I think a lot of people miss the point of the Cerberus themes. 3's theme is a slow, big, chained up *literal gatekeeper*, while 5's theme is a rabid dog, free from its chain ravenously chasing and mauling you all across the arena at a frantic pace. As much as I got a little hard when 3's theme was teased at the beginning of 5's boss fight it wouldn't work for such a fast-paced fight. In fact, the closest boss to 3's Cerberus mechanically and soniclly is Goliath, if you think about it.

I feel like Cerbeus is the best boss in the game. His theme is awesome, both his and Dantes lines are memorable, and he is the first boss. You don't have any devils arms, you have starting health, no style level ups, and probably only stinger or drive as a new attack. Not to mention his only weakness is Angi and Rudra so you have to play the game a second time just for that.

I like to think the lyrics of Cerberus' theme are referring to how Dante in the chance of succeeding to beat them (which he does of course) and enters thr Temenigru, everything will (and does) change forever for his life. Sure, he lost his mother and brother and some friends along the way by then. However, this was a new big event that would bring us the character he is in DMC1. It also kinda works on the player too, because after you reach and beat Cerberus, everything gets real.

Playing this game, dealing with the inflated difficulty of "normal" mode, going thru all the way to DMD mode, this is why when i finally got around to playing Dark Souls I was like "is this it? I remember fighting Cerberus for the first time and I thought it was pretty sick. This track during the fight is intense, gritty, and sinister. It really makes the fight better because of it imo. I died a few times but man did it get me going. I really hope DMC5 can have moments like this.

I like to think of this fight more as a gate of passage more than a boss fight. Unlike the first boss which was the generic big reaper monster, this fight actually makes you get good. It makes you rethink about what will come ahead and if you can’t pass this boss even on easy mode, then sorry that you wasted your money. I love DMC because mashing is never a truly viable tactic. Whenever you die, you get closer and closer to victory and until you finally defeat the boss. But not only are the bosses a fun challenge, but they are also well designed. The devs made sure to make the enemy telegraphs clear so you don’t have to do some trial and error bullshit. If I got a PS4 for one game, DMC5 would be a must buy. Well done capcom, well done.

Fun Fact: Cerberus is, as per canonical continuity, Dante's first Devil Arm besides the Rebellion. It also turns out that he regularly converses with Cerberus' soul during his free time in missions, and he became somewhat close comrades until Cerberus sacrificed himself to destroy the shard of Yamato that was in Balrog's possession and make him submit to Dante...

When I first heard this and Beowulf's theme, I assumed the lyrics were from their perspective, but after thinking about it some more I think it's Dante talking to both of them. All of the other lyrical tracks in the game are from Dante's perspective, and the lyrics in Beowulf's theme and Cerberus' theme are the same, so I'd find it strange if these two random bosses are the only ones with lyrics, and they both match. On top of that, "I'll defeat and discreet your every move" and "killing slow is the way I conquer" make a lot more sense from Dante's perspective than from the bosses. If you mess up, the bosses can kill you pretty damn fast, and most the time they kinda just let you hit them. Dante on the other hand, has to learn the opponents every single move, and it takes quite a long time for him to kill bosses. It feels more accurate that these lyrics come from a Dante who knows the opponents every move and how to get around it, and is just slowly whittling them down, than it does coming from these massive beasts who can just tank your moves and obliterate your health bar.

King Cerberus' music has the exact same mistake that Dante's battle theme got (the one EVERYONE hated) and it is simply that it just doesn't fit, especially since the DMC1 trio actually got remixes of their OWN music but King Cerb didn't get a better version of the OG Cerb theme and ended up with something that you may hear on a nightclub.

The funniest thing is that once you pay attention to the lyrics you realize that Cerberus isn't talking. It's Dante. "Killing slow is the way I conquer" sums up his way of fighting in a nutshell. Vergil is all about optimization and killing quick. Some people wonder if Dante is weaker because of how many more hits it takes to kill his opponent... and then you have ROYAL GUARD which just nukes opponents as needed. Dante looks at demons like bugs to de-limb bit by bit.

Interesting interpretation. I've always looked at this and other DMC songs as half Evil/Demons talking and half Dante's inner struggles. This song for instance, I've always felt was about how Dante is technically struggling/suffering at the beginning of 3, and he's on his first steps toward his true self. I also see this song as an allegory for depression and loneliness, which Dante probably has given his childhood. The evil/demons/Cerberus are mocking Dante, because they can see that underneath his taunts and over the top exterior he's scared and alone.

@@tdvdude439 thats the beauty of this song: You can interpret it both ways as the lyrics can be interpreted from either cerberus's point of view: mocking and toying with Dante or you can see it as Dante finding his first "true" victim in his almost torturous fighting style i havent paid too much attention to the lyrics of the other battle themes but i believe (and take this with a handful of Himalayan rock salt because im not the best source for this) the double sided aspect applies to taste the blood and divine hate which is what makes the battle themes in DMC3 so great
