to avoid flares or "starbursts" from light sources, usually shooting at any aperture under 5.6... the lower you take your aperture, the less this flare will occur. from my experience it comes from the aperture not the exposure time.

An 82A or 82B filter will help greatly with daylight films. They don't block as much light as an 80A blue filter, so they're slightly easier to use.

Try pre-flashing your film. That will bring down the effect of reciprocity failure significantly and get you much better shadow detail. Also low ISO films like Ektar 100 are actually better for multi second exposures than fast films. Pushed pre-flashed Portra 400 or Cinestill could be the ticket for handheld nighttime film photography.

You recommend getting a dedicated meter. I noticed that using a DSLR as a meter in spot meter mode struggles at night time (even on, say, the ground under a street lamp it shows simply "too dark" etc). Specs show similar low-light sensitivity between most cameras and the current model Sekonic spot meters. Is there a difference in real world use?

Curious at night what do you usually meter for? I'm assuming the key focus of the shot rather than the shadows. This is what I have been struggling with I've been trying to strike a balance measure multiple parts of the frame then take an average.. but not sure this is the correct method.

Cool video guys! I've been trying to figure out a way to take photos of myself painting various sculptures with my medium format camera - in order to see the motion in about a 30second time period. Would this work for that? Also, would I need a friend to stand there holding the cable or do they sell timed cable releases?
@ReubenJBrown7 жыл бұрын
I believe you can buy locked cable releases (so the button holds in, but you would still have to un-trigger it) or on more modern 35mm cameras (Nikon F100 as an example) there are sometimes ports for timed release cables.

Not sure the shorter exposure would reduce flare. Isn't that just determined by the contrast and smallness of the light sources?
@alvareo927 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure he doesn't mean flare but the colour casts you get under long exposures on film, like on Portra 800 for example you can see it's really green, and it's not just a matter of light colour temperatures. It's also an effect of reciprocity failure, which wasn't mentioned in the video.
@baumstanz7 жыл бұрын

I've noticed something that usually happens to me, though I use digital cmareas and don't shoot analog: many photos taken during the night or very dark seem to be in daylight. I suppose that is due to big apperture or very long exposure. The point is how do you know if the exposure is right and the photo will look natural? Many times seem to be really artificial.
@kurbfeeler3 жыл бұрын
I know this was 4 years ago, but they can look like daylight when you follow the guidance of the in-camera light meter. It's attempting to give you info based on what it understands a properly exposed scene is and day vs night are very different. Using the cameras live view viewfinder is much more accurate imo than the ev suggestion.

Alex 0202 hi Alex my name is Emanuel im from El Salvador( the smallest country of Central America). I became in love with photography at an early age, thanks to my dad he used to be photographer. He used to go to parks and offer to take polaroids pictures to couples that were dating at the parks. At that period of time it was rare to have have cameras . (Not like today we all carry an i- phone) I went to work with him a couple of times. I was probably 10 years old. There was one time i fould a roll of money at the park. It was equivalent to $300. 00 us dollars. I was the happiest kid on the planet!!!!!
