Thanks mate! Took my 2005 FJR apart twice. The first time I tried to clean the original starter (which I must've messed up to my dismay). Second time with a $75 eBay starter. Seems to have solved my issue of slow hot starts (I also bought a battery just in case but looks like I won't need it). Took me about 2.5-3 hours to do. FYI to others doing this: You don't have to disconnect the coolant lines to access the bolts on the starter. Might have to remove the throttle cables from the guide and the idle set screw line to move the whole throttle rack over though. Thanks again! (Do you have a Paypal Springbok? I'd like to send ya $10 for lunch if ya want it. Probably would have taken it to the shop if not for your video)

Thanks so much mate. It amazes why they hide things like they do when they will need maintenance at some stage.
@superbullytje Жыл бұрын
They don't "hide stuff". The starter has to come in that position due to engine design and then of course they have to design the other stuff around it. Its unavoidable due to the need to fit everything in on a motorcycle. Sure they design in better accessibility on consumables where they can (air filter is pretty easy to get to etc) but a starter motor is not changed very often hence why it is where it is ;)

I'm having the same issue. Looking at just dismantling the starter to see the condition and hope it only needs cleaning or worst case scenario new brushes for $100, they want $350 for OEM starter here in Canada. How hard was it to reinstall the throttle body to the main motor and the air box back to the throttle body? Looks like it may be a pain to try to put the joint clamps back on! Thank you for this BTW!😁 UPDATE! Just finished taking the starter out, testing with a volt meter, cleaning it thoroughly, checking the brushes, within speck, did not need a rebuild. Put everything back together, let it idle until fan kicked on. Turned it off and back on 3 times while fan was on, NO ISSUES so far. Couldn't take it out for a ride due to heavy rain today. I hope this solved the hard start up when hot problem! I was starting to avoid trips which required a couple stops in case it wouldn't start. Took a whole afternoon. To make things easier when reinstalling the throttle body, dip you finger in engine oil and just put a slight coating on the inside the rubber throttle body joint where it will slide on the engine. It will help a lot!

Never Heard of DB Electrical but looks like a good source for a rebuilt starter at a very reasonable price. My '05 did the same as yours but a new battery fixed that. However, I do see replacing the starter in the future and now I have a source besides new/OEM for $300++. Thanks!

Thank you for a great video, I presume that the starter is a Chinese aftermarket brand which I’m thinking of buying one now, but I thought I’d ask someone who bought one and used it. How is it? Still functioning as it should? Is it worth buying? Grateful for your help. Best regards
@springbokstrydom90314 жыл бұрын
My advice, buy OEM instead. I’m learning now that these starters fail after a season
