Since this was the year I graduated high school, I feel compelled to comment. 1) Oprah didn't start out as the inspiration for all women everywhere; she started out as the sleazy version of Phil Donohue. The first few years of her show featured mostly deviants or celebs in trouble. She finally got so popular that she could afford to go respectable. Well, sort of. She DID inflict those famous non-doctors, Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz, onto the world. 2) Hands Across America. Citizen activism doesn't work unless laws are changed. Rather than holding hands, they should've been mad that Ronald "Iran-Contra" Reagan wrote the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act when he was governor of CA back in 1967, a law that deferred mental health decisions onto crazy people. Then, as president, he cut federal funding that managed state mental hospitals. Reagan was almost entirely responsible for the homelessness explosion that happened in the early 80s, especially in CA. Interesting that we can't find the money to reinstitute the old programs, though. Subsidizing Musk's death-trap tunnel and Bezos' trip to Mars are better investments, evidently. 3) After watching the Challenger blow up, we didn't do anything for the rest of the day, all of our classes. Our teachers were deeply depressed. I remember my English teacher put on a video: "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". I think my biology put on a tape of NOVA or something. A grim day.

Was a great year my coming of age year, fully employed working 32 hours a week at age 16 great friends everywhere. Chic's first taking notice of me. Buying our first house. I was working two towns away.and had broken free from my neighborhood. Philly cheese steak 2 dollars, coke 30 cents. Hot white chic everywhere. That world is now a Galaxy away.

In October 5th (4th in a few places) arguably the most 1980's of all cartoons Jem and The Holograms debuted in full-sized episodes in US Syndication. Most of the US audience who were raised in that era would remember watching them every Sunday* on WPIX (NYC), WGN (Chicago), KWGN (Denver) or KTLA (Los Angeles). Lots of other stations also broadcasted it on Sundays and some on Saturdays, depending on the market. Close to that same day it also debuted dubbed in Spanish in both Puerto Rico (Telemundo) and Mexico (Canal Cinco). * the following year the cartoon would move to a weekday morning or afternoon schedule, usually in tandem with Transformers and / or Gi Joe A Real American Hero

I remember all of these events. I sadly watched the shuttle explode that very cold morning. I was living in central Florida and me and two coworkers were just about to take a break when we caught the explosion on television.

For everyone mentioning Chernobyl, the video is called "Life in America", not USSR.

Waiting to enter theater to see Platoon, we noticed everyone exiting had an expression like she'll shocked on their faces. As a Sophomore walking to class in the Education building, I saw the same expression. January...Challenger😭

I rarely post because this is someone else's video and they can include what they want and tend to do a good job. But man, not including the world's biggest nuclear disaster is a no-no. But still, carry on!

@@kootybear Really? Then he needs to go back and apply your standard to all of these videos then. He had no problem mentioning that Diana died in a car accident in 1997. It didn't happen in America, she wasn't with Charles at that time for that matter and Chernobyl was WAY BIGGER to the world than having some ex-princess die in Paris. If it has to have happened in America or at least had some kind of impact on America, can we at least be consistent about it? Care to respond?

Liked your video but wish it was longer. I'm sure enough notable events happened to fill another 8 minutes. Why you limit the length of these, I'll never know.

I assume it is because he is busy, and doesn't have the time to make longer videos.
