The maniacal laughter after the line "I'm glad you're dead!" really reinforces how he has changed from Jack Napier to Joker, and his barely holding his new self in during the meeting was brilliant.

TheBlues32 what’s wrong with making him the one responsible for killing Batman’s parents? I thought this a very good change. And what’s wrong with giving the joker a definitive backstory? Remember, this is just a movie and it’s not canon with the comics so it really shouldn’t matter if he has a backstory. Also it makes sense he was a bad person before falling into the chemicals, because just getting their skin bleached isn’t enough reason for a normal person to become a psychopathic murderer. He was a horrible person to begin with; just falling into the chemicals pushed him over the edge. I’m not trying to be rude with this comment, just stating my opinion

@UC47dtKlSIVeIy7R-HOaK8Sg Well, for one thing, that makes him a good ten years plus older than Batman. Jack Nicholson already looked too old for the part, this just drives it home. Jack Nicholson’s Joker is a grossly underrated interpretation of the character and doesn’t get anywhere near as much credit or acclaim as it deserves. For a character that has a rich history of incredible portrayals, both on screen and voiceover, this performance is often overlooked in favour of Heath Ledger and more recently, Joaquin Phoenix. They’re all incredible performances in their own right!
@ImreNagyM2 жыл бұрын
see i think the problem is; this movie cam out when the main villains started to become smart or smarter than the hero. like Hans in Die Hard. so Joker (Jack) here was a somewhat “toy” villain, making him misfit for the era. Films started to add layers to their characters, and joker in this movie has only one layer: destroying everything but mainly the Batman. now Ledger’s Joker came out where the layers of the villain and hero are at almost at peak, but we started to show how crazy the real world is. so they became a kind of critique of society. And Ledger’s joker delivers that layer too. that famous interrogation where he is frank about how everyone turns inside out at the first sign of chaos. altough he retained some of the Joker’s “its about the message” sort of function, it is simply much more like an Ogre and onion… it smells bad and makes people cry… and has more layers :) Joaquin makes it even further and this time we are truly about how the world is a joker on its own right… how cruelty and selfishnes turned most of people the joker … and him … he just admits it. now i would say Jack’s Joker is true to the comics of the time, and since his drive is not to show the the world how bad they are, he is proper evil and a classic villain. and that is scary. but his underrated performance was mainly down to the badly timed release / as in the industry moved to a different direction. regardless: its a great movie and superb a cting, so i am not talking it down. just similar what happened to Windows Vista in 2006. Microsoft anticipated that CPUs will run around 6-7-8 GHZ … but what happened is, we were barely running on 2 but we had multiple cores… which the vista kernel just could not take andvantage of. if this movie comes out a few years prior, i am sure Jack would have even got an Oscar for this.

Just because someone like Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero or others doesn't mean Jack Nicholson's Joker is underrated. First and foremost it's Jack Nicholson. It's taking Joker and putting that character up against the actors best. Burtons Batman movie has done so much to the Batman character portrayal/writing sense that it's just a different discussion. Everyone is compared to Nicholson's joker. Ledger especially was. If there is ever a serious discussion about the Joker, Nicholson isn't getting skipped.

This joker scene was by far the most creepiest and disturbing of any other joker in cinema. Talking to a freshly burned corpse that must smell horrific and Nicholsons Joker just taking it all in and loving it.
@BillyBob-ec5ox Жыл бұрын
To me, this is one of the most disturbing scenes in cinema history, of any genre. But ironically, hilarious at the same time, and masterfully acted. A strange, rare combo. It is somewhat comparable to the real life Cadaver Synod, where a Pope’s corpse was put on trial by the current, living Pope. I would imagine that this scene shocked a lot of people at the time when it came out, being in a Batman film....and what people typically expected from Batman. This was outright horror.

