Alot of the detail of FFXIV base story is built upon that of the City-States, the their flags and standards represent that story.

I still think the Garlean standard is a sneaky reference to Rejoining. Two dark, broken links meeting in the centre in vivid red, finally whole

Fantastic video as always! I actually didn't remember about the Kugane flag being that of the Mitsurugi clan flag. I'm sure I read it somewhere at some point, but it's always fun to relearn stuff.
