Just as an honorable mention: you kind of covered it, but I think I would say putting a rep or two into characters helps you deal with their offence. Making that character your main for a while has some pretty solid advantages. You learn their moveset, and what moves they want to be doing as well as get to see how people try and counter it. You don't necessarily have to go chat on forums about it, you can play - let's just say goki - and watch how people react to your attacks and mixup. If something is hard for you to deal with (in goki's case, a fast bash) then you can usually assume others also have a hard time, which can be applied to your offence against said character.

I would also advise that if you face an opponent you seemingly can’t get a read on, try to get yourself into the mindset that “There is a pattern this player has that I have not found yet” instead of “ This player is completely unpredictable and random”. The former mindset should give your mind a sense of ease knowing there is a solution to dealing with your opponent than the latter.

*Cant hear you over my 3 tabbed anime battle songs and my strategy of wildly slapping with lights* -A console Orochi/Kensei
@resspawn264 жыл бұрын
"Up until the certain skill level, you can just press the light attack repeatedly. Then, all of the sudden, you face the players that shut you down completely, meaning, you need to change your whole approach to the game." - although said with different intention, this pretty much sums up the whole problem players keep arguing about since the CCU. Think about it. You cannot properly play and enjoy this game if you don't have high enough skill to block. Before CCU, this wasn't a big problem since most players were able to do it without excessive training. 10-15 reps and you're good to go, now start to learn other aspects of the game if you want to become a Decent player. But now you have to put a lot of work to just get pass the bare minimum. Lets say you know about frame adv and can use it effectively. That means that unless the opponent have any form of dodge attack (or full-block), you can continuously attack and kill any player with little to no effort until they are skilled enough to block (or even better, parry) lights. Basically, this means that before you'll be able to play and enjoy the actual read-based game, both you and your opponent must first train hard enough to get a good Reaction. If you don't have it, you'll be beaten as soon as enemy applies lightspam, which feels unfair and frustrating. If your opponents don't have it, you'll be able to beat anyone as soon as you apply lightspam, which feels unfair and boring. Overall, I'm trying to say that currently, the game is Reaction-based first and Read-based second, now even more than before, that is why people complain and that is why so many people stopped playing.
@littleman13304 жыл бұрын
Well of course :D I used to be able to parry Shaman's light after heavy or zone and now I can't even block normal lights ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@cormoranoimperatore84133 жыл бұрын
I thought the whole point of it was to make lights not a free parry, they are supposed to be unreactable or at least very hardly reactable. You don’t need to necessarily react to them, you can also guess the direction they are coming from, dodge on prediction of light to avoid them, if one gets through you can dodge if you think another light is coming. Lights are now viable openers and not a free parry, although they will be punished if used too much, this makes turtling unconvenient and brings the game towards a more offensive direction, which is good. Yeah getting hit by lights is frustrating, especially with how much Ubi is sparing on the animations of new heroes, and I can’t parry or block them as much as I did before. However, this makes the game more healthy and it’s almost impossible that it will always be your opponent’s turn to attack, therefore allowing you to use your own offense, if you try to turtle you will be punished, that’s how that works. What I really think the game needs is to modernize its tutorials to reflect its actual condition and to inform and instruct the new players on all the tools and core mechanics they can use.
@michaeldanchez95303 жыл бұрын
@@cormoranoimperatore8413 with certain characters (gryffin👀) they finish up their “turn” so you get frame advantage but then they just dodge heavy back into their combo every time you get the frame advantage. So a lot of times you wind up just standing there trying to bait them out while they lightspam and dodge spam you and it’s just a weird awkward guessing game that you wind up losing. I’m not a fan of that.

one of the biggest reads I inadvertently give people is my use is Centurion's charge heavy. i played ranked a fair bit (mostly for rewards) and everytime it's just a free parry for them. bad habits die hard

A friend of mine complained about Gladiator's skewer. I said that Gladiator's skewer should have Hyper Armor to prevent lights completely shutting down the mixup. They complained about how "Op" the skewer is. Remarking "It's just like Shugoki's hug." "Yes, it is. Except Shugoki's hug is easily countered. You know this same problem is with ANY character with an unblockable, right?" "Bruh you're small brain Shugoki is OP."

Usually my approach to making reads is not nearly as sophisticated or perhaps soundproof as yours. My approach usually involves observing what moves my opponent favors, then adjusting accordingly. I am aware that if they decide to change tactics, I'm kinda screwed. But, the instances where they don't adapt, I outplay them completely.

