Old Ivan ,a retired tugboat operator [Panama canal]that had lived on his sailboat most of his life told me that a sailboat needs a plow type anchor with lots of chain on account of its motion in a storm being different from other type boats.The same man used to tell me that the enemy of a sailboat was not the open sea in a storm but land.Great video !!!Thank you!!

Clark, I wanted to point out that stainless steel is a big family. On boats, 316 or 316L is mostly used, which is prone to crevice corrosion in seawater. Duplex (DSS) or superduplex (SDSS) are different materials. The corrosion rate of 316L stainless steel is two orders of magnitude greater than that of 2205 DSS and 2507 SDSS in natural seawater. Some manufacturers understand this, but most do not, similar to how some use brass instead of bronze.

Anchors are always a touchy subject in the sailing world! Nice job on covering it. I of course have my own ideas, some thru experience, some from reading. Have used cqr, bruce and danforth. Like them all, but my next boat would have a manson supreme or Rocna over sized as my primary anchor. Backup would be a cqr or bruce again over sized. Bruce is a great anchor, used successfully by many over the years.Steve Dashew swears by it. All his boats had one, a big one.But it wouldn't be my first choice. A fortress and a paul Luke for storm conditions in the bilge. The fortress on the stern. All chain rode, not HT, only bbb on the primary anchor. Chain should be heavy.Its the heavy chain and catenary that holds you. No snubber or swivel. Snubbers while good for moderate conditions, can cause your boat to move to much with eh elasticity. And this can cause most boats to head off and go beam to. That can cause your anchor to drag. Have enough rode so that you can cut your chain and anchor loose from the deck. Windless is very important as is a chain stopper. Don't forget a series drogue sea anchor! Also, very important, you could have the best setup but the skill required is acquired over time. Proper scope is important. If possible dive the anchor to make SURE its good. AS you said, a good anchor system is piece of mind, better than insurance. Only a fool would make his own anchor imo. Great video.

Thanks Clark, I had wished for some anchor knowledge when I started out. I actually had an anchor bend and I woke up a mile from where I anchored. I'm a coastal cruiser with an over sized Rocna, 100' of chain and 200' of nylon rode. I use a snubber for its stretching but also to reduce the scope required. Those of us who cruise a lot know that anchoring is THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL. You want to have a good sleep and know you'll wake up in the same place you were when you went to bed. It's ironic that you used Lake Ontario as your fresh water, no tide example. That's where I took my lessons to learn how to sale. I've got my intermediate sailing certification and I didn't do one course on anchoring. Cheers and we'll see you soon in GT.

@@EmilyAndClark Ok here’s another question from the newbie. Let’s say I just bought a Bluewater 35’ with a displacement of about 5 tonne and it’s got an electric which, now how do I know what size chain and anchor I need for that size boat and what if that chain won’t fit the gypsie. Can I change out the gypsie or do I need to buy the correct size winch? And how often do those winches need maintenance and what needs to be performed. I’m sorry Clark I just have so many questions 😂😂 but this is a very important subject and I want to get it right mate. Oh yeah good luck buying a non Chinese chain in Australia, nearly everything here is...Made in China 😂
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 2 жыл бұрын
Italian chain can be good. Go where the fishermen go and look for chain there. There are tables all over that show boat size vs chain size. West marine web page for one. Gypsies can be changed. A boat with a windlass probably has the right sized gypsie already Chain can be about one size stronger if it's high test. Different metal. If you really have loads of questions and can afford it we have a tier on Patreon called "dream believers" where we can talk on the phone. Several new boat owners use it to get help with system design.

Very interesting and informative video! I have a design I am working on for an anchor it’s still in my cad and I’m constantly making adjustments. But there are a lot of similarities to your regular sailboat anchor. For small vessels first to see how hardy it is. Thank you for the video! Also I like the regular 3 braid line for splicing simplicity. I worked on tugs for 13 years and actually made fenders from our old 3 braid mooring lines. Those where fun times.

