I know. How could Bezos or Musk not get into golf, buy a castle in Scotland and find £1000M behind the sofa to throw at a football club? We need some Scottish honeytrapper to make that happen. It's a weird football culture, to be honest. 90% of the attention is on two clubs. Without some rich benefactor taking a Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen or similar and just burning money on them then I don't see how any club breaks the monopoly. They'd need to produce an entire team of kids who are already a level above the pros they have.

Not only did he fight his way back from getting Guillain-Barré syndrome and came back stronger than ever, he' s also received the Olympic Commitee Fair Play award. I can't help wonder though, if he wouldn't have ended up playing for one of the better mid-level teams in the English Premier League, if he hadn't become sick just when he was reaching his prime, because his playing style was perfect for the English game at the time.

Man, this brings back so many memories! I think what one of the journos said about Barnes being ahead of his time in regard to formation and system is possibly true. This was a time the general perception of football in the British Isles were firmly rooted in, quoting a famous manager, "four four fucking two". Anything else was deemed sacrilege. Even Glenn Hoddle received a lot of flak for playing 3 at the back during his England days. Some would argue that system style managers have never truly been accepted as such, remember the vitriol Sarri received at Chelsea? He was just as stubborn as Barnes was. It is odd that Barnes never went on to another managerial role. He certainly had the talent.

Although Barnes was obviously out of his depth, a lot of the players need to look at themselves too. I always found Berkovic to be an irritating wee fanny with a god-awful attitude, and Ian Wright's attitude wisnae much better - "wouldn't it be fun to have a bit of a laff and a joke in old jockoland to finish my career? Play at 50%, have a laff, and show the jocks how it's done. Nice easy little earner before I put my feet up". The other story about Wright is that on the pitch he was constantly telling opposition defenders how much money he had and how they should be lucky to be on the same pitch as him. Wee prick who's time at Celtic was mercifully short.

Barnes, apart from his obvious issues (If you've ever spoken to him on twitter you will know what those are) had the same problem coming to Scotland as Ronnie Delia did, he totally underestimated the standard of player required for a club like Celtic never mind for clubs in the Scottish league, Oliver "Bombscare" Tebily is a prime example, Berkovic was touted as some world beater "He's from the EPL" 32 app 9 goals in 2 years, cost an absolute fortune for fk all and got papped out the door by MoN. Raphael "Scheidt" Scheidt. Barnes ego is what's to blame for Barnes failure as a manager. From the Celtic Wiki “Barnes does not help his own image with an affected smartness which impresses as mere pseudo-intelligence, accompanied by the supercilious posturing once favoured by the “boxer”, Chris Eubank (anyone who knows anything about the fight game will recall that he wasn’t very good, either). Whenever Barnes answers a pre- or post-match question with one of his own, it is clearly intended somehow to highlight the inferior knowledge or competence of the interrogator. Instead, he succeeds simply in making himself appear infantile and implausible, his replies at times as unfathomable as the spiel of an old-time, travelling snake oil salesman. In essence, Barnes, like his team, tends to lack substance.” Respected journalist Glenn Gibbons on John Barnes (2000) “People call me stubborn/arrogant before even knowing me….” Then goes in the same interview later: “You’ll never change my mind ever!” John Barnes (2020)
