This film from 1954 instructs the viewer on cutting steel and iron plates. A teacher and a student demonstrate the process of preparing the plates, adjusting the pressure of the tanks of oxygen and acetylene used in the blowpipe cutting tool, meeting safety standards, and how to properly cut different shapes in the metal. The film is produced by Linde Air Products Company, as a Division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation (UCC).
“Flame-cutting” title banner (00:14). A worker is cutting plates of iron and steel using oxy-acetylene flame cutting (00:34). He cleans a steel plate with a wire brush (01:28). His student measures and marks the line of cut with a piece of soapstone (01:33), before using a prick punch-tool and a hammer to make indents along the line (01:40). The teacher demonstrates the technique of holding the blowpipe for a straight cut (01:46), and the student makes his attempt (02:33). He opens the tanks of oxygen and acetylene while adjusting the pressure (02:49). The teacher instructs his student to roll his sleeves down, button his collar, and to wear gloves and safety goggles (03:05). The blowpipe is lit and adjusted (03:24). An animation illustrates the process of cutting the steel plate (03:43). The student cuts the plate (04:06). An animation illustrates the mistake of moving the blowpipe too fast, followed by the solution (05:02). A demonstration of how to make a smooth cut by correctly distancing the blowpipe from the plate (05:40). The student practices cutting a longer stretch of metal (06:16). A demonstration of how to cut non-straight lines and shapes (06:32). The student attempts beveling (07:09), circular cut (08:22), and a cut away from the edges of the plate (08:35). An animation illustrates the process (08:43). The process from start to finish I reviewed, starting with cleaning the plate with a wire brush (09:41), the marking of the line with soapstone and a punch-tool (09:46), followed by the selection of the nozzle for the blowpipe (09:52) and setting the pressure for the tanks of oxygen and acetylene (09:59), and finally meeting safety standards (10:05) before beginning the process of cutting the metal plates (10:11). “The End” (11:30).

A decade ago I was involved with a company based out of Detroit to tear down and or scrap heavy stamping machinery at an old GM truck and bus factory in Indianapolis. We used propane and oxygen to cut through 4 inch thick steel. The scrapping company had a truck with acetylene and oxygen. I kid you not, the cutting head was as big as a damn pop can. Would blast through 6 inches of plate steel like it's butter.

We used propane and oxygen at school, I'm guessing because it is a little "greener". The only difference between that and acetylene is that it doesn't burn as hot and takes a little longer. I've never seen a torch that big, but I really liked using the Air-Arc to cut up a chunk of scrap steel the size of an engine block!

They really knew how to make educational films back then. It's difficult to find this kind of quality any more. We have so many tools and resources to teach, demonstrate, and explain but these are still some of the best productions I've ever had the pleasure of learning from.

Great stuff. I've been in industrial maintenance settings from bottling plants to steel mills to construction sites for huge new plants. I've been working with Oxy-Actl since 2005. It's scary seeing how many people have no clue what they're doing, much less how to safely transport and store away their tank setups.

It's amazing how efficient oxy acetylene cutting is. I've seen scrapping crews use cutting heads that looked as big as a damn pop can. They'd cut up a big German made Schuler stamping press in no time. I've seen it. Lol

I have been and am about through being a structural welder and every time I say "torch glasses" I get those stupid dark safety glasses that are useless as safety glasses and even worse for cutting. I can't count on your hands and mine how many blind old fitters I've seen using those. Somehow they can still read a tape most of the time, though.

There was a bad accident on a Navy ship in San Diego back in 2007. A welder returned from lunch, working a tank, struck an arc and caused an explosion, injuring himself and 3 other workers. So now the requirement aboard all ships is 1/2 hr cool down period, roll back all leads and turn off the gas and welding machines. The worst part is that the safety guy told them to get proper mechanical ventilation and the supervisor fired him for arguing with him!

With both a real torch and a plasma you can tell if it's cutting as fast as it's moving by whether the stream is shooting out straight or almost straight

The title on this film is wrong. Perhaps it could be edited? It should be "Linde Air", not "Line Air" as it currently says.
