As an amateur photographer, I've hesitated to use flash for a very long time. But after watching a couple of your tutorials, I'm getting more confident about using them. You certainly have a way of explaining these technical issues in a manner that "us, laymen" can understand and bring them to good use. Besides that, I absolutely love (& envy) your Foo Fighters shirt collection! :-) And the tongue-in-cheek tone of your videos also makes me wanna come back for more. Keep it up!

@@mikesphotography I've got a question though. I'm using an APS-C camera, with a crop sensor (factor 1.5). So, if I dial in my focal length on the flash, should I set it to the focal length the lens indicates, or multiply this with 1.5 to match the full-frame equivalent (more or less)?

Thanks for that Mike. A good presentation of the principles of ISL. I would appreciate seeing a little more on how to illuminate a large group: maybe a group of 20 people in three tiers, using a main feathered light and a supporting and smaller light at the far end.

I personally enjoyed this mini-series. I am currently being overwhelmed with learning lighting techniques and flash photography. One idea for a future video (if you've not already done one) is explaining the differences between Strobe and Speedlite, and how, when working together as slaves, they offer different lighting sources. I only mention this as I have two YN-speedlites which I sometimes slave from my Godox SK300II, however when I set my Godox transmitter to Hypersync (or HSS, whichever it is), my Strobe flash significantly reduces the omitted light when I go past 1/200 on my Canon 5DmkIII, even at full power (full images, no curtain bars), therefore I have to adjust my ISO and/or Aperture to where I don't really want them to be, and/or move the softbox extremely close. Does this make sense? Haha. Happy to send photo samples via email if it's something that interest you.
@mikesphotography3 жыл бұрын
Hey Dale, great idea for a future video! 👍 The reason for the drop in power in HSS, is that the flash has to stay on for longer to cover the whole duration of the shutter being open, so you don't get the black bars. But because the flash duration is so much longer, this significantly effects the power output dropping it by quite a bit. It's annoying but something you have to live with unfortunately...I've had some shoots where I've had it set up perfectly below the sync speed, but then I push it just above the sync speed, and into HSS, and all of a sudden I have to change all of my settings to suit... Thanks for watching 😁👍

you series on flash photography is simply unsurpassable Mike, my question is how to use a flash in a simple way in an event shooting, I see people using a single flash placed on the camera with a small softbox on it, does that make sense?
@mikesphotography3 жыл бұрын
Hey Paolo, thanks so much, I'm glad they are helping!! With event photography, this is one discipline that TTL is better as the distances of your subjects are constantly changing. This is more fill flash photography when there is enough ambient light about. You're using the ambient light as your main source and then using the flash, sometimes with a slight bounce, to fill in the shadows. 👍 I'm hoping when events start up again to be able to do one on this very subject...might be a while though as the restrictions have become stricter where we live at the moment. 🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for watching 😁👍

yes, they have been very useful.....I get it, for events ttl is the safest bet, looking forward to a video dedicated to this topic....

Great tutorials. I've read quite often that the nearer (i.e. bigger) the light source is (in my case a 48 inch softbox) the softer the light will be. The light falloff will be more noticeable though. How to compensate for that?
@mikesphotography3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. To compensate for the falloff when the softbox is really close, just move it away fro your subject a little...you need to find the distance that works for you and your taste. Normally you'll find a sweet spot where it works well. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Hey Mike, I really enjoy your content. I have learned a lot from you. I do need some particular help though. I bought my first speedlight a Godox TT685n and X1n trigger, but i cant seem to get the trigger to recognise the flash wirelessly. The flash works great on the camera, it works on top of the trigger thats mounted on the camera. I have them both on the same group and channel number. Group A and channel 1. I have watched every YT video there is on the subject, but still cant get it to work. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I was wondering if you could provide a video on balancing different flashes for a group shot? I have different speed lights. If I want to move them back enough to shoot a group of people (our family is 22 when we all get together) I need to use three lights to get enough light. All my lights are different powers, as I acquired them over time as budget allowed. Not sure I asked this right hope you get what I mean. Keith
