Flare Scratch Tutorial by DJ Short-e.
This week, Short-e teaches you how to do the Flare scratch.
The Flare scratch is an open fader scratch. Start with the fader open, release the sample then cut the sound in 2 by closing the fader then opening it again. You can flare on the forwards record movement and the back.
Beat # 8528 used in this clip is available here:

Good tutorial. Quite tricky to get the hang of this scratch as I always end up transforming somehow when I try to do it fast.

When I started DJing- vinyl was the only option, unless you wanted to rock a jog wheel... Now- Serato, Traktor and other DVS software allows for an "easier" entry into the hobby. NO- it doesn't make any actual DJ techniques easier... but it does make it easier to get source material. You got that new Kendrick Lamar on vinyl? no- ok You got that Beyonce on vinyl? no- ok How about the classic battle records like Wizard of Ahhhhhhs, Super Seal, Hee Haw Breaks, Bionic Booger Breaks??? stuff that has been out of print for years... well, they are pretty much impossible to find, and when you do, they have been trashed so hard you can hardly find a clean sample that the needle will stay locked in on. If I'm using Serato with the lid closed on my laptop- how is it any different than a classic vinyl record? So don't go being a doofy hater... you show how little you really know about the art by negating someone's talent and creativity simply because there is a computer somewhere in the loop. If it's dope- appreciate it for what it is

Switching the cross fader backwards is known as 'battle mode' I think isn't it and is how most of the pros do it - it is pretty standard practice.. I am a DJ not a turntablist - I'd like to know why you scratch heads out there do this, I presume it must be easier

Great video-thank you! Any suggestions, for easier transitions between open and closed-fader scratches? It seems like one style often leaves the fader in the wrong spot, unless you're scratching off-beat (e.g. 1/8th, 1/16th notes). But then, those off-beat open-fader scratches feel really foreign-like my brain thinks it's doing something totally different from the example in this video. Hope that makes sense!

@SUPRRREMEkid I got the gist of this after watching the video and trying it a few times. It's just a matter of changing your timing with the crossfader. Instead of shutting it at the end of a stroke you're shutting it in the middle. I got my head round it by thinking of it as "interrupting" my scratch motion. Hope you've got it down :)

I have an annoying habit of closing the fader at each end of a sample so obviously I need more practice, but I was wondering whether it would sound the same if I was to do it like this. Open fader at start of the sample, cut the sample in half, then close the fader again at end of the sample, and do the same again when pulling back. I just can't seem to start with fader on open.

@studioscratches Yeah it definitely sounds a lot better on vinyl, can hear how clean and crisp it is when you do it. As if to make matters more difficult for myself, I spin happy hardcore, and my nerves get to me when recording mixes on here where I want to do a bit of scratching! :P

@studioscratches I definitly got it with the same speed as you do in 1:48 . But I can't do it faster, altough i'm keepin' practising, any ideas? Perhaps I have to scratch on a shorter part of the sample as usual, so it's easier to move my scratching hand faster... (Sorry if my english is bad, but I'm french :-D)

@studioscratches What would you have done before the hamster feature was available on a mixer? Is it something you cannot do or just find too fiddly? Do you find the cut-in on the Vestax crossfader good enough for all modern scratches or wish it was sharper?

I have a crossfader question. On the video it's closed (muted) when it's on a playing deck side (right from viewer point of view) and open on the oposite (further) side from the playing deck. On my Numark MixtracPro (midi controller) it's the other way around. I'm new to all this and it really caught my eye. What is the reason for that? Thanks
@corprinus
@corprinus 12 жыл бұрын
Do you think that not having a crossfader curve would make a big difference in advanced scratches like the flare and boomerang? I'm currently using a Numark Mixdeck Express and I find it hard to do flares since you have to close the fader on the first part of it. The sound cuts out before I can hear the first step of the flare. Any advice?

hey i know this may seem like a dumb question (specially coming from someone who DJs and mixes alot). I have been self teaching via youtube for scratching. does it matter if the fader is on a "cut" switch to do this scratch? does the flare sound better with a "mixing based" setting for scratching. (sorry if that doesnt make any sense) thanks again for the clearly understandable video
@Shootinglefty
@Shootinglefty 5 жыл бұрын
I just happened to see this question. I think I can answer it. By "cut" you are probably referring to the "contour" feature that makes the fade faster/sudden or slower/even? If so, leave it on "cut/fast/sudden" for almost every time of scratching trick. That's just my opinion, but it is probably the case for most all battle DJs. I think the slow/even crossfader may be what techno guys and club people use for beat matching etc, although they probably just use the main channel faders, not cross faders. Hope that helps!
