Really impressed with how well the photos turned out with just that little on camera flash...Makes me think I've been over thinking shooting with flash on my F100!.

Good video. I always used flash with film if there wasn’t enough light, which was most of winter. Not much choice if you want to take pictures! Mind you “analog film” doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me.

How do you measure the light indoors and adjust the settings in the flash to it?
@levesz14 жыл бұрын
I know it's been 5 months, but you don't meter (I mean I don't). There is a Guide Number about the power of your flash. Flashes like the above one (contax tla200) can do TTL metering, so it is going to meter the scene for itself, and adjust the power correctly. You just need to dial in the settings you want. I used to have G1, and I was using the sibling of this flash, the TLA140, and I just set my aperture to f4, went real close, and my photograph turned out nicely. There are flashes which can't do TTL metering, then they are always firing at FULL POWER! Usually, there is a little table of settings on the back of the flash which tells you the correct settings. For example, for a subject at which is 10 feet away, you are going to need an aperture of f8 to have a correct exposure with the syncronization of the flash. Real simple. Medium format, and leaf shutter lenses can throw some math at you, but nothing too hard.
@ChrisButel4 жыл бұрын
Hey man. Sorry for such a slow reply. I think Levente gave a really comprehensive answer to this... The short answer was yer we weren't really metering because the camera was doing some voodoo magic to auto calibrate for the flash.

Love the images, great work! just wondering tho what f stop and iso you were shooting at with the flash? for these shots?
@ChrisButel6 жыл бұрын
Hey mate. ISO of the film was Fujifilm pro 400. You may already know this but you don’t really change your ISO when shooting on film. The iso sensitivity is baked into the film stock. In terms of the f stop I think we were on f2.8 the whole time and the shutter adjusts automatically for the exposure of the flash. The contax is a really interesting film camera. It’s a rangefinder and a lot of stuff is automated. Great for street photography. Sorry I couldn’t be more scientific. This was the only time I used the camera. Thanks for the comment bro. Trying to work on some more videos now. ✌🏻

ShootFilm You sound like a snobby, insecure photographer
@ChrisButel5 жыл бұрын
All good mate. Thanks for the comment. I will say though that it was really interesting the way Troy can turn something like his apartment in to a set ... in the b roll sure it’s not super interesting but I think he can really capture a mood and a vibe with the way he directs talent and the way he takes photos... if you can make your apartment look interesting then you can make heaps of stuff look good... it’s an interesting creative challenge. I also have always subscribed to the idea that natural light is better for film and photography but to see a style that is so reliant on an on camera flash and still get really cool results was An eye opening experience for me. I follow a dude named Daniel Arnold on insty who does some really cool street photography with the same set up... might be worth checking his stuff out if you wanna see how other people use this set up. Anyways thanks for the comment bro... Also sorry that it took 5 months to reply.
