I like the Stugs as my ambush choice as well. Great in that they can't be pinned down like my Pak-40s. I was wondering if you could share where you bought the gaming mat you use?

Ah, my favorite German AFV. I'm a grenadier player and these are my AFVs of choice. Nice price, reasonably well protected, and a solid gun. But man, I want a proper Heer STUG.
@danielneal2644 жыл бұрын
I mean, we have the Heer Stugs in Fortress Europe and they are same cost, right? Even in MW Stugs were rated Fearless/Vet/Careful. Agree that Bagration might give us a downgrade option - D-Day 9th and 116th don't work for Stugs, only tanks.

I thinking about the 1352nd. I would think that it would be cheaper than the Fortress Europe STUG. But who knows.

Great overview John. I really enjoyed it. I’m definitely putting three in my German D Day army. How can I not? They are so pretty.

Are you going to do one on the stuh platoon option? My favorite combo is hq 2x, stug 3x, stuh 4x.
@danielneal2644 жыл бұрын
The "common foe" that basically breaks the Stug is the D-Day Churchill. For almost the same price as the Stug, it brings FA9/SA8/TA2/AT10/FP3, with option to swap one team to AT11/FP4 at no cost. These Churchills also have a cross rating of 2+ and Counterattack on 3+, vastly superior to the Stug's 4+ and 5+ rating, respectively. These things are just beasts and a Stug is just worse at basically everything for the same points cost. Stugs are reasonably good against Americans and current state Soviets, though the upcoming IS-2 is going to bury them similar to how the D-Day Churchill does. 3 IS-2 for 22 points. FA10/SA8/TA2/AT14/FP2 with 3+ Counterattack and Veteran skill.

StuGs are great for ambush. And unlike the PaK 38 or 40's for ambush, their MGs can hold off enemy infantry assaults & they can always 'move out' (albeit making their cross checks) if necessary. In LW, a better defensive than offensive weapon.

Great breakdown of the unit! Been slowly buying everything for a Fallschirmjager army over the spring and summer and I finally got everything in the formation acquired. Not the biggest fan of the new infantry plastics but I am looking forward to building and playing the army. I did pick up one Fallschirmjager STuG box set, not sure I'll do the whole company. What else would you consider essential for Fallschirmjager support?

Side question, what paints did you use for the camo?
@robertshields15364 жыл бұрын
I noticed that you have two different gun mantlets. The FJ Stug box has the square one. Did they use both since I have some painted up already with the more rounded mantlet? I'm not being a stickler, I'm having to replace some of those guns since they are broken off and I have the option to go either way, and it would save me a little time to use the rounded ones. Thanks.

Hi Robert, First I want to say I'm about as far away from a Stug expert as you can get. I want to say my models are over 10 years old and are the old resin ones. I think the box sets came with a option. The meaning of the rounded vs square I have no idea. I just did both the have some variety. Maybe at some point one platoon was going to be rounded and the other square? to be honest I'm not sure what my original thinking was back then. But then again at this time during the war I'm sure the Germans used whatever they could get their hands on so mix matching should be okay.

@@robertshields1536 I might be able to help you out here. 'Gun Mantle; After the basic frontal armour of all the Sturmgeschutze had been increased to 80mm thickness, the one remaining weak point was the gun mantle. The thickness of the welded gun mantle armour varied between 45 and 50mm. Beginning Novermber 1943, a cast gun mantle was introduced which was called the Saukopfblende (sow's head mantle) by the troops. This cast mantle was also introduced for the 10.5cm Sturmhaubitze (105mm howitzer). Due to the difficulty in producing large castings, an insufficient number were produced to outfit all of the new Sturmgeschutz. Therefore many Sturmgeschutz were still produced to the end of the war, still originally outfitted with welded gun mantles.' [Source; Speilberger, Walter, Sturmgeschutz and its Variants, Schiffer Military, Atglen PA, 1993, Page 105] Also note; my book does not mention how thick the new 'saukopf' mantle was...at least not at page 105. I'll have to read this reference book again to see if the 'saukopf' mantle thickness is given elsewhere. Speilberger is considered one of the 'big guns' in AFV subjects, particularly WW2, but he is not perfect. You might be interested in this little snippet of info to, Jon, even if I am two years too late. @All Minatures Great and Small.

New player here… I thought you get a free rotate to face that doesn’t count as movement at beginning of shooting phase? V4 rule book, p 55
@AllMiniaturesGreatandSmall3 жыл бұрын
True, but you can only rotate to face a legal target. since the Stug Gun has the forward firing rule if a tank slips behind you you can't rotate to shoot it in the shooting step. You would have to drive there in the movement step(or risk a Blitz)
