I have always had issues keeping flashlights working on a sailboat I bet you do too. Probably no light will work forever in this environment but I was recently given a pair to evaluate and I have to say I'm very presently surprised.
If you'd like to take a look at their collection you can follow this link. The light I chose was the perun 2 with headstrap.

This is got to be the number one underrated sailing KZbin channel out. Between the two of them they know more than any other KZbin, or at least are willing to share it yet this video doesn’t even have 9000 views. Hopefully things are changing and things will take off.

Great video. OLight, Fenix, and Sunwayman are my go-to brands now. Expensive but worth it. Stay away from anything that requires C or D batteries. I have a couple of pen lights that take AA or AAA and they are handy for EDC. Lithium is the way to go. 10 year shelf life if stored. Or you can go rechargeable via USB. That's a great headlamp that OLight gave you. Should last for many years. ETA: I also think having some of those el-cheapo Harbor Freight lights is a great idea. You can abuse those without having to cry when they fall in the water or break.

I have that exact same O light which I used in my motorhome. It's been the best torch (I'm a Brit) I have ever owned. Love the brightness options, the wide spread, the ease of charging and the duration it lasts at lower intensities. The head strap makes for easy use walking at night or working on something that needs 2 hands. I think you'll be happy for a long time to come, although I've never used it in a tropical or salty environment.

My favorite flashlight is my Milwaukee M18 Search Light (2354-20) always have plenty of tool batteries laying around fully charged. It really sheds some light on the situation at 1250 lumens in spot/flood mode. But boy howdy it was expensive at over $100 for just the light.

The two I’ve had for 7 years is the Petzel Tikka R+ headlamp (rechargeable, auto bright mode, l/m/h select mode, red mode, water resistant), and the Fenix UC35 flashlight (ipx68, single 1865, five bright modes up to 1000 lumens, strobe, has a clip and wrist strap, and rated to be mounted on a firearm). Both easily charge from solar, and never have had to buy batteries for them since initial purchasing(3years left I’m guessing).

I'm just an armchair boat admirer and I can say that I have flashlights everywhere around the house. I typically carry a flashlight on me when I leave home. Even in mid day if you are in a large shopping center it can get very dark if the power goes out. I also carry them has less than lethal deterrents. Loved the video and this topic covers many "other" areas of life that we all share. The thing I like about the olight is clipping it low on your body if you are walking. It cast shadows and you can see the contour of the ground if you are hiking.

Flashlight is a strange term. I guess it was coined because people made Morse in light. In UK we call them torches. In Sweden it is a ficklampa (pocket light). I find almost all Chinese torches are very nicely made, but their switches always fail. You can rely on them failing ! I guess down there in that sunny place you don't often wear oilskins. Up here in Europe we do, especially at night. A great tip for deck work like sail changes at night, is to have a small torch lit inside an oilskin pocket. It makes a useful working glow that doesn't knock out anyone's night vision.

Thanks, Clark, for this video. This one really hit home.. I was given my first Olight by my son years ago, and have never bought another brand since. Also, EVERYTHING for the boat gets a shot of Fluid Film, which will keep even the throw-away flashlights working for years. Another trick, I store things like flashlights in Ziploc freezer bags; they don't add as much bulk as watertight containers.

Nice review. I've had multiple flashlights fail in the last six months, usually alkaline batteries by corroding the terminals. Lately I've purchased some flashlights powered by 18650 batteries, but time will tell how long they last in the marine environment. That Oilite, without a power receptical, seems like a good idea to avoid entry of water vapor. Regarding brightness of LED lights, the "whiteness" is deceptive. I have an old airplane that had incandescent bulbs and I replaced one with an LED light and did some test landings on a dark night, switching each on off and on on final approach. The incandescent light actually illuminated the runway slightly earlier than the LED lamp (but not enough earlier that I didn't switch to LEDs--my alternator loves them.) These were 3.5 amp LEDs so are pretty bright. The 12v (14v PAR 46 GE 4522, 250 watts, 290,000 candle power) incandescents used about 18 amps each.

I bough a cheap rechargeable flashlight, under $20, at Aldis and it has outperformed all my AAA- D battery flashlights. It has worked well even after being on standby for weeks-months and goes for days on a single charge on the middle bright setting (150 lumens). Ive had it a year and a half and the USB plug is still functionable, but its the least favorite aspect of this light. I live close to the river in a subtropical area of the Ohio Valley so humidity is an issue, particularly with batteries and many of my flashlights succumb to corrosion, even my relatively high end ones. So far so good for the lithium though. Good on your free flashlights and the review.

