Reading the comments...damn. Monster, I HIGHLY appreciate you allowing me to go home every day I was there, especially that ONE day...truth be told, I was terrified, but you probably felt me and knew that I was. You were cool as steel. Everyone respected you. When I transferred out, I used to tell the new staff my story about you in hopes that they'd realize that tin badge ain't what makes you or saves you when you need savin'. It's your respect. The respect that you earn day in and day out if you wanna survive to retire. Thanks for keeping those on the Tiers, heck, the whole damn Block, in line. It made my job easy. Rest In Peace, Big Man. I'm honored to have been there, around OG's like you!
@snow32303 жыл бұрын
U worked at one of his prisons he was in or something? If so what year? What happened?
@SQTierHog3 жыл бұрын
@@snow3230 Yes. I'm retired now, but yes, late 80's early 90's, East Block, Bay Side, running yard release. It was done with gunners on the rail. The gunners would tell us when to stop and when to walk. I was the one to escort Monster. I was a bit nervous from the get-go, because I'd already heard about Monster from staff. However, Monster and those staff had respect, I was a new guy. Anyhow, monster and I were coming down to the 2nd tier (Monster lived on the 3rd or 4th tier.), Monster suddenly stopped, immediately told me one of his cuffs broke loose. However he kept his wrists together still. I thought I was going to pass out. But I kept a hold of his arm, and tried not to show any signs of fear. I thought, oh shit, it's on. (I was newer staff at the time, I was not a regular in that block, so I hadn't been around to establish respect with the men) The gunner yells out to Monster, "Monster, what's up?" Monster yells back to him,"it's all good." (They weren't yelling as in disrespectfully, they were yelling because of the distance between us and the gunner). Monster continues walking downstairs, I still got him by his bicep, my heart's racing. I'm waiting for him to turn on me any minute. But, thank God, he does not. As we get down to the floor, a few Officers are right there and one of them asks Monster what happened on the second tier. He tells them one of his cuffs were broke. They ask him,"Everything's cool, right Monster?" Monster chuckles and says,"Yeah, I got no problem with the Officer (referring to me)." They told Monster they appreciated him being cool, then put another pair of cuffs on his wrists. I continue to take Monster outside and when we get to the yard gate, as I'm taking the cuffs off him, I tell him I appreciated him being cool. He nodded his head, and said,"Respect man, respect." I got chills. I remember thinking, what if monster did have a problem with me? It's times like that, that you never know what's going to happen, you never know when you're out on the street and it comes down to... have you been respectful and treated people right, or did you abuse the authority you thought you had? Thank goodness, my attitude from day one was that I was no better than anyone else, no matter the uniform, I could have easily been on the other side of those bars. I just needed the job. Anyhow, I don't know if that is more than what you expected my answer to be, but that one situation is why I wrote what I wrote about Monster passing away. Again, may he Rest in Peace. Thank you for your interest. Be safe out there.
@snow32303 жыл бұрын
@@SQTierHog Thank you for actually responding with a detailed answer. Great to read. I try to read as much info on Monster as possible. I’m just really interested in his life and what he went through back then. After reading his book, from my understanding, the late 80s early 90s is around the time he started to become a student of the New Afrikan movement. When he started to change as a person and learn to communicate better without using his fists. He started learning the value of respect. This is all just based off the dates in his book though and what he wrote about him self during that time frame so I could be wrong. This is all based on the book. He wrote about an incident in the early 80s where he was involved in a fight a with an officer while locked up so maybe you caught him at the right time during the change. Lol
@SQTierHog3 жыл бұрын
@@snow3230 I would agree with what you're learning/have learned. When I wrote in my initial reply to this video about the Staff having respect for Monster, and he for them, was earned by both 'sides'. And, when I wrote about Monster helping with keeping that block running smoothly, was because Monster had the respect of the Fellas (I've never liked the term 'inmate'), as well. He wasn't tolerable to anyone disrespecting anyone. And, as you know, he had the street cred (credibility) to back himself up. If there was someone, usually a youngster, who just came into the block, and wanted to 'prove' themselves, usually by giving staff a hard time, Monster could almost 100 percent (actually, 100 percent, lol) talk with that/those individual(s) into acting right. Thus, indirectly, helping us keep a calm environment. And, you're correct, he must've been 'changed' by then. To clarify, 'helping us' wasn't his reason, I believe it's just the way he wanted it, no more violence, use your mouth if you have an issue. However, I'd say that if words failed, and I don't recall when words didn't work, Monster had his 'prior' ... 'reputation', lol. Now, I could expand on my prior story about the handcuff situation, that really makes that story more profound, I'll elaborate, but, up to you. And, another situation that I recalled while writing this to you, if you wish. Regardless, thank you for your kind reply and interest. One never knows when we leave a comment or reply, who may see it, who it may affect. Be safe!

@@SQTierHog i’ll be glad to hear what ever stories you got involving Monster. I try to gain as clear a picture as possible. I could listen to Monster war stories/stories all day.