Let's talk about the science of joker laugh, the only person in this planet who can do a perfect laugh as a joker is Jack Nicholson, so real so natural, especially in the scene where he electrocuted the mob, he has a natural long breath, that's why the laughter sounds so good, that wheezing sound like people with asthma is so hard to do if you don't have that naturally, also listen to the laugh after joker push batman and vicki vale off the building, it's so f$&king delicious and satisfying to listen to especially if you listen through earphones, so haunting and joyful, sorry to say but Heath ledger failed at that, he's just "woohh.. haha", except Joaquin Phoenix(great), the rest of them are so fake and forceful, they have to scream to get the joker's laugh, for example Mark Hamill, quite cringe and anoying actually, the laugh was perfectly illustrated by Nicholson by having a set of laughs that range from maniacal and gleefully wild to dark and deeply threatening that sounds natural

@@Avrelivs_Gold I disagree. Heath Ledger's Joker was MUCH more than just a crazy street thug. That you don't see that tells me you really didn't pay attention to or understand the character. Crazy street thugs don't set up elaborate schemes to rob a Mob bank successfully while killing all the co-conspirators and walking away alone with the cash scot-free. They don't set up elaborate schemes to turn the District Attorney into a madman hell-bent on killing Gordon's kid. I originally thought this scene was done by having Nicholson use the handkerchief to wipe some white makeup onto his face to give the illusion, but no. The makeup team actually applied two layers of makeup to Nicholson in every scene throughout the movie that shows this; the joker skin makeup, then put a protective layer of wax (iirc) over that, then the fake skin makeup. Which is why the fake skin makeup realistically washes/wipes off throughout the film and achieves the look of actually looking like fake skin makeup, because it is. Phenomenal makeup department work that really should have gotten recognition.

Joker's mastery of disguise is an aspect of the character I wish people didn't forget about. Realistically, someone with his distinct appearance and complexion would have to disguise themselves when they're out and about so as not to instantly get recognized. The only problem I had with Tim Burton's Batman films is that he didn't stay true to the source material in one way that matters: Batman never intentionally kills someone, and never killed the Joker, even on accident. He always apprehends the Joker and puts him in police custody. Him intentionally grappling Joker's leg to the stone gargoyle, causing the latter to fall to his death, was a black mark on the film, as that's something Batman would NEVER do.
@Paraprax4 жыл бұрын
The 'glad your dead' scene is particularly amazing because we're seeing the Joker alone, truly being himself. He's not performing. He's not faking the laugh like Ledger(who we only ever see in scenes with other characters, to whom he has something to prove). We're watching the actual Joker laugh about his destructive, spiraling plans for the city now that he can't be a regular crime boss like he'd planned, due to his disfigurement, and just wants to desperately find art while running the recognizable world into the ground.

Nicholson will always be my favorite Joker. He's actually funny. No, he was hilarious actually in certain parts. Heath Ledger was more like the Joker if he was in real life and was just over the top psycho. His famous line "why so serious " literally applied to him but it's apples to oranges. Both were the best in their own way. Not to take anything away from either of them.

That's a professional; The silk handkerchief wouldn't stay in his pocket so he dumps it off camera with his left hand so it wouldn't spoil the dialog exchange with his henchman. Good job, Jack.

uhh u mean it took it off to wipe for someresson makeup on his forehead?
@MrParkerman64 жыл бұрын
In real life he wiped white makeup from the rag on his forhead, but in the scene he is supposed to be removing Tan Makeup that he used to cover up his now white, pale face that was the result of him falling into the acid.
@JimmyFoxhound4 жыл бұрын
@@MrParkerman6 Actually that's not true, Jack actually does have the white makup on in the scene. They lightly covered the whiter makeup with skin color so Jack could then wipe it off. It's really interesting. They talk about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ-XhZqsqcepfsU

I not afraid to say, Nicholsons joker has always been my favorite, Ledger and Phoenix were great for that kind of role, but this Joker has always been the perfect balance. Insane, completely unstable and calculating every move the whole time, more recent jokers have just been to focused on the violence and not enough on the clown side.