Polypropylene line will snap long before nylon. If your boat is bigger than 20ft you should use nylon its 3x stronger than poly and then stretch in rough weather won't yank your anchor off the bottom or rip your deck cleats off unlike polypropylene.

after sitting a night at anchor 2 nights ago in 25kts winds with my danforth stressing out because i was 3ft away from the rocky shoreline - i finally purchased a 35lb CQR plow anchor again for my 33ft ranger sailboat. i cannot thank you enough for this video Clark as it was inspiring to me and i now have piece of mind leaving my boat to go onshore in any conditions in the bay pretty much. ...(for less than $300 investment too) i also decided it was time for me to get enough chain for EACH anchor - which i learned a good rule of thumb is about 1.5 times the length of your vessel. i believe i will still only primarily use the danforth with the 50ft of chain, but i know i always have that GREAT second option to throw that heavy CQR out in heavy weather just in case. my boating experience just became about 1000 times more enjoyable and i will have them any where i choose to roam now. Been coastal cruising for 30 plus years around Florida as a single hand sailor living aboard at anchor. I so agree with most everything I heard you say much more politely than I would. I now use Mantus M1 as my primary and the M2 as my secondary anchor and have never experienced anything like them or even coming close to their capacity. I sail a 1983 Hunter 31 hull #58 much upgraded loaded for cruising weighing in at 10,000 pounds so my anchors are 35 pound galvanized Mantus M1 & 2. I almost always set out 10 to 1 anchor rode so surprise storms aren't trouble. I have gone back to chain & twisted nylon rode instead of all chain as I prefer its action in heavy weather. I run 33 feet of 5/16ths BBB chain per anchor with 200 feet of 5/8ths line available. I keep a couple fortresses for kedgeing and spider webbing in a hurricane hole. Enough line on board is important when weathering a big blow.

Thanks for some good advice. I have a original cqr and I'm trying to learn to love it,,, seems to work fine... haven't really tried anything else either. We are unfortunately troubled with very deep waters in Norway and often a hard mudd bottom, so I've learnt that patience is a skill required to anchor successfully,,,, i mean dig it in slowly and lett it sett over a bit of time before putting too much pull on it in our bottom conditions. Good day Jarle, Yep, that's how you have to use CQRs. They take a bit of seamanship. Thought I would respond to tell you we no longer carry that anchor. We have replaced it with a slightly larger Mantus. We are much happier. Just drop it and it sets.

@@braithmiller I still anchor with peace of mind. I usually anchor in the same spot for a day or two before moving on. I am so confident that I guess I wold replace it with a second hand CQR if i shuld loose this one.... mainly due to the price, if i shuld loose my anchor a replacement wont brake the bank. If the weather is to bad I hide in a marina or somewhere shelterd. Plenty of good hiding places in the Norwegian fjords. Best regards from Jarle Ps: I recommend everyone to buy a better anchor, buy for my use I find the CQR to be sufficient.

Hello Clark, thanks for the videos! They're always chock full of really useful information. I recently purchased a sailboat that requires a slip and I live on the Gulf Coast, so I am trying to plan ahead for hurricane season. The boat is a Beneteau Idylle 11.5 (37") and it weighs about 12,000lbs with everything on board. I currently have a 22lb Rocna Spade anchor and maybe 60 to 70 foot of chain. I intend on purchasing much more chain and a much sturdier anchor to ride the storms out in one of many hurricane holes in my area. Can I double up and have two lengths of chain running to the anchor from the rode? Or is daisy chaining a smaller anchor somewhere along the chain a viable option? What anchor type and weight would you suggest I get as my hurricane anchor? Predominantly sand bottoms, but some areas of mud as well. Thanks so much for the tips in the videos! I learn multiple things every one I watch!

This big difference between CQR etc and modern new generation of anchors is holding power per weight of anchor. CQR is about 8 x weight. NG anchors 35-45 times weight. In other words 4-5 times the holding power per lbs (or kg) of anchor.

I sail an Ericson 28+ in the PNW and just upgraded to a 10kg Rocna - the boat came with a Bruce originally (in which I added a kellet, as I found I couldn't sleep with the Bruce, just that trust thing I suppose, I'm still quite new to anchoring), as well as small CQR and fortress backups. Hoping to get to test out the Rocna plenty in the coming months!

Thanks Clark. Great explanation of the various Anchor types. What would you recommend for a 31ft Sailing Yacht which I will live on full time on the Brisbane River in Queensland Australia. This is a Blue Water capable Yacht (Peterson). Would a new medium sized Rocna be the way to go?
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 5 жыл бұрын
All the new generation anchors are great. We just signed a deal with Mantus. Rocna also made us an endorsement offer but we liked the Mantus slightly better. I think the Mason is a fine choice as well. These anchors work well in most bottoms I understand (I'll know more with first hand experience). But if you aren't traveling far a specialized anchor might be best. See what other sailors are using locally.

