Some practical tips for using study cards to reduce your study time and get a solid foundation in learning any topic. This video also includes some surprising advanced techniques that show how to use flash cards to also learn higher-level thinking in any subject. Includes discussion of the Leitner system (plus Patton's adaptation of the Leitner system), color codes and symbols, using cards to learn processes and ordered structures, and using cards to build concept maps (mind maps).

i kind of came up with this stuff in med school on my own (though i didnt understand why it worked so well) and i must say, these methods are SO effective. i learned about 3 weeks of material in like 3-4 hours the first time i did this, and i went from having a failing grade's grasp of microbiology to getting one of the highest final exam score in the class in just a day or two. the last bit about playing with the cards in terms of categories and whatnot is very key. coding, organization and making ur card as less wordy and most direct as possible is all very key.

Kaja, I'm sorry that you were soooo bored watching my video. And I'm really glad that you found that it has "great information." I was going for informational, not entertainment, so this is wonderful. But you'll be glad to know that I am working on a version with sock puppets, lasers, explosions, and magic tricks for those looking for a little excitement in their study tips videos.

This is amazing i have used flash cards before but it never really worked for me. i guess its because i got bored with doing the same look at a card return card. Now i know there are so many ways to use it and test myself.

Thanks for this video. I am trying to quit smoking and I decided to learn a language. Things are not working well. I really enjoyed seeing this. I believe you have helped me tremendously. I've got index cards given to me from where I work. I have a lot of work to do to write things down. With your help a better approach. I am so grateful.

I like your correlation with Bloom's taxonomy.Students should match the learning technique to the assessment for good grades and always practice to get faster. Aim for creating propositional concept maps for mastery, metacognition ,collaboration and instruction/tutoring, ie planning to pass it on.

@kevintpatton That's a good idea, I'll try it :) It'll help me with a lot of the initial learning, though I might need a new method to get my head around the functional anatomy and 3D nature of the human body.

thank u for the video..I really want to do flashcards but there is just to much information in one chapter...if I do flashcards,I would be having a stack of flashcards...is there any way I could cram all that info in just a few cards???

I suggest breaking the big deck of cards into several smaller decks and trying to master one deck, then move on to the next, then go back to the earlier decks for additional review. Another approach is to work on one deck and then once you're pretty solid with it, start moving the cards you miss to the next deck--then move onto that next deck. Sometimes, there's just a lot to learn in a short period of time, I'm afraid.

Your method may not be useful, as you may not reach to read the correct ones very often and dont have a record of how many you got right or wrong... It´s a more handy method, that is true :)
