With winter knocking on the door here in NZ my thoughts have started to go to the Tongariro. A river that most fly anglers in NZ make a pilgrimage to at some point in their life. The promise of getting to have a crack at strong rainbows running in from the lake to begin spawning. At the start of their runs these fish a strong fighters and a beautiful chrome colour. While a lot of people will tie on glo-bugs or another variation of an egg pattern I have come to really enjoy caddis patterns as well. This is a heavy version of flash back caddis I like to use. You can tie this without the weight as well and without the flash giving you a range of different uses. This includes a heavy “bomb” nymph to get down deep or a more natural pattern to tie of the back of it. As always adjust the colour to what you need.
HAPPY TYING EVERYONE!