This is the 2nd time I watched this video. The first time was after I bought my own boat, and I wanted to know if the CQR that came with it was good enough. Now, few years later, I've sailed many thousands of miles, and this year in the Mediterranean the anchor dragged every other time, and I often needed to try setting it multiple times until it set. This was mainly in sandy bottom or with growth in Italy, Spain, and Greece. As a "living on boat" world sailor told me some weeks ago, who had had a chat with Peter Smith in NZ: "plow anchors do one thing well, they plow the seabed". 😂. He was not wrong. Maybe my anchor was a knockoff. Maybe it was too light (25kg/55lb about, for 44ft 10T yacht). But after the anchor slipped heavily in a harbor, during my temporary absence, and damaged another boat, I decided to immediately buy a Rocna (or Mantus, but they didn't have it on stock), took the ferry to Athens the same day, and installed the Rocna (25kg). Ever since, it just always set immediately. I'm sure you'll disagree on the part of CQR. I've relied on it on Dutch, British, and German waters just fine. But mud and weed, or sand and weed, it failed again and again, even with ample chain. Anyway, I love all your videos, always very informative, especially the ones on electronics. Happy sailing!

@EmilyAndClark 10 ай бұрын
Yep the new ones are better. As I said in the video the CQR was likely to be replaced on Temptress. (From the day I said it, that anchor started dragging a lot, it was like it heard me) Well we now have a Mantus.
@Misteribel
@Misteribel 10 ай бұрын
@EmilyAndClark it's not fair that the anchor listened in! Maybe if I had one or two sizes bigger, I wouldn't have had the issues I mentioned, but it becomes tough to handle. Mantus is nice, I'd be curious about your experiences, I'm considering buying it either as a backup or storm anchor.

We were offered all the major new anchors and I chose the Mantus over the others for a few reasons. Tip pressure when lying on a flat surface. Comes apart. It's not fast as an anchor but as plates then formed.. I think it's more likely the little anchor casting company is going to have a bad batch than the big foundry that makes bridge parts. The cqr required seamanship to get it to dig on. The Mantus- if it's down it works!

Long time coastal cruiser here. Used to use CQR in the old days many years ago and it was good in those days, but sometimes hard to set, and trouble in weeds. Then went to Bruce which is a little better in my areas. Then Spade, very good, then Rocna very good also but occasionally some problem setting. Now a Mantus for 2 years, which is the best, sets instantly with short scope, never dragged and easily resets itself when in tidal current. We carry a large fortress, but have never needed it. We anchor mostly on chain with a 1/2” 3 strand snubber. Mantus sells the “devils claw”. This is info from 4 different boats.

Excellent information Clark. Anchors are your insurance policy to keep your boat from dragging. For a dinghy, one anchor is enough, but on a larger boat I'd say you need at least four anchors; your regular anchor; a replacement for the regular one, if you ever loose it, or have to drop it. Then how do you re-anchor if you haven't got a spare? Next, I want to set a second anchor if the wind pipes up. I also want a stern anchor, as an emergency brake; and a lightweight "Lunch Hook, and then I want a large heavy CQR in the forepeak with lots of chain and 300 feet of rode as a storm anchor. Clark, give your viewers a lecture on how to buoy your anchor so that it can be retrieved if it gets stuck; or if you have to suddenly drop it because a power boat has wrapped your rode around his propeller and pulled the anchor out of the bottom. Now what?
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 3 жыл бұрын
One should not bouy their anchor. Causes more problems. Gets caught in propellers. One basically never looses or gets their anchor cought. And if it happens you can just dive down through the beautiful water. It's the kind of thing that looks good in books but not in practice.

All chain rode eliminates other boats getting props in yours. Anchor marker floats I have seen get in props so some still use them taugt line at low tide less chance of fouling.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I realized after I was about halfway through editing that I should have done color correction on the raw videos first. Also, half was shot around noon with high sun, and the other half just an hour before sunset. And of course the boat rotates constantly with the wind, changing the angle of the sun! We are learning. Any videos or channels you recommend that can help me learn more about color adjustment in Adobe Premiere Pro? Thanks for encouraging us to up our game with production -Emily

@@EmilyAndClark I use Sony Vegas but I'm sure Adobe is similar. What I do is put footage from each camera on it's own video channel on the time line. I would also do any audio/video syncing at this time. Then I do color correction on the entire channel for each camera (as opposed to color correcting each clip of video). Also apply some sharpening, levels etc. Then edit the footage. What's great is that if you need to change the color again later it's simple. You can also still do further corrections on a clip by clip basis. Hopefully that makes sense. But the main idea is to have separate video and audio channels for each recording device.