Highly recommend the Mantus headlamp. Red light, low and high beams, and SOS. Plus, it is rated for use underwater. That is a big plus, if you need to jump in and free your prop. Great customer service. They sent me a replacement headband, after wearing mine out (lots of boat projects) and they sent it free of charge. Can't beat it. USB charge that lasts about 4 hours on low beam. I don't leave the cabin, in the dark, without it.

Great video , great info. I have to mention for a headlamp, BioLite creates a fantastic USB chargeable LED headlamp that was so good that I bought the five-pack as gifts for the rest of my family. I got tired of them "borrowing" mine. Very streamlined and rugged. It keeps the weight off of your forehead. Although they are a bit pricey, I think it's well worth it to have a good dive light. I prefer the models designed for freediving. They tend to work well one-handed. I have one I particularly like that came from a recommendation of a mentor teaching me freediving and spearfishing. It may be out of production now as I couldn't find info online to share.

Just discovered headlamps... I had seen them before but thought the light always moving around would be troublesome... of course to the person wearing them, that is not so the light is always pointing where you look. The ones I got were cheap AA run deals but I may look for a rechargeable next. LEDs have come a long way. I remember designing and building LED flashlights with my son when he was young, red because that was the easy colour to find in good brightness at the time... 25 years ago.

That was a good one, Clark. Any torch that I am going to spend money on has to be USB rechargeable. The two lights I use are my Ryobi 18V stand light which I use for any table work as well as lighting the center part of the boat every night. The other one I use for its performance in every way is a brand call GearWrench. I’ve bought a dozen of those and use them everywhere. I do a lot of machining and the USB rechargeable GearWrench light stick to metal surfaces in a number of ways, angles, has a variety of lighting modes, runs for hours, is compact, and is just my standard light. It has two problems. One is that it is red on one side and black on the other. I can always find it when the red side is up, but no the other way. The other problem is that it is not water proof, which I discovered with one of mine on the boat when it fell in the bilge while I was cleaning the bilge. It’s still in pieces. So I like the look of the QLights and will buy a few and give them a go. I particularly like the charge connection, and if they are in fact waterproof they will become my new preferred light. What I would really also like to know is what you are using for your deck lights. Mine doesn’t work and I don’t want to try 5 alternatives before I find a good one. What did you put up?

Good Video. Here is a comment on "Pure Spotlights" I usually keep and use one BIG Spotlight that I can use on deck if I have to signal a ship far away at sea, as you suggested one might need once in a while. I have gone through many BIG spotlights over the years and I have a pile of them sitting sadly in the corner of my garage like the "Misfit toys" from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, just waiting for someone to use them again..... But the BIG spotlight I use now seems like it will be sticking around for a while. And it is BRIGHT !! -- CORNEA BURNING Bright ! Its the Ryobi ONE+ 18V Hybrid LED Spotlight. ( Model # P717 ) . When I turn this on outside at night I swear I can light up something a mile away and the great thing about it , it runs on the very popular recharging 18V Ryobi batteries and interchangeable with so many other things I have on board like my cordless drill and hand vacuum cleaner, etc. Its big, but it stands on its own and if you ever need "BIG LIGHT" this is it.

The little flashlight that you bought a bunch of at hardware stores is pretty good, but I think the design could be better; the positive is always on the case.. Another great video. I was looking at drinking water filtering and storing solutions and I'm struggling to find simple solutions. Everyone seems to love the burkey carbon filters but I'm wondering about reverse osmosis. The lifestraw seems like a simple affordable solution but it doesn't seem to be advertised as reverse osmosis and doesn't remove salt not that I'm trying to desalt ocean water just saying. I'm not sure if I can trust all the unknown filter companies with 3 canister solutions on amazon compared to popular companies like lifestraw and burkey. Anyways, I know you buy water now but I figure with your experience that maybe you could make a great video on the subject and maybe not just for boating but for any off grid situation.

Good idea. I suggest you don't buy anything that's marked to you in the filter world. This is mature tech. Industrial filter housings can be bought for like $30us last I looked (is been a while because they last forever). And you can get any filter cartridge you want. If you need sediment go that way. If you want to remove chemistry and taste - carbon. If you want both just use two housings in series.

@@EmilyAndClark That looks very affordable but I kind of like the metal bracket that connects all three and makes it easy to mount. And the price is not that much higher like I see some 5 stage with brackets and bladder tank for $112 with filters included. Or just a 3 stage with bracket with 3 Standard Filter housings 3/4 inch NPT for $98 with filters. I guess I could just use metal strapping then removing them is a pain. Anyways, are you saying avoid all metal bracket ones and just use cheap canisters and filters? Also reading the description it comes with sediment, activated carbon and block carbon filters. It says they prevent clogging of RO membrane but I don't see a RO membrane included. I guess I buy that separate. Anyways, thank you reply! I feel pointed in the right direction but still so many questions.
