few weeks. So, actually money is running through the hands ATM... 😉 Carinthia is very attractive for me, as I am part of the Austrian Army Reserves and I do missions abroad from time to time. There we get the stuff for a reduced price + tax free. Good vibes and good channel! Keep the Cali rollin'!

30 000mm vs. Gor-Tex?! Can someone explain
@TedWeirum5 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference is the way they’re made, eco shell is more environmental friendly I’d say
@driftertravels9285 жыл бұрын
If you look at the figures available online, Ecoshell is more or less on par with Goretex Pro, which is the top of the line Goretex product, usually found in Arcteryx jackets, in terms of waterproofness and breathability. But as Ted said, Ecoshell is environmentally friendly whereas Goretex is toxic to produce and uses toxic chemicals to provide its DWR. In fact, Greenpeace and many environmental groups have asked people not to buy Goretex. The one area where Goretex is better is durability, because Ecoshell uses recycled polyester as its face fabric, I don’t think it will be as durable as its rivals that use nylon for their face fabric, including Goretex.
@solaufein13745 жыл бұрын

Big fan of Ted, but objectively no jacket is worth this price tag. You can get 95% the value for $150-200. Less than half the price. And if you're an outdoorsy person it's better to buy a jacket that will be worn to hell and then buy a new one then to spend half a grand on a jacket. Especially since this Jacket is a generalist jacket, not specialized for heavy winter nor hot climates. So plenty of cheaper options exist. Will you sacrifice one or two features, totally, but it will pay off better in long run I think.
