@@lazylankI bet Hubie committed to the rebuild/tank as much as everybody else on day 1. There is no world where his talent doesn't exceed 55 pts without trying or not trying to do so. I'm sure they knew Tanev, Zadorv, Markstrm, & maybe Lindhol would be dealt before this upcoming season. If he tries even remotely this yr, 70-75 pts should be attainable on the Top 6. I agree though if you put Guentzel alongside a truly elite player he can be worth 8-9M. I'd kind of like the Canucks to bring back Zadorov and get Taffoli instead of Guentzel, especially with the indications that things could get a bit nuts on the signing price. I'm also wondering if Millstein (the Canucks other "assistant GM") had any part in moving Mikheyev to Chicago and whether there was an understanding of that leading to signing Zadorov.

Idk if it was clear enough, but i meant that it looked deadly if we were 2 or 3 seasons ago. But anyways, with the rest of your comment im assuming you are one of the “rebuilds are everything” crowd, rebuilds are far from being a 100% successful process, once you go in that direction your team might be stuck in it for decades. You have to run it back when you got a Star of Ovechkin, Crosby or Datsyuk caliber in your line up, and thinking it’s for them individually is a mistake, these kind of players have become indistinguishable from your franchise through the years, this second that they slow down, it isnt worth it anymore mentality is very NHL whatever year EA sports game like. What reason do Washington fans have to show up without Ovechkin doing Ovechkin things, without a shot at the playoff and a team showing they are trying to make it ? None … and don’t forget this whole show is profit driven. In a rebuild scenario, it’s sell everything not young and cheap, be stuck with contracts that look rough now out of the context they were signed in. Hope every season you finish among the lasts (with empty seats) to hopefully have a good position in a shitty lottery with no guarantees of getting the talent you need … if you struck gold congrats maybe you might be out of it in less than 10 years … if not your CBJ or Buffalo, good luck with that.

@@greencontroller9692 In the past two years, the Caps have sold on: Lars Eller, Erik Gustaffson, Marcus Johanson, Dimitri Orlov, Anthony Mantha, Evgeny Kuzentsov, and Joel Edmunson. But yeah, apparently, they're "buyers" because they still need SOMEBODY to play in their top six. They've bought one year of Mangiapane, who will probably get flipped at next year's deadline, and taken a flier on Dubois (and moved out an overpaid backup goalie while doing it). That's it.

As a Caps fan, I don't approve. We're still worlds away from the Rangers and Canes. We're still probably behind New Jersey. Adding some 50-60 point players like Dubois and Mangiapane is an improvement to our team for sure, but we're still probably just the 4th best team in the division. I think we're more likely to finish bottom 3 in the division than we are to finish top 3 in the division. I'd rather commit to a rebuild than give up a 2nd round draft pick (even a Colorado 2nd round draft pick) for a 1 year rental of a 2nd line winger for a team that's borderline about whether or not they'll make the playoffs. Especially if he's getting 5.8 million for one season and isn't likely to be worth 5.8 million. I don't think that Mangiapane has much chance of performing well enough to get us back anything more than a late 2nd round pick in return in the not unlikely event that the Capitals are out of the playoff hunt at the trade deadline.

Plus like you said they can resign him for less or deal him for a 2nd in a yr? Caps were dreadful last yr in scoring goals & PP, like bottom 6 n the league, so adding a bit of offense capab can only help their fan base endure mediocrity. And at the same time, I think Calgary brought in enough goal scoring talent last year, plus they have some good goal scoring talent ready to move up from the AHL, that I don't think Mangiapane's goal scoring capabilities will be missed too much. Something that I feel like is getting missed with the Guentzel talks is that Carolina can give him 8 years whereas everywhere else can only do 7 years. We have to remember that even if the Canes only pay him something like 7.75 million per year for 8 years, that would be the equivalent of him making 8.8 million per year on a 7 year deal somewhere else. So Carolina might seem like they are lowballing if they offer him under 8 million, but if they are offering him the full 8 year term it kind of evens out. Hopefully they can get him locked up.

I loved Jake during his time with the Pens but holy cow he's not a $10M/year player. I think the max he could get is $8.5M but I don't know who pulls a trigger on a deal like that. Maybe he heads to Seattle?

This gives Calgary close to 30M in cap space. There is a lot you can do with that especially with 1 or 2 year deals with older vets. I hope they try to out together a monster team for 1 or 2 years

I can absolutely see Guentzel hitting $10 million per, especially if he accepts a shorter term. How many wingers in the league would you put ahead of him? Three or four? How many of them are free agents on Monday? Figure he's staying in Carolina, but he can afford to go wherever he wants. A few teams are big game hunting, and he's the top prize.

Only way he gets 10M is if he takes a 3 or 4 year deal. I doubt he’s gonna do that though. Some sucker will pay 6 or 7 year term. Maybe Seattle 😝

all we know is that on july 1st, UFA's will secure the bag and NHL GM's will have buyers remorse in 12 to 24 months. My most wild prediction is Patrick Kane getting 9M per year for 5 years with Detroit.

We can't pay big Z $5mil for being a number 4-6th dman. The problem is that you can't play him too high up for too long because then he's prone to making mental mistakes. I think $4.5-4.75mil times four years is decent for big Z. Maybe someone will randomly pay him $5-6mil/season on July 1st...

Don’t see the Canes going anywhere near $10M for Jake. I hear $7.75M x 8 years is their offer. He seemed to really like playing with Aho, but if someone is silly enough to offer $10M, Jake should probably take it.

0:32 Honestly, this is my least favourite move the Canucks have made in their flurry of activity this week. Having said that, it's not brutal. If Jake wants to get paid, he won't be wearing a Canucks uniform in the fall. And that's not to say I'm calling him greedy. I'm just saying, it seems almost everyone in a position to re-sign in Vancouver has left a little bit of money on the table.

That's why I can't get invested into the NHL so much - not even 2 or 3 years gone and all of your favourite players from a team are already scattered all around the continent. There's so much movement going on you've got no chance to grow attached to a team the same way as in, say football (vel 'soccer'). At least if you don't have a club in your area :)

Anything more than 7 million per year is too much for Guentzel, but GM's are st00pid and overpay for players all the time. This won't be any different. He'll get around 8.5, but again, it's gonna be too much and we'll be talking about it in the next couple seasons. Just my $0.02
