One underappreciated detail of these movies I've begun to notice is the fighting style of all of the characters and this scene captures it perfectly. Most of the Agent's moves are straight punches and kicks, while they still fight intelligently their attacks are all power and technique, no fancy flips, spins, twists or anything extravagant, he doesn't even have a "fighting stance", he simply just walks up to Morpheus and gets straight to business. They fight in the most efficient and effective possible way, exactly like how you would expect a machine to fight. Morpheus on the other hand does all kind of creative moves and techniques that completely contrasts the Agent's, from the headscissor throw to the jumping knee to the gun disarm, all of which seem to catch the Agent by surprise as Agent's most likely consider those kinds of moves to be too unnecessary or unorthodox to attempt in a serious life or death fight. Adaptation and Improvisation are always seen if not encouraged in martial arts and is perfectly illustrated with Morpheus holding his own against the Agent. Details like these are what makes these movies so great and timeless.

Yes, the combat is a metaphor for a hacker attacking a computer program. A computer relies on its strength and durability, which a human cant match. Something I’ve always wondered: Did Morpheus level up between the first and second films? In the first Matrix Agent Smith manhandled him easily, in this he kind of holds his own. Is there something in his character arc that accounts for this? Edit 1/9/21: Thanks for the great responses. Opinion seems to break down along two main lines: 1. Smith was always a more formidable opponent even when he was still an Agent, and, 2. Morpheus probably trained with Neo between Matrix 1 and 2 and improved his Agent-busting / also the emergence of the One punctured the Agents’ aura of invincibility and made fighting them seem more achievable.

I guess Morpheus applied the same principle of "He is begining to believe", but to Neo and the things the meeting of The One meant for the war against the machines. The hope Neo gave into his life that maybe he wasn't so pointless after all, like other operators and redpills may feel against the machines, the Matrix and shit, made him stand up against every odd the Matrix presented in front of him. That's why at the ending of the first one, when Neo is believed to be dead and reborns into The One, he is minutes away of being killed by the Squiddy and he just looks defeated, but he cheers up after hearing of Neo's waking up and defeating Smith. The same happens on Revolutions, when Neo is indecisive about what to do next and all the high command of Zion hold him saying that they don't believe in the prophecy like Morpheus does, and that they will loose the war against the machines. I don't know, that's what I've always thought about Morpheus character development.

The agent Smith is way different than the other agents because he never was predictable, and morpheus has learned a lot thanks to Neo, and even with all of this morpheus could still be killed fighting that agent but situation was dynamic enough to give him the advantage.

That Agent's priority was to delete the Keymaker but the hacker that he encountered was Morpheus - the same one that was captured in the first movie. @@maxmercurythemm827 That thought of yours is a mechanism to help you cope with the contradiction of a red pill kicking an UPGRADED Agent's ass. In reality, the Agent was nerfed on purpose. In the 1st movie a regular Agent didn’t have the least trouble in dealing with Morpheus. And now suddenly out of nowhere Morpheus can hit several times an Agent that can even stop some of Neo’s attacks. Ridiculous. That the Agent didn’t took out his gun (the bullets of which Morpheus can't evade) until Morpheus was one meter away goes to prove the "upgraded" Agent was ironically weakened on purpose for this scene.

The Matrix is an action classic but Reloaded is very underrated, it’s such an amazing and memorable action movie, so many iconic fight scenes and one of the best “chase scenes” in any movie. I remember the trailer blowing me away when it came out, the movie itself was a mixed bag, but the action scenes are just as amazing as the original for me.
@BogusLion2 жыл бұрын
I don't know where is the "mixed bag", the movie is awesome. My favourite of the series, everything is great and awesome, great story arch, and trinity is so sexy on this movie, Carrie Ann moss was on her prime, just like all the other actors.
@tacosmexicanstyle78462 жыл бұрын
@@BogusLion the ‘mixed bag’ is about the inconsistent pacing of the film; a large portion of the first half takes place in Zion. People just weren’t that interested in Zion, and the constant reinforcing and revisiting of the same philosophical themes was tedious (machines rely on us, determinism, there is no choice). All of it makes sense by the end when the story finally comes together in the convoluted architect scene… but for two hours up until that moment, the story doesn’t feel cohesive or like it’s going anywhere. It’s a great film to rewatch but I can see why people didn’t like it at the time. Take the Merovingian scene for example… that’s like 10 minutes of him ranting about determinism. We spent the whole first film being told that choice matters (blue pill, red pill) so we don’t understand how Merovingian’s ranting is important until it’s revealed by the architect that the choice is just an illusion in a broader system of control.

I like how we can see that Morpheus has gotten more skilled since the first movie when he basically got bloodied up by Smith. In this one, even with upgrades, Morpheus was holding his own much better than he did against Smith in the first movie. The Matrix was amazing due to it being a very clean movie and having the greatest impact. The Matrix Reloaded has the biggest scale and most large-scale fight scenes. It let you see how Neo and the others could really fight if needed, with things like the highway scene, dealing with the French Man, even fighting all of the clones - all being quite epic, even if the CGI isn't always perfect. The Matrix Revolutions had the largest stakes and some absolutely impressive CGI battles for the time, but did lose out in martial arts, and the final fight - while it had a huge impact for me overall - definitely wasn't as enjoyable. Seeing people just fly around to fight wasn't as interesting as seeing them fight on the ground and use guns and weapons and such. Though I personally enjoyed all three of them, and the Animatrix which fills in a lot of things and adds some neat little extra content. Hated the Matrix Resurrections though. Really wanted to enjoy it, but it lacked a cohesive plot, spent half the time on bad nostalgia jokes, and the other half rehashing the original trilogy in a worse way. Kinda reminds me of the new Star Wars trilogy - worse than the Original Trilogy by far in terms of overall execution and plot, worse than the Prequel Trilogy by far in terms of actually adding to the world and introducing characters, and so on.

@@jtonxbox1433 that's because it literally was a romance. Resurrection is the way it is because they told Lana that if she didn't make a fourth installment to the story she finished, they'd give it to the guy who made Ready Player One and it would be yet another generic nostalga remake that tries to do all the stuff above and probably fails miserably at all of it, because Hollywood has been trying to recapture the feel of the Matrix for two decades now. So instead, she made herself some fan fiction that gave Neo and Trinity a happy ending, and made Warner Brothers pay for it, and I love it. The Matrix 4 was never going to be what the old ones were, they existed in the zietgiest of a moment two decades behind us. I'm glad the fourth one decided to be something else, and I really liked it for itself.

The Merovingian fight is amazingly well done. But you had the (unfortunate) recasting of the oracle. And the huge cliff hanger type ending just leaves a lot of audiences unhappy. It doesn't hold its own as a movie because its just a piece of a story. Where as the first movie can stand alone, this one NEEDS the other two to work. The agent has no thought of losing or urgency, he would have opened fire on the key maker, either way what happened was one of the best sets in the second in my opinion.

Man, Daniel Bernhardt doesn't get nearly enough appreciation as a stunt man and martial artist. He was great in this fight.

So awesome to see Morpheus so quick on his feet, and using them to kick the crap out of the upgraded Agent. This fight scene gets better and better with each watch.

I tell you man, Laurence Fishburne just nailed it. I'm big fan of Keanu Reeves, but Morpheus is way ahead

People say the CGI elements are not good but this was 2003 and they are better than a lot of the films we see today. The Smith fight and this scene are amazing.
