I have 2 lithium batteries connected to a Renogy MPPT solar charger and keep having over charging conditions up to 16v. What causes this?
@Clarks-Adventure13 сағат бұрын
If you want to treat your li correctly get a BankManager. There is no other way to safely charge LiFePO4 in an active system You can't safely charge to any voltage but you obviously have your charge controllers set up wrong. Hint: never equalize li

So my questions are.. how can you coulomb count with that thing if you don't have a shunt that is capable and has terminals for the battery to connect to so that all the current coming in and out of the battery can flow, some lifepo4 batteries can dump 3C out of themselves easily, none of the screw terminals on that thing would stand up to that never mind accept cable sizes to match the current passing through it. Next, to manage cell voltages and balance cells, you need to be able to measure the voltage of each cell individually, that means breaking into the case of that battery you had beside you to attach the wires, which would instantly void any warranty. To balance a battery you need to ensure that you are not charging it at a higher current than your balancing method can overcome ( either by wasting charge as heat or moving charge between cells with capacitors) a 2 amp balancer cant overcome a 3 amp charge current, you'll get cells overcharging, the only way to top balance a lifepo4 battery is with constant voltage charging and low current at the end of the charge cycle to allow the balancer time to do it's thing.
@Clarks-Adventure18 сағат бұрын
1. Two of those wires go to a hall effect current sensor that does the work of a shunt but with no voltage drop 2. The bankmanager isn't a BMS. It requires a BMS (which batteries already have) to operate properly. 3. That's between you and your BMS. You should only have to top balance now and again So balance new batteries (I have a video on that). And check them maybe once a year or so. Learn for your battery how often this is required.

Hi Clark. I have been giving increasing amounts of thought to the problems experienced with bad weather Conditions, since the 1979 Fastnet Race Tragedy, and had reached the conclusion that most problems originate with too tall air draft Masts, and much too long Booms resulting in far too large Main Sails, resulting in too high up leverage moments difficulty in handling and very real problems with reefing if not reefing early enough, so my next Sailboat is planned to be based around the Concept of having an increased diameter Mast than is normal, with in Mast Furling, say with a Mast height of 40 feet AWL, and with a Short Boom from the Mast that reaches to the front of a Hard Dodger ( to help prevent water entering the Companionway), the Boom end finishing above a strong Mainsheet Track in front of the Dodger. The forces on preventers being significantly reduced, but no danger to Cockpit occupants, as the Boom doesn’t reach the aft cockpit anyway. The short Boom and larger diameter Mast means plenty of room inside the Mast to have a super strong Main Sail of Battenless Triradial Construction to fit about a nine foot long Boom. Final details to be worked out once I get accurate dimensions. I’m thinking the Sail to have two or three reinforced reefing points built from such strong materials that the final Reef will leave Staysail strength fabric of variable adjustment exposed right where we need that Staysail most - right next to the Mast. Combined with only furling headsails that can be locked by wrapping sheets around them, the Maisail, due to not having any Battens should be really reliable but likely will need a powerful electric winch to guarantee ease of handling, and no chafing wear and tear on the Saikcloth to affect furling reliability. This may shock you Clark, but it took literally years to find a Sailmaker who said anything different to - sorry but we only do Main Sails with Battens. Finally I got a - yes we do them- from Precision Sails with a follow up note at the bottom of the email - you may be interested to hear, that we found the Triradial Construction recovers most of the power lost from not having Battens. Today, years later, most Sailmakers now do Battenless Main Sails with Triradial Construction. In addition of course stronger rigging is needed to fit the Concept with. Recently I did get confirmation that the Concept does indeed stand a good chance of working, though several attempts are likely going to be needed to get the finer details of the Sail construction just right. Tim of Practical Sailor Channel put up a video on Sailboat Drines, which included a mention of a Drone that had been deliberately Sailed into and out of a Category 4 Hurricane taking measurements . Clark, Inthink it is so important to get all of the needed data and design tweaking for this concept, that I am going to try my best to get it done, which will mean me having to get a boat that is actually smaller than I need due to the problems sourcing vital elements of it, which rules out testing many other things sadly, and there is one option with all the basics beeded, the Island Packet 349, which has a standard Mast of 54 feet AWL, does have a hard Dodger available as an option, displacement is almost double that of my super strong Endeavour 32, and with a short Boom may be able to fully furl a super strong Main Sails. My only gripe is whether I can replace the Single wheel in the Cockpit, because my Endeavour had one, and it was such a pain in the ass, I swore I would never have So Hopefully I can have it with a Tiller. I’m sure Darrell of IPY will do his best to accommodate my needs for the Concept testing platform. Bottom line though after ending up several times in really terrible conditions, is Computer Model based weather forecasting just isn’t reliable enough to depend on, and we need to be prepared to cope with very worst conditions, even though us Cruisers and Voyagers never ever seek them out. Me? I still consider the Beaufort Scale Force 6 winds to be Yacht Gales, and react accordingly, and you will never see me deliberately heading out into deteriorating Conditions, I’m heading for Sheltered Bays my shallow Draft Sailboat can securely anchor in frankly instead. Keep on making great recovery progress Clark. Very Best Wishes. Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍⛵️🇬🇧🏴

I enjoy the stories. They are pertinent because engineers who have tested their systems and can relate those systems' capabilities combine both Amazon reviews like usefulness with DIY capability, so two-in-one. Right now I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to do multiple things with comms. I'm going to try to combine AIS, GPS, and VHF in one overall system (probably will have a separate GPS receiver, but I'll NMEA it to display / try to get a good overall picture, as open source as possible). I've been searching for AIS transponders and they're super expensive. Doesn't make sense to me because it's just a transceiver on a specific channel transmitting a specific protocol / set of info. Spending another $500-800 every time I want to add a single thing like that makes no sense to me whatsoever. Just came across the MAIANA open source transponder project...

If you can live with AIS receive only the dAISy is inexpensive

I'm really sorry to hear that. I remember after my second divorce I had been taking an electrical cert course and was almost done. I just couldn't do it anymore as I couldn't focus or really gather my thoughts, even though I'd been getting straight As. Had to stop. Today, I'm over it, doing well by myself. Stuff like that takes time. What carries you are your passions mostly, but giving yourself time is also necessary. I wouldn't worry at all about the channel name. "Clark's Adventure" is perfectly fine. The search doesn't seem to care about that either. People are usually pretty good at recognizing you from your face and voice, they'll get it.

Clark. I just saw something about Hertz rental cars selling Tesla electric cars for cheap. I am going to guess these have 2170 cells. 13 of these would generate 48 volts and 4.8 amps. Would such a set up make for a good electric outboard motor? If so, you might be able to build 7 or so such battery banks with each Tesla car. Now how cheap are these Teslas they are selling?

What a nice and clear story. Until you started on 24:00 about your product. Furthermore, you claimed that you should NEVER charge to a certain voltage. However, you do not mention how it should be done. I charge Pylon with the available sun to 51.8V (15 cells) without any problems.

@stoomheier7 күн бұрын
@@Clarks-Adventure Do you have the correct charging sequence for a 15-cell LiFePo4 battery? I want to charge to max. 51.8V. At a higher voltage, the Pylontech battery 2000 gets hot in just a few minutes even at 0.02A charging current. I even got another unit for that under warranty. Not charging to 100% (52,5-53.5V) prevents that nasty temperature increase.
