The Nasiriyah massacre is one of the most tragic events of the Iraq war, which took place on November 12, 2003. During this massacre, a tanker loaded with explosives was detonated in front of the headquarters of the Italian Carabinieri Multinational Specialized Unit (Italiana Carabinieri Operative Unit Special Multinational or N.O.M.U.S.), located in the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah.
The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber affiliated with the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, and caused the death of 19 Italian soldiers, an Italian secret service agent and 9 Iraqi soldiers. Many other people were injured in the explosion. This attack was one of the deadliest suffered by Italian forces during their participation in the Iraq War, which was part of an international coalition led by the United States.
The Nasiriyah massacre had a significant impact on Italian public opinion and sparked a strong political debate in the country regarding Italy's participation in the Iraq war. The event was a time of national mourning and led to an in-depth discussion on Italian foreign policy and the involvement of Italian troops in conflict zones.
The Nasiriyah massacre remains a dark chapter in the history of contemporary Italy and a painful memory for the families of the victims and for the country as a whole.
