The actor talked about how he came up with the voice of Dr. Smith. It was based on a newscast of a newscaster he had heard. He was looking for something that was neither human nor robotic, the voice of a program. Then he hears this guy doing a newscast in a certain tone and manner for 10 seconds or so and decides that Dr. Smith should speak in that tone and voice for the entire film.

Add in that repeated and prolonged exposure to encompassing settings (people who dig a lot dreaming of digging, long distance runners on the wind-up for a big event the likewise) can induce certain dreams. your brain can bring up some seriously wild things at times and for a surprisingly long time if left uninterrupted (literal flap your arms and fly or jump around then pause mid-air kind of stuff) . Something like a long weekend binging a series/movie-franchise/atmospheric-game can trigger this but a broken up day is far less likely to do so (wake, commute, work, walk while eating, more work, evening chill n eat, sleep far less likely to have a similar effect unless you are mid project/crunch and living the work for a while.

@@gonnahavemesomefun Isn't that the point though? It's at this moment that he realizes his true powers and loses his fear of the agents. He realizes that he can now fight and even beat Smith without even breaking a sweat. That he doesn't even need to use both his arms. That he doesn't even need to face or look at him. At this point it's not a fight anymore, it's just him testing out what he can do. Yeah the Sequels really nerfed the fuck out of Neo. At the end of this movie, he becomes a god-like being who sets out to tear down the entire system, but they retconned it with Reloaded sadly. They should've probably just made one more film where we see Neo freeing everyone and the Machines reacting/responding to that.

Five things communicate that Neo can now shape the Matrix as he sees fit: 1) He stops the bullets. The bullets are outside of his body, so rather than just having power over his own person, his own avatar in this environment, he can clearly influence what's happening outside of it. 2) He sees the Matrix in code. This heavily implies he can now write that code himself. 3) He effortlessly defeats an agent. Agents "guard[ed] all the doors and [held] all the keys". Neo now guards all the doors and holds all the keys. 4) He invades Smith's body and takes it over. Again, Neo can rewrite any code in the Matrix, at will. 5) The entire hallway bends as he flexes. Again, Neo controls the Matrix. The Matrix is now his play thing, which he can alter at whim. The sequels had to heavily retcon everything that happened in this scene because, for all intents and purposes, Neo at this point is God of the Matrix. The traditional story, in which a protagonist must struggle against meaningful challenges and overcome them, would not have worked because Neo is now beyond all of that. They could have told a different kind of story, but they weren't willing to do that. In my view, it was a mistake to make a sequel. This story was perfectly executed, from start to finish, and there was nothing to add to Neo's arc.

Every iteration of "The One" has always been a glitch in the Matrix, like a virus in the system that does not adhere to any of the system protocols. I see this scene as Neo's death in the matrix and motivation in the real world from Trinity at the same time is what triggered the glitch to work. You know how like in games you'd have to do a certain set of things to trigger a glitch...

Damm you're smartass
@davidkelly42103 жыл бұрын
He's less a glitch and more a patch. The Matrix always failed, they couldn't figure it out at 1st. Eventually they realized it was a mathematical inevitability in the code that couldn't be fixed without totally rewriting the Matrix and it caused a server crashed when reached. So they created a program, Neo, to preempt the crash. His program would activate when the crash neared and he'd be able to unplug anyone he wanted from the Matrix so when the crash happened, there'd still be a human population left. The Machines would wipe out the existing human population so nobody would be left that truly understood what was happening (I suspect this action could be avoided if the humans didn't always go to war with the machines). Some of the humans Neo freed would be plugged back into the Matrix (Neo included as his code allowed the Matrix to last longer in the subsequent version, this is why he has total access to the code) when it reset to repopulate it. The rest would be allowed to repopulate the real world because, unlike Skynet, human extinction isn't the goal. The trilogy takes place in the 6th version of the Matrix using the Neo patch.
@huejass33 жыл бұрын
@@davidkelly4210 i think you're pretty much spot on with your interpretation. Maybe i'm misreading it but from my understanding the machines never intended for the anomaly that is Neo, so instead they integrated his inevitable emergence into the system. That the machines never intended to reboot the matrix but they had no choice because of Neo. (Hence why they tried to track him down) The architects method of control was to provide Neo with a choice, which all previous 5 versions decided to save Zion which the machines intended. But the 6th version in the movies chose to go back into the matrix to save Trinity because if his love for her which the architect didn't expect, and in doing so Neo essentially upgraded himself and brought with him the "source code" into the matrix, which explains his wireless control of the sentinels when he returned to the real world.
@Lithium_GI3 жыл бұрын
@@davidkelly4210 Wow, very interesting to hear your take! Even after watching the movie like 20+ times I am still learning stuff. But I have to agree with @Daniel S on this one. My understanding is that the machines did not intend for the anomaly as well. They tried to balance the "equation" as much as they could but there was always a "remainder" or a mathematical anomaly that they could not account for (The one). The machines needed to stop him because, left unchecked, this anomaly will destroy the matrix and free all the humans plugged in. So what could they do? They cannot beat him IN the matrix because he does not adhere to the rules of the system so the way they found AROUND this was to create a situation that would force the one to make a choice. The death of the entire human race or to pick some humans from the matrix and restart Zion from scratch. From what I understand, the previous versions of "The one" all chose to restart Zion with handpicked humans from the Matrix. But only in this version its different because of Neo's love for trinity. The machines did not expect this because the machines don't understand love and think that the code of someone in love is very similar to someone who is insane (i.e. irrational, not logical).
@simons.60294 жыл бұрын
I love the moment when Neo turns his head and says "No" - because: I see The Matrix as a metaphor - among many metaphors, by the way - of human being's capability to look beyond what is presented to them. The matrix is in many ways a representation of the "veil” of reality put in front of us - we all live in so many "constructs"/conceptual realities, as Eckhart Tolle puts it, which we all walk around and believe in - they can have tremendous consequences for our mental wellbeing and perception of the world. A person in a political party will see the world in one way. A person working the high-end coporate world will see his/her career, image and prestige as EVERYTHING worth to him/her (exagerating, but you know what I'm talking about). A person will let others' opinions affect him/her, because he/she thinks they matter. When Neo says "No", he states that he refuses to let the bullets hit him - the bullets being this "veil” reality's attempt to affect him (kill him, in the movie) - but Neo knows it's all a lie - like the conceptual reality/veil I mentioned in examples before. Also, the line that he becomes "the one" means, the way I interpret it, that he becomes himself/oneself - he becomes who HE IS, regardless of what the fake world around him tries to tell him - he becomes who he wants to become. But this wasn't possible without love - love to himself. This is brought to him by Trinity - she whispers words of love to him in his ear - but he can't hear her, because his mind is trapped in the matrix - instead, these words is perceived by Neo as metaphysical words inside his mind, as he lies, "dead", in the matrix - he is only dead, because he allows himself to be killed in the matrix/affected by the fake world's attempt to hurt him. The fact that trinity shows affection and love to Neo indirectly makes Neo love himself for who he is - which creates courage - which leads to him BELIEVING in himself - which leads to him saying "No" to the fake world - and thus, becomes the one - the oneself. It works together with the time in the movie, where Neo asks Morpheus: "So what are you saying - I can dodge bullets?" where to Morpheus replies "When the time comes, you don't have to". Neo doesn't have to dodge the bullets - he just doesn't acknowledge that they are there - thereby he doesn't need to dodge them - because they are not there. The Matrix is a movie about waking up and realising what is real and what is not, and lets one ask oneself "What is a construct in my mind, which affects my perception of reality, and what is ACTUAL reality?" If one can realize the contructs, one can see beyond them, and begin to live in the world as it actually is - and one can become the true oneself, without having the fake affect one. I love this interpretation - it's something I've thought about, after having watched a lot of Eckhart Tolle, but I think it applies very well to the overall notion of the movie - it's a lot about our human ability to love, to believe and to stand up for one self against adversity and the fake. My favorite movie :)

