Wow. This is the best illustration and explanation of flashing on KZbin and I’ve watched over a dozen of these. Thank you, thank you so much.

Just WOW! I cannot believe this doesn't have more comments. This is Flashing for Dummies! lol. And I needed it. I just had to have an old deck, leger and rim joist replaced. My deck guy wasn't going to use a protective moisture barrier between the new rim joist and new leger. I am going to have show him this video. His final projects look amazing, but why would he not suggest to the customer the need for the moisture protection? He said he installs it upon the customer request. But I don't think the average homeowner would know to ask for it. THANKS for this awesome short tutorial.

How do you feel about deck, spacers, and not flashing over the ledger at all?
@GlennMathewson9 ай бұрын
They have a place. I wrote all new ledger flashing codes for the 2024 IRC that were approved. They directly recognize spaced ledgers without flashing. I’ll be making a video soon.

Thanks! I don't know why nobody has information on flashing a deck ledger. Maybe because most do it wrong or don't know how. This was very helpful.

Based on the illustration at 7:30, how bad is my mistake? I installed the self-adhesive membrane without tucking any of it under the housewrap. 1) Intact housewrap > Membrane > Ledger board with L-Flashing on top that is just behind the Hardie cement siding.
@GlennMathewson2 жыл бұрын
The illustrations are just published ideas. This is an older video. Keeping your house wrap intact is not a bad thing. I would not worry if I were you. Flashing details in the code are being discussed this year for the 2024 code edition..

Why not wrap the entire ledger board in the membrane?

My contractor didnt added membrane beyond the ledger or on the ledger and he only added aluminium flashing only..does it create lot of damage in future...? If so how can be it avoided....he just finished framing still not added deck material

Wow...great stuff Glenn! I appreciate the comments on the Pockets of Debris and have been fighting rot from just that..for 20 years. I have yet to resolve it to any great degree, so if anyone has any great ideas on how to "best avoid" this problem...please let me know! Good references also...thanks for all.

Hi Glenn. Many thanks. I noticed that many people are now wrapping the top of the deck ledger and joists with a flashing tape before a metal / plastic flashing above that. What are your thoughts?

The cation anion exchange is an interesting bit. Curious: at 4:36 it sounds as though it is being suggested that HDG is actually MORE corrosion resistant than SS? This wasn't my understanding. Is this just an error in phrasing? It'd also be interesting to touch on the issue of mixing HDG with SS hardware, in this context.
@GlennMathewson5 жыл бұрын
Spruce_Goose yeah... I see what you mean about how I phrased that. No, I was not meaning to say that HDG is more corrosion resistant than SS. I was just trying to explain the irony that zinc is more corrosive and thus by corroding first ends up protecting the steel it coats. Wild stuff! Thanks for your comment.

Complicated question: I have an extended (1ft protrude out from house frame) sliding door frame that is 7’ wide leading out to the deck with a ledger 7’ long to match that width. The deck is 16’ wide so the old builder attached another 16’ rim joist to the 7’ ledger with 2 posts on the side to support the 4.5’ non-ledgered on both sides. My real question is, how do you flash this 3” double stacked ledger (from two 2x8 stacked)? Most metal flashings are 1 1/2” width and those that extend out doesn’t come drip. Can you actually cut the flashing and membrane tape it together to drip over the 16’ rim joist?

Most sheet metal shops will make you custom flashing.

Great information I am redoing my deck and the builder did not stall flashing when they installed the ledger board to the house, anyway around this or do I have to remove the ledger board?
@11soWoo4 жыл бұрын
You could remove the closest deck piece to the ledger and flash it but I’m more worried about what’s behind the ledger. Take it out and see if it rot. Call your city building code for an inspector to come out and see the condition of the rot. If it looks good, then you are at peace.

I have a deck that is flush to a concrete patio and the builder failed to put flashing on the ledger board. Now the ledger board and some of the deck boards are rotting. Looks like a major undertaking to repair!

how can flashing be installed on a deck ledger over cultured stone if the deck builder didn't do it initially
@jimk53076 жыл бұрын
Dennis Drayer that stinks. Best to gently remove lowest course of stone and add the flashing. Painful when they don’t do I correctly the first time.
