I just finished the video. I'm only 22 so for me getting information like this is priceless. I do watch a lot of classic fights but not growing up in these era's I don't know the back stories. Thanks Hatman this was great. And i agree that having an iron jaw can be a curse. Look at Roy Jones Jr and James Toney for example. Roy has been knocked out many times but works for HBO and speaks very clearly whereas Toney has had over 90 fights and never been knocked out, but due to his iron chin and lack of traning/discipline he took a lot of damage in the second half of his career and now you can barely understand him.

I've spoken to my uncle many times about this fight as he was ringside and I'll never tire of hearing about the atmosphere that he said was in the venue that night. It was the most intensive and electric atmosphere he experienced in 30 years of going to live boxing. After this fight he's never gone back to watch live boxing as he felt so guilty that he was shouting for Benn to finish Mcclenan and then he nearly died. It's truly a beautiful but brutal sport at times. They were both tremendous warriors.

McClellan’s problem was caused by too much gym wars in the kronk gym, like James toney, he was blinking alot in the Jackson fight after the fight he told Jackson he had headache for months, there’s a interview on boxing scene where a kronk gym sparring partner told a story of McClellan getting hurt in sparring by light punches then blink alot. Also McClellan just like James toney loved gym wars, with many big punchers even heavyweight,and sparring in kronk gym were like real fights .

they gave him 20 seconds to get back in the ring....you only get 20 seconds if you fall completely out the ring and on to the floor....Benn was kept up on the apron of the ring by pundits and others....the rules are you only get 10 seconds if you stay on the apron just like a regular knock down....it took Benn 11 seconds to get back in the ring...he should have been counted out and lost....then sods law happens and the other guy gets brain damage....ref should be banned forever.
@phillipcarlroberts46406 жыл бұрын
MMA NEWS a lot of people did blame the ref in this fight but there is also a timekeeper present ,but I personally place the blame on McClellan's corner man ,if you watch the "fight of their lives" documentary you will notice that McClellan's corner man did not understand his role correctly ,he thought that he was promoting a boxer but he is there to advise and protect his boxer really ,he has 1 min between every round to look into his fighters eyes and see if he is okay ,this is one part of the job he completely neglected though and he never asked McClellan how he was feeling ,another is on the advice front ,he had no advice for McClellan ,McClellan's corner man had previously been Manny Steward and many believe that if Manny was there instead of that fool the tragedy would never have happened.

In almost forty years of watching boxing, this is the best fight I've ever seen, and Benn's victory - especially in light of the near-disasterous first round - is the greatest win by a British fighter on home shores. People either forget or don't understand how terrifyingly intimidating McClellan was. He was a THUNDEROUS banger with truly paralysing power, a steel jaw, and underrated skills. I was a massive Benn fan but picked McClellan to win in the first round. Benn was the smaller man (despite McClellan being the one who was moving up in weight), wasn't really considered the better boxer, and certainly didn't have the same punch resistance; yet somehow he won. It was the best example I've ever seen of a fighter REFUSING to lose - of soaking up so much punishment to the point of saturation, where he suddenly became seemingly oblivious to pain. A brilliant, BRILLIANT fight, and a performance for the ages from the fearless Dark Destroyer.

Apparently McClellan was hit by a jab in sparring after his first Jackson fight and his sparring partner said he was doing the same blinking and had to stop the spar as even a jab had hurt him. The effects of having that iron chin were evident before this fight already.
@mrt4457 жыл бұрын
Michael Thompson After he beat Jackson he was blinking in a similar fashion but it didnt lead to anything tragic. I believe Jackson caused the majority of the damage by weakening his iron chin, an iron chin rarely lasts until the end of a career.
@antiduckable7 жыл бұрын
Nice one! I like this new format. For me Nigel Benn is my favourite boxer ever, what he lacked in ability he more than made up for in sheer determination. Would love to see highlights of Michael Watson and Chris Eubank, culminating in their second fight.
@j-bmash56417 жыл бұрын
Benn couldn't miss with those lead hooks especially the leaping lead left hook, I imagine if Manny was in the corner that night he would of drew Gerald's attention to it.
@mrt4457 жыл бұрын
If these guys fought 20 times Gerard knocks out Benn 19 out of 20 within 6 rounds. It was just that 1 time that Benn wins in a weird circumstance that occurred in real life. Gerrard beats any top British super middleweight in history, this is a guy who apparently destroyed Roy Jones as an amateur boxer.
@sugeknight60327 жыл бұрын
mr t this was just a tragic accident. McClellan was superior to every British boxer at the time
@margaretcronin55817 жыл бұрын
mr t gerald threw his best at benn and he kept coming.ali v frazier 3 look like they were close to death and i think with this fight gerald got pushed and so did benn to such limits that it ended a tragedy
@mrt4457 жыл бұрын
Suge Knight He would have beaten any Super middle today. Benn and Eubank weren't even the best in the UK even in their primes. Watson clearly was, and Watson is another fighter who beats Eubank 99% of the time, hell he did it the first time but was robbed. I believe Watson also beats Calzaghe who I put slightly above both Eubank and Benn in their primes, mind you I even bet money that Joe would easily beat a overhyped Jeff Lacey because both Eubank and Benn would have stopped him within 12. Benn and Eubank made life easier for Calzaghe, although I like Calzaghe he would have had to fight both Watson and McClellan if their last fights had not ended tragically. McClellan was as tall and rangy as Kessler and superior in every way, faster hands and a harder puncher with better stamina.
@sugeknight60327 жыл бұрын
mr t I think Gerald was also tougher than most super middleweights.. tougher than Nigel too, Nigel was mentally tough but the McClellan benn fight has always been suspicious to me when Benn didn't take a test

I watched that fight live, some things worth mentioning are that many people were surprised at Benns physique and he looked notably bigger, people suggested he might be on steroids also. After the fight and after he realised what had happened to mcclellan, Benn fainted and was taken out on a stretcher, this meant that he was conveniently unable to give a blood test to check for PED's. About Mcclellan though, he used to do illegal dog fights and used to buy defenseless dogs and put them in with his fighting dogs just for practice. They used to tear the poor dogs up limb from limb. I didn't lose any sleep over Mcclellans fate...