Yep. Thanks Kevin. That was one of our earlier videos. We have gotten a bit better I hope. What we really want now, and will get as soon as we sail back to the US is a gray card. That is going to make color correction much less subjective.

after watching MANY reviews, it seems that the MANTUS or ROCNA anchors are the best new design technology. have you used either of these?? also i heard from many people that a good rule of thumb for chain length is 1.5 times the length of your vessel. i hope this helps and i will be buying BOTH a mantus/rocna anchor AND 50ft of chain for my 33ft sailboat this month. i absolutely want a ZERO QUESTION situation for myself.

I like both of those anchors and the spade as well. It looks like Mantus may be giving us an anchor. It looks like a great choice, I'll be happy to use it of the offer comes through. I think chain length is more a function of the deepth you anchor in and bottom type than your boat length. But for a mixed chain rope system 50 feet of chain seems like plenty.

I think your video covered the sound basics, In my opinion carry the biggest quality anchor you can manage, I use a 25kg Delta on a 43ft 12 ton ketch, I have a spare 20 kg Plough, a 50kg Danforth and a 15kg fishermans for weed. I have 70m of 10mm Quality chain, its enough but I want more, anchoring in places like png where it drops to 600m from the beach over a 100m distance is a challenge. I was surprised I didnt hear you cover anchor buddies, I use a 20kg peice of axle steel that I lower down my chain using a rope and shackle it keeps the chain on the bottom and the chain provides most of the hold power to the anchor through friction. I tend to pivot around the anchor buddy cost nothing to make just scrap steel and improves the holding in any ground. I have ridden out 70knot storms in weed over sand in a location where dragging was not an option. if you dont have try it, and you will.

Kellets, ok I got the idea from an old fisherman from Tasmania who used an old British system called something else, mine is just 2 inch axle steel 2 feet long I have never dragged when using it to support the anchor, his other sage advice was use a big anchor and all your chain, as it doesn't work sitting in the locker, I believe this is why many people drag, too little anchor chain out this is where the anchor buddy comes in handy in busy areas where you dont have swing room and your only using a portion of your chain the weight keeps the chain on the seabed, to many boaters use too little chain for safe anchoring and they anchor on top of each other like lemmings, I prefer to move away from the crowd for my own safety, like your channel you have some good advice for new and not so new.

I use one. It all comes down to how long you are going to be anchored for and what depth of water. It seems to make no real difference if you anchor deep enough that there are only a few turns in your chain and the anchor comes off the bottom before it binds. If you get one get a GOOD one mantus makes a good stainless one. Otherwise go with galvanized.

I have not had good luck with the CQR. They PLOW. If you want to plant rows of seeds on the bottom they are good for that. I the clear waters of the Caribbean I would put it down, give it plenty of scope, let it settle in some. Then have my wife gently back down. Oops, plowing, still plowing. Dive down and cram it into the bottom as best I can. Shove shove, there finally. As long a you don’t load it up too much Not enough tip weight and that big heave knuckle. I found the Delta a far better anchor. More fluke area, a lot moire tip weight. Not the perfect anchor but big improvement. Then the more modern anchors came out. Rockna, good bang for the buck. Replaced the Delta in that department. Manta, ultimate, mantua, Spade. All good. My choice is the Spade. Really holds comes up and loads right onto the roller without fuss. Love it. With my 44’ 33,000# sailboat, I used a Delta 55 with good results. Now use a Spade 44. And the Spade holds much better even though 11# lighter. Just my thought with 50 yrs of cruising in 5 different cruising boats. PS. Love you battery/electrical vids.

Hi Clark. Regarding three strand rode, I can't understand why you would advise against splicing near the middle of a line. A well done splice should maintain 100% of the breaking strength. Will you elaborate on your rationale? I can see where it could be a retrieval issue with a combination gypsy. But with a capstan, shouldn't be an issue. Also, you would be remiss not to, at least, mention Steve on S/V Panope in this discussion.

Someone once said "boats are slow, planes are fast".(me actually after flying back from a delivery to Hawaii) To me it doesn't matter where I am in the slow category as long as I can travel safely and comfortably. Heavy boats can carry things that allow you to be both. And some heavy boats are reasonably fast.
