And that pride was born from actually, physically, building the sets, props, special effects, really blowing things up, going on location -- all tangible human -created things, instead of everything being created via AI, CGI, and filmed on an empty soundstage with nothing more than giant green screens... Personally, I blame George Lucas He sold out to the digital technology in 1999 with The Phantom Menace, setting the precedent... He made a fortune for himself off his talented film crews' amazing innovations in the previous Star Wars movies; now he was putting them all out of work...

Films like that need a certain kind of person at the helm otherwise they simply don't happen. A taskmaster who doesn't require sleep, with a single directive, and zero fucks to give is litterally their best hope. I think anything from the mid 60s through to the early 80s was best. By the early 60s they knew all the tricks to making big widescreen larger than life epic movies but without any CGI or greeen screens and only rudimentary front and rear projection, everything had to be done "for real" so to speak. As of today, no CGI that I have ever seen can even remotely compete with having to create the effect physically on the scene in the real world. Not even remotely close. To be honest most movies these days are about as exciting as a cut scene from a second rate video game and look about as realistic too.

Both the practical effects AND CGI were great in this movie. When Terminator 2 launched everyone was enthused about the liquid metal CGI, ^_^. It was soooo cool. Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 are why you saw a T-Rex on the PlayStation demo disc, or in that early stage of Tomb Raider, and the Dural unveil for Virtua Fighter 3 featuring liquid metal - or the Metal Suit in Mario 64 - there was an obsession to bring these fantastic movie visuals from Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park home, and the games industry wanted to catch up to these inspiring effects we saw in these masterpieces in the cinema. The 90s was a hugely exciting time. From the SAM Coupé to the Dreamcast. From Teletext to Internet Broadband. =).
@kwhi8210 ай бұрын
@ajmetz82 Agreed. The CGI they did use was tastefully done and not overused compared to movies today. Jurassic Park and T2 were absolutely revolutionary in regards to the combination of practical and CGI 💯. It was great being a kid in the 90s!

@jonathanparle842911 ай бұрын
@@JustinLodes Somehow back in the early 90s despite the lack of computing power they still managed to pull off better effects than today when there is endless computing power to throw at effects. I agree with you - it is the passion and skill of those behind the cameras far more than the tools they have to play with. Plus those guys still working in the 90s came from the old school backgrounds of having to do everything "for real". The current generation of behind the scenes movie makers often never even need to get out of their chairs and spend all day at the computer screen. I can't even think of any movie made after the mid 90s that I would even want to bother watching more than once, yet I come back to all these epic films made from the early 60s to mid 90s all the time.

@CrAzYpotpie11 ай бұрын
This is also a really weird comment, as T2 is widely known to have expanded heavily on the toolset they had to produce state or the art CGI. These same tools grew into what we know of today as Maya and 3DS Max, tools used for countless movies and video games. So yeah, extremely short sighted. It's not like his point is entirely wrong, but when it comes to this movie, it couldn't be more wrong.
@nebularain333811 ай бұрын
What makes you think that VFX creation isn't hard work? Have you ever been on a crunch as part of a VFX team and slept on the floor for a month? Also, Fury Road had a shit ton of CGI. The hills, dust, and even some cars were literally all computer generated, but you didn't notice that becasue you assumed it was all practical as it looked amazing. I'd advise you to watch this series and maybe put down the view that practical is always superior to CGI. kzbin.info/www/bejne/baXXeGxmp8Z2hNEsi=pJ5cjxJjv3SUKCd5

@@CrAzYpotpie Nah, you missed the point. When at all possible, real shadows, real environments take priority. Yes, they created CGI later from this but it's a last resort and only when needed. The newer version of Dune won awards because while they had to use computers to models ships and planets, they went out of their way to film real environment and shadows, light, color. So you missed the point. Most studios like Marvel do the opposite and will green screen and CGI everything.