Hmmmm I wonder which direction this orochi will throw is unreactable light or unreactable dash heavy (console player, wouldn't have complained before the CCU)
@tank197684 жыл бұрын
1. Orochi's dash heavy isn't even unreactable. 2. The direction people throw their attacks is almost always patterned, especially lights because they have less time to consciously choose. 3. Even if you make a wrong read for light direction, you have a 1 in 3 chance of parrying by pure chance. All light parry punishes in the game do more than the damage of 2 Orochi lights so you'll come out ahead even if you parry randomly as long as all they're doing is light spamming. The fact you're complaining about Orochi of all characters proves you need to think about this more.
@theroguenob4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I had a player say I was light spamming cause he never fainted and his lights were easy to read so I just crushing countered him to death.

I just wish there was a way for me to easily grasp how to read and use everything at my disposal to it's fullest potential in For Honour. I'm autistic, and I can understand things and how to do them way better than everyone else as a result of it, but that's only once it sort of _clicks_ with me, like something puts it into perspective and it all makes sense. I've been trying for ages to adapt to this new style of For Honour because I love the game and it was so much fun, but I just haven't been able to make any sense of it and no matter how many videos I watch on it, I just can't understand it. I'd prefer For Honour if it was partly read based and partly reaction based.

Here’s a tip, if you can’t read their mind read their pattern, and find his comfort. I do a thing I call point prediction, instead of predicting and entire combo I predict the first move, say a War momma likes light, light, bash. Most likely I will get hit by the first light and that’s okay as long as I get the second.

My main problem is not knowing if their going to let it fly or feint it to gb. So when i think their gonna let it fly, i either dodge attack or parry it but that ends up being a gb. And when i think their gonna feint it to gb, they let it fly.

The way I see it, there are two types of reads: character reads and player reads. Character reads come from your knowledge of a character's kit. Character reads are the base level of reads that don't change (unless a character is reworked) and is learned through playing the game. Character reads are the *potential* moves that a character may do. Player reads, on the other hand, are made against every opponent you play against in the moment. This is recognizing the patterns that an opponent makes. Player reads take the potential moves and narrows it down to what is *likely* to be used. Think of it like this: character reads teach you that moves X, Y, and Z may be thrown, and player reads teach you that your current opponent often throws Z and sometimes X. To an experienced player who knows the character, they would be prepared for X, Y, or Z when the fight begins. They would then notice their opponent's attack pattern and be able to predict and counter it every time it occurs forcing the opponent to either switch it up or get destroyed. For an inexperienced player who isn't familiar with every character's moveset, they wouldn't know that X, Y, or Z exists until they encounter them during their fight. They could then still recognize and counter the opponent's patterns of X and Z, but as soon as the opponent switches it up and throws Y, the player will have no idea what's coming. TLDR, character reads are all the potential attacks and mix-ups that character's have in their moveset, and player reads are the attacks that are likey to happen based on the opponent's attack patterns. Character reading is a base understanding that is learned through playing the game over time while player reading is done in every engagement and can be done by anybody, but player reading without character reading has its own disadvantages when the opponent starts switching things up.

If you guys think reads dont exist its simply not true. If I say kensei many of you immediately expect side dodging. Or always blocking top when you are distant from a warden. These are very simple examples of how we all use reads. The key to getting better is learning how to utilize them

i used to play tekken and was in the mid to high ranks. i quit after that cause there is no way i had the time and energy to battle the folks up there. what i took with me are setting up baits and using the arena as your advantage. for honor especially gives you alot of arenas to fight on that can give you the edge over the other. and btw you just know how people play with certain chracters. fun story: i fought someone who was a complete newbeginner. he outclassed me easily cause i disnt know if he was serious about his playstyle or just joking around. he beat me almost each time. side light into side light with bp. who does that. lol

I'm struggling when people get into their offence. You talking about using a heavy feint to gauge their defensive preference, what would you recommend doing to understand their offensive play style? Should I just block and dodge when I have to... or is it better to go for a counter attack to start off, and adapt if I'm unsuccessful?

My issue with all of this is, I can't think fast enough to make critical decisions such as the raider ledge scenario, and I can't learn fast enough to notice patterns unless they're a literal potato, on top of the fact that I forget faster than I learn so for me, reads are always a guess.

I had reads before the update... now I can’t do it at all... I wanted to watch to see if this could help me, after 2 months of trying this, it still doesn’t feel satisfying or fun. I’m much more of a guy who plays on reaction rather than relying on prediction so now the game constantly feels against me. At least before the update I could still do both with some balance. Not now? No...