@simons.60294 жыл бұрын
M yeah, well, off course there are real things around us - but many of them are made up in our mind, like the example’s I listed. Your reality is what you choose to perceive/what you have accepted as reality. We all die some day - but you don’t have to feel sad about something in your life - you choose to feel sad, because you have, maybe subconsciously, decided that you should feel sad about something - this is the conceptual reality I’m thinking about, and what I see the matrix in the movie as a metaphor for - Neo says NO to the conceptual reality set up by the machines, and decides to not let it affect him - that’s the power of the One in the movie - the one who has the capability to realize this an live by it. (SPOILER ALERT) in the third movie Neo dies, in the real world in the machine city - so yes, this is reality - but when he’s plugged in he doesn’t have to accept the set up boundaries/rules of the conceptual reality which the matrix is.

Philosophers and scientists who don't believe in God have assumed that we are living in a matrix that we are may be a video game of some higher species. Maybe we all are just a highly programmed software with minds of our own. But the main thing to realise is to not be nihilist about it . Just like superman a fictional character can be inspiring to us humans similarly we humans can be for our higher beings for whom we may be only a virtual reality.That is why in every religion it is said that we are ' servers '. @@winstonsmith8937 Neo was The "Sixth" One.... his decisions to save Trinity over the lives of others came not only from his love for her but also from what he learned from The Architect about the cycle of Matrix reboots and the inevitable destruction and reconstruction of Zion. HAD Neo had the same attachment to ALL life that the other Ones had he wouldn't have changed anything. His decisions revolved around the conflict of choice. Free will vs Fate. His decision to defy his "role" by not returning to the source and freeing "the first of us" as Morpheus once told Neo of the Original One led to true Freedom not only for those in Zion but also those remaining in The Matrix who "wanted out"

The first shot was pretty interesting because I feel like this is the moment that precipitated the transition to the one. When he got shot, he reacted as if he didn't feel it, as if he was registering properly on what just happened. Then the following shots happen and he reacts normally as if the idea of getting shot is only being felt after he understood that was the natural reaction. Then as Trinity does her thing and he realizes "oh crap, these shots DON'T HAVE TO MATTER" and the rest is history.

I'm already 20 and the first time I watched The Matrix was when I was about 9 or 10. Neo, Apoc, and Switch were my favorites and when I saw Apoc and Switch die cause of Cypher, I was upset. But this part where Neo dies made me shed tears cause Neo's my most favorite and when Neo died I said, "No! Not Neo too!!!" I couldn't watch anymore after that. But after Trinity kissed him, my stepdad said, "Look kiddo." While he was smiling and when it showed Neo opening his eyes, I was both shocked and happy. And I said, "He's alive!!!" And when the agents were shooting at him, I got all worried and said, "Neo!!!" But when he stopped the bullets, I said, "Whoa! How did he do that?!" Then my stepdad said, "He's the one." At the same exact time Morpheus said it. This was the part where Neo became my most favorite on The Matrix
