Chirp Flare Scratch Tutorial by DJ Short-E.
This week, Short-e teaches you how to do a Chirp Flare scratch.
The Chirp Flare scratch is a "combo" scratch combining a chirp then a flare. You can one click flare or 2 click flare. Please see the other video tutorial for how to flare and chirp.
Beat # 8546 used in this clip is available here:

Hey Short-E can you futher explain what you're doing when you swing this scratch? The movements don't seem the same. It sounds like you're doing a flare forwards, but I'm not sure what's happening on the way back. It doesn't sound like a flare forwards and a flare back. It sounds like the flare back might only be half a flare then you go right into the chirp. Yeah I'm confused :(

Hmm I know i'm 9 years late for the comment, but I don't quite understand what's happening when you swing it? is it just a matter of how fast you do it to let a pause after the combo before restarting it or just doing it fully in time so there's no pause, or putting in different pause time between the chirps and the flare ? Ty

Hi I have a full video explaining this here: schoolofscratch.com/swing/ Its like the second note is delayed slightly. Also check out www.attackmagazine.com/technique/passing-notes/daw-drum-machine-swing/ - the same principle

ehy short-e, you're one of the only people i know who jog with the left hand and fade with the right. I do it too, but i thought i was the only one. just so i know, is your cross fader inverted (right deck to the left and left deck to the right)?

That Video is very good. But one comment. You should leave the hand on the record in case of short samples (for the flare part of the scratch). That gives you more control of the sample and makes it easier to handle.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO KEEP A CLOSE EYEON DA RECORD MARKER..I TEND TO STRAY OFF AND LOOK UPWARD THINKING I CAN HEAR MY MARK, BUT DO YOU ALWAYS LOOK CLOSE TO THE RECORD?

Man, finally nailed a 2 click orbit with my left hand workin the Xfader & my right on the record (was always a righty on the fader). Learning to do all that fancy scratching on my weak side was awkward and took some time getting used to, but being a hiphop DJ, i needed to be able to scratch & cut on both my strong & weak sides.
@Joeybits
@Joeybits 13 жыл бұрын
This scratch for me was a lot easier to learn than a 1 click flare for some reason. It just feels more automatic. A 1 click flare is really awkward feeling, even today i still have some trouble with it and can't do nearly as fast or as clean as i can a chirp flare.

So basically it's a transformer scratch just with the crossfader on the other side?
@studioscratches
@studioscratches 10 жыл бұрын
Hey! My cross fader is reversed but you can do this with the crossfader regular. It's best to think of it as open and closed fader movements. See this article for a complete breakdown: www.studioscratches.com/scratchy-100-chirp-flare-scratch-tutorial/ I can try and sum it up in text: Flare = open fader, move fader forwards and click once in the middle of the sound. The fader is open at the end of the sound. Pull the record back and do the same thing - clicking once in the middle. The you do a chirp = push the record forward then close the fader, open the fader and pull the record back. Repeat the flare and chirps continuously in this way. The transformer scratch is more of a closed fader scratch tapping the fader on to make sounds. Hope that helps. Maybe watch the video a few more times and start slowly.

I think you would agree the hardest part is getting it going as one motion in rhythm. Doesn't take long to do both parts,but doing it without a little pause in between the flare and chirp is tough and takes A LOT of practice. It reminds me of the old pat your head while rubbing your stomach test to determine if you can be a drummer. You have to mentally train your record hand to do something different while keeping the crossfader clicks even. :)
