I graduated in 85. What a great time. Things were starting to get complicated since I was growing up, and yet, it was a simpler time. And don’t even get me started on being a kid in the 70s and early 80s. That was a great time to grow up. Didn’t realize it then, but now I can see that.

I graduated in 82 and I remember all these very well. We were lucky to live in the 70’s and 80’s . They really were the best of times for my generation. America was in a much better place back then and jobs were all over, even in a small farm town I lived in. We had textiles, pencil factories and two large malls, (one has recently been removed but you could always get a job) a small country store up town, small ice cream and sandwich shop and every weekend the farmers would sell their goods.. Now that place is sad. We never had shootings. I do remember however, the Tylenol scare and it was a HUGE thing and it started the “seal everything movement”. We had great TV and movies and family got together for dinner every night. We waited to watch shows that came on. I was just telling my mother the other day how she use to require us to call her from the pay phone before and after the move at the mall and we would go to the arcade room and deposit quarters to play a game. And we got our soda from glass bottles that we had to return to get a nickel back. We played outside, went on a lot of great picnics, went camping, swimming and did not have air conditioning so we went to sleep with the windows open at night and we just dealt with it. We never had to wear helmets and padding to ride our bikes and we climbed tress and made forts in the forest and we turned out just fine. Yes sir! I would go back and do it again if I could. We were very lucky to have lived then. It truly was a much better time not only for me, but for our country. My first job was at a mall working for McDonald’s and then the Gap. My generation has seen so much from technology advancements to all manner of disasters. Yet it was still a great time to be American! Every time you turned the TV on back then you would see commercials for, made in America! or the words in the USA!. it really was about our country! Things were not at all instant and we waited for the night of the week movies to come on. But then ,unfortunately, greed took over when Kmart came into play followed by Walmart and nothing but ‘made in China’. Here we are today in 2022 where the networks are openly at each other‘s throat’s and the country is divided not to mention morals and values have gone straight to hell. I’m glad I grew up during that time. I have very fond memories of holidays, season changes and summer vacations. The kids today hide behind a machine all day long, it’s so sad what has happened to humanity. It’s also disgraceful what’s happening to our country and our government. I feel sorry for the new generations of kids it’s just terrible. God Bless all of us ! Our country needs God brought back into it, not removed.

@@TheODLawson23 1978 here. I really do think the 80's and 90's were a golden age in America. But I can still remember my parents and grandparents at the time reminiscing about the 50's and 60's as the high water mark for American civilization, but I don't buy it: too much strife and not enough peace and prosperity for everyone. The 80's and 90's had both like we had never seen before (or since.) Then it all started to change after NAFTA passed, (not that that was the only factor) but it impoverished a lot of the country.

My aunt and I would do a snacking tray, and one of the shows we watched while we had our snacking tray was "The Golden Girls". With all four of the main cast members from that show in heaven now, I figure that Rose is boring them with another St. Olaf story, Sophia is starting off a sentence with "Picture it, Sicily...(fill in the year)", Dorothy is shaking her head in embarrassment, and Blanche is fantasizing about spending a night in the sack with some big-time male celebrity.

One of the things I remember about the mid 80's was that car technology was rapidly changing. For example in 1985, you could get a Chevy Cavalier with modern front wheel drive and a fuel-injected engine, or you could get an old-school Chevy Caprice with rear wheel drive and a carbureted V8. 1985 was a watershed year. After working in Minneapolis/St. Paul for 13 years I got laid off on the railroad but was able to transfer to another locomotive shop in western Nebraska. The job was the same but the lifestyle was like walking into another world.

Wow, I remember all of those! In fact, my husband and I went on our first date to see Back to the Future. We also bought our Nintendo unit right after we got married in 1987. We would kind of race each other home to get to the game first 😄. Golden Girls was one of my favorite shows and I loved The Color Purple. I never wore my seat belt before the law came into effect here, but a year before it did I fell asleep at the wheel and ran into a ditch narrowly missing a large oak tree. For some unknown reason I had put my seatbelt on about 30 minutes beforehand. Needless to say, I was all for the law where many others protested. Thanks for the memories

I was 20 in 1985, those were really such great times. Back to the Future just seemed like such a cool movie when it came out. Funny I am watching Golden Girls re-runs on Disney + and was amazed Betty White was 99, sad she did not quite make it to 100, RIP Betty.

How did you forget Live Aid on July 13? It was the biggest concert of the year, broadcast around the world & the first simultaneous transatlantic concert, taking place in both London & Philadelphia. Phil Collins even did a stunt playing in London, then hopped on the Concorde and flew to Philly to perform there as well.

For us, 1985 was the year of our big family move. I've never driven on any of Route 66, and never knew that it started or ended in Chicago. I always assumed it went straight across the Southwest, and maybe into Missouri or somewhere. I'll have to look it up. I love the "Back to the Future" movies.

A few memories of 1985 come to mind. One of the more vivid ones was the introduction of New Coke and what an uproar that caused. I was glad when the original formula came back a couple months later. That was also the year when Motley Crue released their landmark album Theatre Of Pain, and I remember hearing their cover of "Smokin' In The Boys Room" all over FM radio. By the start of that year, I was all about a certain toy line we all know and love -- The Transformers. I got my first 3 Transformers the previous x-mas of 1984, and 1985 added more robots to my collection, most notably the Aerialbots gift pack which I found under the x-mas tree that year. Fall of 1985 marked the start of 8th grade, so it wouldn't be too much longer before I entered that awkward transition phase between kid and teenager. That said, 1985 was arguably the last year I felt that real visceral sense of joy and care-free happiness that we all feel as kids before the oncoming responsibilities of growing up eventually squash that out. Oh, and before I forget, for those of us who grew up in the southern New Jersey / Philly area, 1985 I believe was the year that marked the debut of a late-night show on NBC called Saturday Night Dead that aired on Sunday mornings at 1 AM right after Saturday Night Live was over. Stella, the host of the show and self-proclaimed "maneater of Manayunk", was sort of like an Elvira / Svengoolie knock-off who performed goofy skits and introduced corny b-movie horror flicks. I saw quite a few goofy horror movies on that show that I haven't seen since, that is of course if I dared to stay up that late! God bless 1985 and all the awesome memories that came with it!

No problem mentioning a ship wreck....and that might have been the most lucrative find of all time. But on September 1st 1985 the location of the most famous ship wreck of all time was made by Dr. Robert Ballard in the North Atlantic south of the Grand Banks. It was the first time in 73 years anyone had seen the legendary R.M.S. Titanic!

The premiere of The Golden Girls was actually the #1 show of the week, bringing in a 25.0/43 rating/share. It actually pushed The Cosby Show to second place for the week, which had a 24.6/40 rating/share. 227 premiered right after The Golden Girls and it ranked third for the week, with a 23.8/40 rating/share.

1985, the year I graduated senior high school in Washington, D.C. The music, the best damn music! Nothing like the 80's movies, music, aerobics exercise with leg warmers and tight leotards that women would wear, neon color hair. Surprised this video didn't speak of the music scene. ⚡⚡⚡⚡🤾🏻‍♂️🤸🏽‍♀️🤸🏻‍♂️⚡⚡⚡

It seems like the 1980's was a combination decade, a modern time that progressed, yet was still grounded in values of the past. After that, the foundation got shaky, then collapsed, and we're left with the mess we have today.
